Yes—an old Raspberry Pi can host a Wi-Fi hotspot and, with an upstream internet connection, share that connection with wireless devices. It is a useful networking project, not a proven replacement for an expensive router: the available benchmark measures a Raspberry Pi as a Wi-Fi client, not as an access point competing with retail routers.
What a Raspberry Pi can—and cannot—do for Wi-Fi
Raspberry Pi’s networking documentation describes setting up the board as a wireless access point. In practical terms, nearby devices can join a network broadcast by the Pi. Give the Pi an internet connection through Ethernet or a second wireless module, and it can route internet access to those hotspot clients. Raspberry Pi’s access-point guide documents this setup.
The standard routed hotspot creates a separate private network for its wireless clients. They do not automatically become peers of devices on the wired network; the Pi sits between the networks. That is different from a transparent bridge, so a hotspot may not suit a goal such as making every device appear on the same home LAN.
This can be useful for a small, specific job—such as creating a separate wireless network or learning how routing works. It does not establish that the Pi improves the home router’s existing Wi-Fi coverage or speed. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Pi 4 benchmark article describes the board connecting as a client to an 802.11ac router. That is not a test of a Pi broadcasting Wi-Fi against dedicated routers, and it does not support a claim that a Pi beats them.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the connection layout before setting it up
| Layout | What connects upstream | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Routed hotspot with Ethernet | The Pi connects to the router or internet through Ethernet and broadcasts Wi-Fi. | It avoids needing a second Wi-Fi interface for the upstream link. Hotspot clients are on a separate private network by default. |
| Wi-Fi uplink plus Wi-Fi hotspot | One Wi-Fi interface connects to an existing network; another broadcasts the Pi’s hotspot. | Raspberry Pi’s hotel-hotspot tutorial recommends two Wi-Fi devices for this arrangement. At least one must support AP mode. |
| Repeater-style project | Configuration and hardware determine how the Pi connects to the existing router and serves clients. | RaspAP’s repeater documentation describes a route using a default 2.4 GHz access point and a USB Wi-Fi dongle for the router connection. Compatibility and topology depend on the setup. |
If the goal is simply to provide Wi-Fi where Ethernet is available, the Ethernet-uplink layout is the straightforward starting point. If the Pi must receive and rebroadcast Wi-Fi, check the exact adapter and software support rather than assuming one radio can reliably do both jobs.
Check the exact Pi model and operating system
“Old Raspberry Pi” does not identify its wireless capabilities. Raspberry Pi’s model information notes that the Pi 3B and Zero W have 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi, while the Pi 1B, 1B+ and 2B lack built-in Wi-Fi. The Pi 4 Model B specifications list dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz 802.11ac wireless and Gigabit Ethernet. A USB adapter may be needed depending on the board and chosen connection layout.

- Identify the board model before planning for 5 GHz Wi-Fi or built-in Ethernet.
- For a Wi-Fi uplink and hotspot, verify that the hardware and driver support the required simultaneous interfaces and access-point mode.
- For a USB Wi-Fi adapter, confirm Linux driver support and AP-mode capability for the specific chipset, Raspberry Pi OS release and kernel you will use. Raspberry Pi’s tutorial mentions a 2.4 GHz adapter based on MediaTek MT7601U as an example; that is not a guarantee of current availability or compatibility.
- Use power and storage appropriate to the exact Pi. For example, Raspberry Pi specifies a minimum 5V/3A input and microSD storage for Pi 4; requirements vary by model. These are setup requirements, not Wi-Fi upgrades.
Set up a hotspot on current Raspberry Pi OS
Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later use NetworkManager by default, so older tutorials that assume different networking tools may not match current menus or commands. On dual-band devices, set a WLAN country before enabling wireless networking. Raspberry Pi’s wireless access-point documentation provides the current NetworkManager command sequence and configuration details.
- Install and boot Raspberry Pi OS, then identify the board’s Wi-Fi and Ethernet interfaces. Connect Ethernet if it will be the hotspot’s internet uplink.
- Set the WLAN country for the device before enabling wireless networking, particularly on a dual-band model.
- Follow Raspberry Pi’s current access-point guide to create the hotspot with NetworkManager. Its documented command begins
nmcli device wifi hotspot; use the guide’s full syntax and options for the desired network name, password and interface rather than guessing those values. - Connect a phone or computer to the new network and check that it receives an address and can reach the internet when the Pi has a working upstream connection.
The hotspot command alone does not provide internet service: the Pi still needs a working upstream link. For a Wi-Fi-only upstream connection, follow the two-device approach in the Raspberry Pi hotel-hotspot tutorial and confirm AP-mode support before buying or configuring an adapter.

What would prove that it is better than a router?
The available evidence does not establish that a Raspberry Pi access point outperforms any expensive router. A fair comparison would need the same clients, location, distance, Wi-Fi band and generation, and equivalent test conditions. It would also need to compare throughput, latency, simultaneous-client capacity, coverage, stability, routing features and total setup cost. The Pi’s published hardware specifications and client-mode benchmark do not answer those questions for hotspot use.
So treat the project as a way to repurpose hardware for a defined networking task—not as a verified speed or coverage upgrade. A Wi-Fi adapter, newer Pi, power supply or microSD card should not be assumed to improve wireless performance by itself.
