A screenshot API subscription used for business may qualify; being a sole proprietor does not itself prevent a claim. An unregistered proprietor cannot claim ordinary GST ITC, and eligibility for a particular subscription depends on its supplier, invoice, use and tax treatment.
When can a sole proprietor claim ITC?
Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act frames ITC entitlement around a registered person and business use. It states: “Every registered person shall, subject to such conditions and restrictions as may be prescribed and in the manner specified in section 49, be entitled to take credit of input tax charged on any supply of goods or services or both to him which are used or intended to be used in the course or furtherance of his business”. That means a screenshot API subscription is not automatically claimable just because it helps with work. The proprietor needs GST registration for the relevant business, eligible tax documentation, receipt of the service, business use, and compliance with the applicable supplier reporting, tax-payment and return requirements. The current section 16 time limit shown on the Department of Revenue portal is the thirtieth day of November following the relevant financial year or the date of filing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier; check the live law for subsequent changes and how the rule applies to the claim. - Confirm registration. The proprietor must be a registered person eligible to claim ITC. Business use alone does not give an unregistered person a right to ordinary ITC.
- Check the supplier and invoice. Identify the supplier’s legal entity and make sure the tax document contains the prescribed details and the recipient information, including the correct GSTIN where applicable. Rule 36 of the CGST Rules sets out the documentary basis for credit and required particulars. CGST Rules, Rule 36
- Check GST records and filing conditions. Confirm the invoice details are furnished and communicated as required and review the relevant inward-supply records. A card receipt, payment confirmation or subscription email by itself does not establish ITC eligibility.
- Establish business use. Keep a reasonable record that the subscription is used or intended for use in the course or furtherance of the registered business.
- Meet the remaining statutory conditions. Receipt of the service, supplier tax treatment and payment, return filing and the time limit all matter. Verify the current requirements before entering a credit in a return.
What changes if the screenshot API supplier is overseas?
First identify the legal supplier named in the contract or invoice and determine the place of supply and applicable classification. An overseas subscription can involve import-of-service and online information and database access or retrieval (OIDAR) rules. Depending on the facts, a registered Indian recipient may have to pay IGST under reverse charge. CBIC’s FAQ says a registered recipient taking online database access services from abroad pays applicable IGST under reverse charge; it also says an unregistered recipient may instead fall under supplier-side OIDAR collection. Whether a particular screenshot API falls into a given category depends on its service and contracting facts. CBIC GST FAQs IGST Act

If reverse charge applies, the tax payment and related documents must be handled correctly. CBIC states that ITC of tax paid under reverse charge remains subject to Chapter V of the CGST Act and Rules; reverse-charge payment does not make the credit automatic. CBIC GST FAQs
How business, personal and exempt use affect the credit
Credit is limited by the use of the service. If the subscription serves both the business and personal purposes, the personal-use portion is not business credit. If it supports both taxable or zero-rated supplies and exempt supplies, apportionment may apply. Section 17 also specifies blocked credits, so check whether any restriction applies to the facts rather than assuming all subscription tax is recoverable. CGST Act, section 17

Domestic and overseas invoices: a practical comparison
| Check | Indian supplier | Overseas supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier identity | Verify the legal entity on the invoice and the GST treatment shown. | Verify the contracting and invoicing entity, its country and the service arrangement. |
| How tax may be handled | Check for a compliant GST invoice and whether the invoice details appear in the expected GST records. | Determine whether import-of-service or OIDAR treatment applies and whether the recipient or supplier must account for tax. |
| Documents and records | Retain the eligible invoice and verify supplier reporting and applicable return conditions. | Retain the supplier documents and any required reverse-charge records, then verify the tax and credit entries. |
| Use and eligibility | For either supplier, establish business use, account for any personal or exempt-supply use, and meet the ordinary ITC requirements. | |
Do not assume a tax rate or a particular treatment from the provider’s country alone. Supplier identity, service classification and the specific transaction determine what needs to be checked.
Screenshot API use and ScreenshotNeo
If you use a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo for business work, the same GST questions apply: registration, the legal supplier and its location, invoice details, use and any applicable tax treatment. The product’s features or price do not by themselves establish that a particular GST credit is allowable.

- Is the relevant business GST-registered?
- What legal entity and country are named as the supplier?
- Do you have an eligible invoice or other prescribed document with the right recipient details?
- Are supplier reporting, tax payment, GST-record and return conditions satisfied?
- What portion of the subscription is for business rather than personal use?
- Does the business make exempt supplies that require apportionment?
- If the supplier is overseas, have you determined whether reverse charge or OIDAR rules apply and handled the tax and credit entries accordingly?
The answer for a particular invoice cannot be settled without the proprietor’s registration status, supplier identity, invoice, use split and return details. For an uncertain classification or claim, ask an Indian GST practitioner to review those documents before filing.
