Sometimes—but there is no universal winner. An already-owned laptop can cost less if its measured power use and your marginal electricity rate are low, and your home connection is dependable. A VPS trades home electricity and connection dependence for server rental, data-transfer limits, setup, and monitoring. A managed cloud service adds a fee but removes the need to leave a computer running at home. Compare your own monthly costs and the reliability and effort each option requires.
Start with a like-for-like monthly comparison
For a 24/7 prerecorded-video stream, compare recurring cash costs over the same period—such as 30 days—and include the costs that apply to your chosen setup. Keep the stream quality and bitrate consistent across options. A cheap VPS headline price alone does not show that the server can encode your video, deliver the required transfer, or recover from failures.

Then judge each option on four axes: total recurring cash cost, ability to encode and deliver your chosen bitrate, continuity and recovery when a process or connection fails, and your setup and monitoring time. If one option looks cheaper only because you have excluded your own time or the cost of interruptions, state that assumption.
Calculate the laptop or PC cost from measured power
Measure the whole computer under the intended workload
Use a plug-in power meter or another suitable meter to measure the computer’s draw at the wall while the encoder runs the video and settings you plan to use. An adapter’s rated wattage is not a measurement of the computer’s actual streaming consumption. Nor is a generic desktop example a reliable estimate for your laptop.

Convert the reading into a monthly electricity estimate
- Record average wall draw in watts while the stream is running.
- For a 30-day month, multiply the measured watts by 720 hours and divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours:
watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 = kWh. - Multiply those kWh by the marginal rate on your electricity bill. Use the rate that applies to additional consumption, not a presumed national tariff.
- Add any incremental broadband/data charge, power backup, or hardware cost that the stream causes.
If you already own the computer and already pay for broadband, do not assign the full purchase price or whole internet bill to streaming unless you explain that allocation. A published illustrative calculation used a 120–200 W desktop and an assumed ₹7–₹8 per kWh to arrive at about ₹605–₹1,152 for 30 days; it is not a laptop measurement or an India-wide tariff. Estimate monthly upload data from bitrate
Bitrate—not resolution by itself—drives approximate outgoing data. At a sustained 1 Mbps, 30 days of continuous streaming sends about 324 decimal GB before protocol overhead. The calculation is 1,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. Scale that estimate to your configured bitrate:

These are planning calculations before protocol overhead. Check whether your internet plan or VPS provider measures data in decimal or binary units and how it handles overage or throttling. Before choosing a server, verify the plan’s outbound-transfer allowance and overage or throttling rules, location, CPU capacity for your selected encoder workload, RAM, storage, taxes, billing term, renewal price, and any required upgrade. “Unmetered” or “zero egress” wording does not by itself establish throughput, uptime, or enough CPU for continuous encoding.
Examples reported by a comparison page checked on October 3, 2026, were an advertised Inservers starting price of ₹880/month and a CloudPe listing at ₹930/month for 4 GB RAM and 30 GB NVMe. Choose settings that fit your upload connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingestion at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not a requirement to stream at 1080p; select a quality and bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), testing with similar audio and video motion, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube directs creators to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in their encoder. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Keep the stream key private and use the same content, motion, and audio conditions in your test that you expect during the broadcast.

Plan for the YouTube broadcast lifecycle and content rules
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that an arbitrarily long, single broadcast will be archived as one video. If keeping an archive matters, plan the stream lifecycle around the platform’s stated behavior—for example, use scheduled segments or restarts appropriate to your content and setup rather than assuming one perpetual broadcast becomes one complete archive.
Continuous availability does not grant rights to the video or music. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the terms that apply to your content and channel. Monetization and channel eligibility are separate from the technical ability to send an encoder stream; do not assume that looping prerecorded content will qualify for monetization.

An already-owned laptop or PC
This can be the lower-cash-cost choice when measured wall draw is modest, the applicable marginal electricity rate is low, and the home internet and power supply are stable. It also keeps setup and recovery work with you, and a home outage or computer failure can interrupt the stream.

A VPS
A VPS can make sense when you are comfortable administering a server and have confirmed that its CPU, transfer allowance, storage, and billing terms fit the stream. It moves the always-on compute and electricity burden away from home, but not the need to configure, secure, monitor, and recover the stream.

Common cost-comparison mistakes
- Using adapter wattage as consumption: measure the whole computer at the wall while it is encoding.
- Comparing a VPS sticker price with an electricity estimate: add transfer, taxes, storage, upgrades, and your setup and recovery time.
- Assuming resolution determines data use: use the sustained bitrate for the data estimate, then allow for overhead.
