A typical compatible model may write CD-R and CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD+R, and rewritable DVD-RW and DVD+RW media. Some models add dual-layer DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL, and a smaller subset supports DVD-RAM.
The word “DVD writer” is not a complete compatibility guarantee. Manufacturers list reading, playback and writing capabilities separately, and support varies by exact model. Check the drive’s write-media specification for the precise blank disc you plan to use, then confirm your computer, cable, operating system, power arrangement and burning software meet that model’s requirements.

What an external DVD writer actually does
An external DVD writer is an optical drive in a separate enclosure that connects to a computer, usually through a USB connection. Its laser can read prerecorded discs and, if the hardware and firmware support the relevant media, record data onto blank discs. “External” describes the enclosure and connection; it does not determine which disc formats the mechanism can write.
A drive advertised as a DVD writer normally handles at least some DVD recordable media, but CD writing still needs to appear in the manufacturer’s specifications. Verbatim’s External Slimline CD/DVD Writer (model 98938) and ASUS’s SDRW-08D2S-U both publish CD and DVD write formats. Other drives may be DVD readers only, or may write DVDs while omitting particular CD, dual-layer or rewritable formats.

Works with most computers from brands like Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and Samsung. 👉 Important: Designed specifically for computers. It is NOT compatible with TVs, tablets, game consoles (e.g., PlayStation, Xbox), car stereos, or standalone Blu-ray players.
- 【SLIM & PORTABLE DESIGN – BUILT-IN CABLE, READY TO GO】With an integrated cable design, slim body, and stylish matte finish, this lightweight CD/DVD drive is both durable and portable. Easily slip it into your laptop bag or backpack and use it anytime, anywhere—perfect for business, travel, or home use
- 【MULTIFUNCTIONAL & RELIABLE OPERATION】 Equipped with intelligent error correction and anti-shock technology, this drive supports reading, writing, and burning discs. If the drive is not recognized or a disc cannot be read, try restarting your computer or testing with a different, standard CD-R or DVD-R disc. The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Think of compatibility as three separate questions:
- Can the mechanism write this physical media? The write-media list answers this.
- Can the computer communicate with the drive? The interface, cable, operating-system and power requirements answer this.
- Can your software create the disc type you want? Authoring support determines whether you can make a data disc, audio CD, video disc or another format.
All three must line up for a successful burn.
Disc formats an external DVD writer may support
The table below separates the common families. A check mark in a retailer listing, a playback list or a generic product title is not enough; the exact format should be named in the manufacturer’s writing specification.
| Blank media | Recording behavior | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CD-R | Recordable once; the recorded contents are not normally erased and reused. | Look for CD-R under write or record formats. Verbatim and ASUS list CD-R writing on the cited models. |
| CD-RW | Rewritable CD media that can be erased and recorded again, subject to the disc and software. | Confirm CD-RW writing separately from CD-R. Both cited Verbatim and ASUS models list it. |
| DVD-R and DVD+R | Recordable DVD families. The “minus” and “plus” standards are distinct formats. | Check each family independently; a listing for DVD-R does not automatically establish DVD+R support. |
| DVD-RW and DVD+RW | Rewritable DVD families. | Verify both the minus and plus rewritable formats if you need flexibility. |
| DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL | Dual-layer recordable DVDs, with the format and supported speed depending on the model. | Look for the exact dual-layer designation, not merely “dual layer” in a headline. |
| DVD-RAM | A separate rewritable DVD standard. | Support is not universal. It must be listed explicitly in the model’s compatible-media or write specification. |
| CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and prerecorded audio, video or photo discs | Usually describes reading or playback. | Do not treat a playback or read list as evidence that the drive can burn that medium. |
CD-R versus CD-RW
CD-R is intended for recording that remains fixed after finalization, making it suitable when you want a disc that will not be routinely rewritten. CD-RW is designed for repeated recording and erasing. A drive must list CD-RW write support; the ability to read CD-RW discs does not prove it can record them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW
DVD-R and DVD+R are separate recordable standards, while DVD-RW and DVD+RW are their rewritable counterparts. Some drives support all four; others list only a subset. If a project, legacy player or organization specifies one family, match that exact family in the drive’s write-media list and in the blank-disc purchase.

Dual-layer DVD media
Dual-layer recording is model-dependent. A specification should identify DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL or both. A drive that writes single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R is not automatically a dual-layer writer. Manufacturers may publish different maximum write speeds for each dual-layer format, so check the per-format speed table when speed matters.
DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM is another format that cannot be inferred from general DVD writing support. The Transcend TS8XDVDRW manual lists DVD-RAM among that model’s compatible media, alongside CD-R/RW, DVD±R, DVD±RW and DVD±R DL. That example demonstrates why DVD-RAM needs its own explicit check rather than an assumption based on the word “DVD.”
Why read and write specifications must be separated
Manufacturers often publish one section for supported media and another for playback or read modes. A drive may read DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, prerecorded audio discs or video discs even when it cannot write those formats. Conversely, a blank CD-R or DVD+R is useful to you only if the drive’s write list names it.
Recommended Free Tools
When comparing a product page or manual, find headings such as “write,” “record,” “supported media (write)” or “recording formats.” Treat “read,” “playback,” “compatible discs” or a generic “DVD/CD support” heading as incomplete until you find the writing subsection. This distinction prevents a common mistake: buying blank media that the drive can recognize but not burn.

Examples from published model specifications
Verbatim External Slimline CD/DVD Writer 98938
The published media list for Verbatim’s model 98938 includes CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD+R double-layer media, and DVD-RW and DVD+RW. The product is described as reading and writing CDs and DVDs. Its list is a useful illustration of a drive that covers the common CD and DVD families, but it should not be treated as a specification for every external drive.
ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U
ASUS lists write speeds for CD-R and CD-RW, DVD+R and DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RW, and DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL on the SDRW-08D2S-U page. The maximum speed varies by format. If you are comparing this model with another drive, compare those per-format figures rather than relying on one headline speed.
Transcend TS8XDVDRW
The TS8XDVDRW manual lists CD-R/RW, DVD±R, DVD±RW, DVD±R DL and DVD-RAM as compatible media. The same manual gives operating-system and hardware requirements for that particular product. Those requirements are not a universal guarantee for every USB DVD writer; use the manual for the model you actually own or intend to buy.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
- Identify the exact model number. Record the model printed on the enclosure or packaging. A seller’s generic title such as “external DVD burner” may cover several mechanisms with different format lists.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification or manual. Prefer the manufacturer’s own document over an abbreviated retailer description.
- Find the write-media section. Search within the page or PDF for “write,” “record,” “supported media (write)” or an equivalent heading.
- Match the blank disc exactly. For CDs, check CD-R or CD-RW. For DVDs, check DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW as appropriate. If you need dual layer, look specifically for DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL. If you need DVD-RAM, require an explicit DVD-RAM entry.
- Read the speed table. Maximum speeds can differ between CD-R, CD-RW, each DVD family and dual-layer media. A single advertised number may not apply to your disc.
- Check computer requirements in the same document. Confirm the operating system, USB or other port, cable arrangement and power requirements. These are product-specific, as shown by the requirements in the Transcend manual.
- Confirm authoring software support. Make sure your application can create the intended data, audio or video disc. Hardware write support alone does not establish that an included or installed program supports every authoring workflow.
Computer, connection and software requirements
Media compatibility is only one part of the setup. An external drive can fail to appear, disconnect during a burn or refuse to start if the computer cannot supply the required connection or power. Follow the selected model’s instructions for the supported operating systems, port type, cable and any separate power arrangement. Do not assume that a cable that physically fits provides the required power or transfer behavior.
Operating-system support also matters for device detection and burning applications. A drive may be mechanically capable of writing a format while the computer lacks a compatible driver, permissions or authoring program. Install software that supports the job you intend to perform and check whether it can finalize the disc, create the required file system or author a playable audio or video disc.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Typical burning workflows
Data CD or DVD
- Insert a blank format that appears in the drive’s write list, such as CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R.
- In your operating system or disc-burning application, choose a data-disc project.
- Add the files and review the estimated space and file-system options offered by the software.
- Start the burn and avoid disconnecting, sleeping or powering down the computer until the application reports completion.
- Finalize or close the disc when you need broad read compatibility, then test it in another drive.
Rewritable media
For CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW, choose a rewritable-disc project or an erase command when reusing the disc. Erasing and rewriting require both a drive that supports that exact rewritable family and software that exposes the operation.

Audio or video discs
Select an audio-CD or video-disc authoring workflow rather than a generic file-copy operation when the destination player expects a specific disc structure. The physical drive may write the media while the application determines whether the result is a standards-compliant, playable disc. Verify the application’s supported project types before starting.

Common failure modes and fixes
The drive reads a disc but will not burn it
Recheck the write-media list. The disc may be a playback format, or it may be a family the drive reads but does not write. For example, reading DVD-ROM does not establish DVD-ROM recording, and reading DVD-RAM does not prove DVD-RAM writing.
A dual-layer disc fails while single-layer discs work
Confirm that the exact DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL format is listed. Also check the application’s dual-layer support and the model’s per-format speed requirements. Do not substitute a general “DVD writer” description for an explicit dual-layer entry.
The drive is not detected
Check the model’s operating-system and port requirements, reconnect the supplied cable, try the documented port arrangement and verify any required power connection. Consult the model manual before assuming the optical mechanism is defective.

Use media named in the write specification, avoid interrupting the connection or power, and use the software’s verification option if available. If only one format fails, compare that format with the manufacturer’s write list and speed table rather than changing unrelated settings.
The disc burns but will not play in a particular device
Separate three issues: whether the drive wrote the media, whether the authoring software created the right disc structure, and whether the playback device accepts that disc family. A successful burn does not guarantee compatibility with every older player or recorder.
How to compare two external DVD writers
When both candidates appear to burn CDs and DVDs, compare the details that affect your actual project:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Exact write formats | Do both list CD-R/RW, DVD-R/+R and DVD-RW/+RW? Which one lists DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL or DVD-RAM? |
| Per-format speed | Are the maximum speeds stated separately for the media you will use, or is only a broad headline speed shown? |
| Computer interface | Does the connector and cable match an available port on your computer? |
| Operating-system support | Does the manual identify your operating system and any required software? |
| Power arrangement | Can your computer provide the required power, or does the drive specify an additional supply or cable? |
| Authoring software | Can your preferred application create data, audio, video and rewritable projects? |
There is no format list that ranks every drive for every user. Choose the model whose documented write formats and system requirements match your blank media and computer, rather than choosing solely by enclosure size or a generic “DVD burner” label.
