Can an Old DSLR Still Take Good Photos? Revisiting the Canon EOS 1000D

Yes—an old DSLR can still make enjoyable, worthwhile photographs. Amy Davies’s September 29, 2026 account of returning to her first DSLR, the Canon EOS 1000D, is a personal retrospective rather than a controlled comparison: she found its physical controls and viewfinder experience rewarding, while its slow Live View, modest autofocus system and dated screen made it feel limited beside modern equipment.

Which DSLR did Amy Davies revisit?

Davies returned to the Canon EOS 1000D, which she says she bought in 2009, a year after its release. In the United States, the same model was called the EOS Digital Rebel XS. Canon’s 2008 specification lists 10.10 megapixels of effective resolution, a 22.2 × 14.8 mm image sensor and a Canon EF mount. It supports EF lenses, including EF-S lenses. For her return, Davies used an 18–55mm kit lens and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. She describes the camera producing detailed images and portraits with shallow depth of field, and notes that some exposures benefited from RAW processing. Those are her observations from using this particular camera and setup, not a claim that it matches a current camera in a formal image-quality test. Davies’s account in Amateur Photographer.

What made the camera enjoyable again?

The appeal was partly tactile and personal. Davies says the physical controls felt familiar and that muscle memory returned after years away from the camera. A DSLR’s viewfinder and dedicated controls offer a different way to shoot from tapping a phone screen; for someone who enjoys that deliberate, hands-on process, an older camera can still be satisfying.

That pleasure is not the same as convenience. A phone is ready to use and processes pictures immediately. The EOS 1000D asks the photographer to work with a separate body and lens, and Davies found its responsiveness and screen frustrating by modern standards. There is no head-to-head test in her article, so the experience does not establish an overall winner between a phone and an old DSLR.

What are the Canon EOS 1000D’s practical limitations?

Davies points to seven autofocus points, a viewfinder showing 95% of the scene, a 2.5-inch rear display that is difficult to see in bright daylight, and slow Live View. These limitations matter most if you depend on the rear screen to compose, need fast focusing or want to check precisely what will appear at the edges of the frame. Her observations describe the EOS 1000D; they should not be treated as a test of every older DSLR.

The camera’s age also matters when buying one: specifications do not tell you whether an individual used body, battery, charger or lens is still in good working order. Canon’s manual estimates about 600 shots at 23°C with no flash, or about 500 when flash is used for half of shots, with a fully charged LP-E5 battery. These are Canon’s CIPA-based figures, not a promise of how many shots an aged battery will deliver. Canon’s EOS 1000D manual.

Does it make sense to buy a used EOS 1000D?

It may suit someone who wants an inexpensive route into DSLR photography and values physical controls more than modern speed or convenience. Davies reported seeing the camera with a kit lens for under £150 in her September 29, 2026 article. That was her time-bound second-hand-market observation, not a current price quote or guarantee of availability. Amateur Photographer.

Assess the whole working setup rather than the body price alone:

  • Check the body’s condition and whether its controls, screen and viewfinder function as expected.
  • Confirm the exact lens included and inspect its physical condition. Canon lists EF and EF-S compatibility, but that does not establish the condition or suitability of a specific used lens.
  • Find out whether an included EF-S 18–55mm lens is the IS or non-IS version; do not assume the listing’s description covers this detail.
  • Include a working LP-E5 battery and compatible LC-E5 or LC-E5E charger in your cost calculation. Canon identifies these as the relevant battery and charger family. Canon’s EOS 1000D bundled-accessory information.

Who is likely to enjoy going back to an old DSLR?

The EOS 1000D’s appeal is clearest for a photographer who wants to learn through dedicated controls, compose through an optical viewfinder and experiment with lenses, and who accepts slower operation and dated convenience. Davies’s return suggests that older equipment need not prevent enjoyable photography, but it is one person’s experience with one model—not evidence that every vintage DSLR will perform alike.
