Yes—an old laptop can run a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube stream if it can encode your exact video at real time or faster, while staying powered and connected. Age alone cannot answer that: test the laptop with the codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and audio you intend to use. A VPS moves the work off your home computer, but it still needs suitable capacity, configuration, and monitoring.
What decides whether the laptop will work?
There are two separate tests: can the laptop keep up with the video, and can the whole setup stay online? Google’s live-encoding guidance says encoding must run at least at 1× real time. If it falls below that, the encoder cannot keep up with the live input, and viewers may see buffering or transmission breaks. A processor’s age or model name is not a substitute for measuring the actual workload. Google’s live-encoding guidance
- Encoding: FFmpeg’s reported speed should remain at or above 1× during a sustained test using the intended source and settings.
- Network: The home upload connection must reliably sustain the stream’s bitrate. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee about your internet plan.
- Power and cooling: The laptop, charger, cooling system, router, and local power all have to keep working. Sleep settings, heat, and throttling can interrupt a stream even if encoding initially passes.
- Recovery: Plan how the process will restart and how you will learn that the stream has stopped. FFmpeg does not by itself provide an always-on hosting service.
For a static video loop, encoding demand depends on how the loop is produced and whether FFmpeg must encode it in real time. Filters, overlays, audio processing, codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether hardware encoding is supported by both the laptop and its FFmpeg build all matter.

A VPS is not automatically cheaper, more reliable, or powerful enough for every stream. Compare the specific provider’s CPU or hardware-encoding capability, transfer limits, location, recovery access, terms, and recurring cost against the laptop you already have.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current Help guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not measured upload speeds or a promise that your connection can sustain them. Start conservatively, then verify both FFmpeg performance and YouTube’s reported stream health. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Preflight the laptop before relying on it
- Enable live streaming and get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio, confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, then obtain the current server URL and stream key through the encoder setup flow. Enter these in your encoder and keep the key secret; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Pick a conservative output. Choose a supported resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance as a starting point. Leave upload headroom and test the actual connection; do not treat the recommended encoder bitrate as a guarantee from your ISP.
- Run the real workload. Use the intended loop or source material, including its audio, motion, overlays, and filters. Confirm FFmpeg reports an encoding speed of at least 1× throughout the run, not merely at startup. Hardware encoding is an option only if the device and FFmpeg build support it.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Watch stream health and any warnings while the test is running. Confirm the selected bitrate and connection remain stable.
- Leave it running under supervision long enough to expose problems. Look for heat-related throttling, sleep or lid settings, network drops, and process failures. A long trial is prudent, but no short test proves 24/7 reliability, and the official guidance does not prescribe a specific test duration.
- Set up recovery and monitoring. Keep useful logs, arrange process restart supervision and alerts, and make sure you can regain access if the machine or connection fails. These are operational measures you must configure, not guarantees supplied by FFmpeg or YouTube.

24/7 does not mean an unlimited YouTube archive
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that condition, so do not rely on YouTube automatically saving one complete archive of a nonstop stream.
