Can an AWS Role Tell a Human From an AI Agent? The Identity Gap

No—not from the role name or role permissions alone. An AWS IAM role defines permissions and a trusted path for obtaining temporary credentials; it does not necessarily identify the human or AI agent using a particular session. AWS provides session-context controls, including session tags, that can help distinguish and govern those sessions. The gap matters when an agent inherits a role designed for a person: its actions may be automated, fast, and difficult to attribute without deliberate controls.

What does an AWS role identify—and what does it not?

A role is an IAM identity with a set of permissions that is intended to be assumed by whoever needs it. It has no standard long-term password or access key; assuming it produces temporary security credentials. Consequently, a role ARN identifies an authorization boundary, not necessarily one unique operator. AWS IAM documentation on roles

That distinction is easy to miss when a human developer and an automated agent both use the same role. The role’s permissions tell AWS what the session may do, while the role itself does not, by default, fully describe who or what initiated a particular request. AWS does provide identity and session mechanisms; the limitation is not that IAM can never distinguish principals, but that a shared role and its permission policy alone may not provide the attribution or differentiated treatment an operator needs.

Why does the human-versus-agent distinction change the threat model?

Automation can act faster than a person can intervene

AWS’s Security Blog describes how an unintended agent action can occur at machine speed, and notes that agents may not recognize ambiguity or unstated policy boundaries as a person might. The article, published April 2, 2026, identifies risks including privilege escalation, confused-deputy issues, session hijacking, code injection, and supply-chain threats. A broad role designed around a human’s judgment can therefore create a larger potential impact when used autonomously. AWS Security Blog: Four security principles for agentic AI systems

Tool access can turn a model decision into a real operation

AWS Prescriptive Guidance frames agent activity in terms of perceiving, reasoning, and acting. The act layer has direct operational consequences: a tool call can affect production systems or sensitive data using legitimate credentials. The guidance highlights tool misuse, credential exposure or misconfiguration, and cascading failures across connected agents and services as risk areas. Scoping each agent’s responsibilities and allow-listing tool interactions can reduce the actions it can reach. AWS Prescriptive Guidance: Security for agentic AI on AWS (PDF)

Delegation can become a confused-deputy problem

AWS defines a confused deputy as an entity without permission persuading a more privileged entity to perform an action. Its documentation discusses third-party and cross-service delegation; external IDs address the cross-account case. An agent or tool server can present a related delegation risk if it uses authority the initiating user did not intend to grant. An external ID is not a general-purpose control for identifying AI-agent sessions. AWS IAM documentation: The confused deputy problem

How are human access, workload roles, and agent sessions different?

AWS recommends federation with temporary credentials for human users, and temporary role credentials for workloads. Those patterns help avoid long-lived credentials, but they address identity provenance and credential handling—not, by themselves, every audit or authorization distinction needed between a human and an agent using a session. AWS’s agent-access guidance recommends adding session context and narrowing permissions for agent operations. Access pattern Identity provenance Authorization scope Credential duration and refresh Session attribution
Human federation Federated human user Role permissions; further controls depend on the session setup Temporary credentials, per AWS’s human-access recommendation; duration and refresh details depend on the identity-provider flow Depends on the identity and session context carried into AWS
Workload role Application or workload assuming a role Role permissions Temporary role credentials; duration and refresh depend on the workload’s role-assumption setup The role alone does not necessarily distinguish the workload’s particular operator or execution context
Agent session An agent acting through a role or tool-access pattern Role permissions can be narrowed with a session policy for an operation Temporary role credentials; exact duration and refresh path depend on the architecture A controlled session tag can identify an AI-driven session for policy differentiation and attribution

The comparison describes AWS’s general recommendations and the controls in its agent-access guidance, not a single required architecture. Exact credential refresh and attribution depend on how the identity provider, role assumption, and tool path are configured.

Which AWS controls address the identity gap?

Use layers rather than expecting one policy or tag to solve the whole problem. Trust determines who can obtain a role session, role permissions establish its outer authority, session policies can narrow a particular session, and protected session context can inform policy and attribution.

Trust policy: decide who may assume the role

The role trust policy specifies trusted principals, and conditions can add requirements. Review the actual account context and avoid overly broad principals. Trust answers who may obtain credentials; it does not by itself establish that every resulting session has the right scope for an agent. AWS Security Blog: How to use trust policies with IAM roles

  • Warranty: Erase electronic data off most devices. SO BE CAREFUL PLACING OR STORING ELECTRONICS NEAR,To keep them away from your wallet avoid damaging your credit pinch fingers slamming together or grab up metallic objects

Role permissions: set the outer boundary

Permissions attached to the role define what its sessions can be authorized to do. Starting an agent with a broadly privileged developer or administrator role makes the potential impact of a mistaken or abused tool call larger. Treat the role’s permissions as an upper boundary, not as a substitute for agent-specific restrictions. Temporary credentials: limit reliance on long-lived secrets

AWS recommends temporary credentials for humans through federation and for workloads through IAM roles. Temporary credentials reduce reliance on long-lived keys, but they do not alone distinguish a human session from an agent session if both use the same role path. AWS IAM security best practices

Session policy: narrow an individual operation

AWS’s agent-access guidance recommends passing a session policy when assuming a role for a tool invocation. A session policy can restrict the permissions available in that session; it cannot grant permissions beyond those allowed by the role. Effective access is the intersection of the role’s permissions and the session policy. This lets an agent’s tool call use a narrower scope than the role’s full permission ceiling. AWS Security Blog: Secure AI agent access patterns to AWS resources using Model Context Protocol

Session tags: carry controlled identity context

AWS describes attaching session tags during role assumption to mark a session as AI-driven, so IAM policies can treat agent and human sessions differently. A tag is useful only when the assumption path reliably sets it and protects it from being supplied or changed by an untrusted caller. A tag is context for policy and records, not a replacement for a sound trust policy or appropriately limited permissions. AWS Security Blog: Secure AI agent access patterns to AWS resources using Model Context Protocol

Agent scope and tool allow lists: limit reachable actions

Give each agent a defined responsibility and allow only the tool interactions it needs. These controls constrain which capabilities can be invoked when model output influences tool selection, reducing the paths through which an unintended action or compromise can affect systems. How should you apply the model?

  1. Separate principal paths. Use federation for human access and workload roles for applications or agents where appropriate, rather than assuming the role name will reveal the actor. AWS’s IAM best practices describe these distinct patterns: Security best practices in IAM.
  2. Review the trust policy. Check which principals can assume the role and which conditions constrain that access in the relevant account. See AWS’s guide to IAM role trust policies.
  3. Reduce the role’s permission ceiling. Remove permissions the agent’s responsibility does not require; do not make a human-oriented admin role the default agent role.
  4. Narrow tool sessions. Where the design supports it, pass a session policy scoped to the individual operation, remembering it can reduce but not expand the role’s permissions. See AWS’s agent access patterns.
  5. Set and protect session context. Use a controlled session tag to distinguish AI-driven sessions in policy and audit workflows, and verify that untrusted callers cannot forge the context. The same AWS guidance describes session tags for differentiating agent sessions.
  6. Constrain the agent’s tools. Allow-list permitted tool interactions and keep each agent’s remit small enough to reduce unintended reach. See AWS Prescriptive Guidance on agentic AI security.
