Short answer: An AI chatbot can simulate parts of a deceased person’s style, stories, voice or recorded responses when it is given enough personal material. It cannot bring that person back, verify what they would think now, or provide authentic testimony, consent or advice from them. Some systems generate new language; others retrieve answers that were recorded in advance. That difference determines what the interaction means—and where it can mislead you.

What a “griefbot” actually is

Academic and media coverage uses several names for conversational systems built from information about someone who has died: griefbot, deadbot, deathbot, thanabot and generative ghost. The labels describe a simulation assembled from digital traces, not a consciousness or a surviving part of the person.

The traces may include emails, text messages, social-media posts, diaries, photographs, audio recordings, video, interview answers or a biography supplied by relatives. A service may search those materials for a relevant passage, or it may use them to adapt a language or voice model that creates an entirely new response. In either case, the output is produced by software operating on data.

That distinction matters when a reply sounds uncannily familiar. A model can reproduce a phrase that appeared in its source material, infer a likely response from patterns in the material, or generate a sentence the person never uttered. Familiarity is evidence that the system has learned a pattern; it is not evidence that the deceased person is present.

How these systems produce an apparent conversation

1. Someone supplies a source record

The data donor is the person whose information is used. Sometimes the donor recorded answers or voice samples while alive. In other cases, relatives or an estate assemble messages, stories and recordings after the death. The quantity and quality of the material shape what the system can imitate. A few public posts cannot establish a complete personality, and a polished biography may reflect the author’s memories rather than the deceased person’s own words.

2. The service organizes or adapts the material

A retrieval system indexes recordings or written answers so it can select a passage related to a user’s question. A generative system uses the material as examples, instructions or background context and then predicts the next words in a reply. Voice systems analyze acoustic features and synthesize speech that resembles the supplied speaker. Some products combine these approaches, such as a generated text answer read aloud in a synthetic voice.

3. The user receives one of several kinds of output

Approach Typical source material What the user receives Main uncertainty
Generative text or speech Messages, emails, posts, writing, prompts or biographical facts A newly generated reply, sometimes spoken with a cloned voice The wording may be invented while sounding authoritative
Recorded-answer retrieval Prerecorded video or audio answers to prepared questions An existing clip selected as the closest match There may be no recorded answer for the exact question
Life-story avatar Prompts, interviews and personal stories A conversational avatar that draws on the supplied life narrative Omissions, framing and generated details can be mistaken for memories
Voice model Recorded phrases or other speech samples Synthesized speech in an approximated voice A familiar sound does not authenticate the words being spoken

These categories reflect examples described by the Associated Press in June 2024, including StoryFile’s prerecorded-video approach, HereAfter AI’s prompt- and story-based life avatar, and Eternos’s voice system. They illustrate a technical range rather than a current product audit; features, availability and prices may have changed.

What an AI recreation can convincingly imitate

Writing style and conversational habits

If the system has enough messages or writing, it may reproduce vocabulary, sentence length, humor, greetings or recurring expressions. It can also use supplied biographical facts such as a job, hometown or family relationship. The result may feel personal because the model has learned associations that are distinctive to that individual.

Stories and recorded answers

A retrieval service can replay an answer the person actually recorded. A life-story system can locate or summarize a supplied anecdote. Those are still bounded by what was captured and how it was organized. Silence on a topic does not mean the person had no opinion; it may simply mean no source material covered the question.

Voice and visual presence

Voice synthesis can approximate pitch, cadence and pronunciation. The AP described an Eternos capture process using 300 spoken phrases in 2024. That figure is a reported product-process detail, not an independently validated measure of quality or identity. A video avatar can present prerecorded footage or a generated face, but visual realism likewise says nothing about whether a new statement is genuine.

What it cannot establish

It is not the returned person

No conversational output establishes that a mind, soul or personal identity has been restored. The system has no demonstrated access to the deceased person’s private thoughts, present awareness or posthumous wishes. Treating generated text as a message from the dead can turn a simulation into a source of false certainty.

It cannot reliably tell you what they would say

Generative models predict plausible language. They can combine unrelated facts, misread a relationship, or confidently produce a sentence that never existed in the source record. Even a response that matches the person’s usual tone may be a fabrication. Do not use it as evidence of consent, an instruction about an estate, medical guidance, a legal position or a final wish.

It does not literally continue the former relationship

A 2025 philosophical analysis argues that interaction with a thanabot cannot be a true continuation of the prior human relationship, although it may support a person’s continuing bond with someone who has died. The analysis also cautions that such interaction cannot, by itself, provide the benefits of a healthy and rewarding human relationship. The distinction allows someone to value a meaningful ritual without mistaking it for reciprocal human presence.

Can talking to a dead loved one through AI help with grief?

There is no established outcome figure showing that griefbots improve bereavement for a general population, and the available evidence does not support presenting one as therapy. Aarhus University’s bereavement project, revised in 2026, describes possible comfort or a perceived sense of presence alongside possible difficulty accepting the death or adjusting to life without the person. It is studying bereaved people’s experiences because empirical knowledge remains limited.

Responses are likely to differ. One person may use a short, clearly framed exchange as a memorial activity. Another may feel distressed by an unexpected answer, become dependent on repeated conversations, or experience the simulation as an obstacle to accepting the loss. Neither reaction proves that the technology is universally helpful or harmful.

Use a griefbot, if at all, as an optional memorial tool rather than a clinical treatment or replacement for family, friends, a bereavement group or a qualified professional. If grief is overwhelming, persistent, or accompanied by thoughts of self-harm, seek human and emergency support in your region rather than relying on a chatbot.

Consent, privacy and who controls the simulation

Three people can have different interests: the data donor whose material is used, the data recipient who stores or controls it, and the service interactant who talks with the bot. A relative may want access while an estate, employer or platform controls the files. A person who agreed to record a story may not have agreed to unlimited future conversations or synthetic voice generation.

In a 2024 paper on griefbots, deadbots and postmortem avatars, Tomasz Hollanek and Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska recommend meaningful transparency, mutual consent from donors and interactants, adult-only access and procedures for retiring a bot. These are ethical recommendations, not universal legal requirements. The paper’s central practical implication is that everyone affected should know what is being built, how it behaves and how it can be stopped.

  • Permission: Establish what the deceased person agreed to, what the estate permits and what current users consent to.
  • Purpose: Define whether the system is for private remembrance, family access, research or public display.
  • Disclosure: Label generated text, synthetic voice and avatars visibly in every interaction.
  • Access: Restrict accounts, set an adult-age boundary and remove people who were not authorized.
  • Retention: Check how long uploads, transcripts and derived models are kept, whether they train other systems, and how deletion works.
  • Retirement: Decide who can pause, export or permanently deactivate the simulation if it becomes harmful or the service closes.

Provider practices vary. Current terms and privacy documentation must be checked directly before uploading private messages, recordings or photographs; older descriptions do not establish today’s retention or deletion rules.

How to compare a griefbot before using it

Ask the provider for specific answers rather than relying on an emotional demonstration. The following framework separates capabilities that are often presented together.

Question Why it matters What to verify
Does it retrieve or generate? Retrieval can replay an actual recording; generation can invent wording. Whether each answer is traceable to a source clip or newly produced.
What data is required? More intimate material increases both resemblance and privacy exposure. Prompts, biography, messages, audio, video and minimum sample requirements.
What is the output? Text, voice, prerecorded video and an animated avatar create different risks of mistaken identity. Which elements are synthetic and how they are labeled.
Who may use it? Unrestricted access can expose family data or influence vulnerable users. Account controls, age limits, sharing permissions and administrator roles.
How do you leave? A memorial should not become permanent by default. Export, deletion, model retirement, billing cancellation and a named decision-maker.

A safer process if you decide to create one

  1. Write the purpose first. Decide whether you want to preserve stories, hear recorded answers or experiment with conversation. Avoid vague goals such as “bring them back.”
  2. Inventory the material. Separate the person’s own words and recordings from relatives’ descriptions, public posts and edited photographs. Record where each item came from.
  3. Confirm permissions. Review instructions left by the deceased, estate authority and the privacy interests of living people who appear in messages or recordings.
  4. Read current terms. Look specifically for retention, human review, secondary training, sharing, deletion and what happens if the provider shuts down.
  5. Start with the least revealing data. Test a small, non-sensitive set before uploading a complete archive. Keep originals in an independent, secure location.
  6. Demand clear labels. The interface should state when a response, voice or image is generated and should identify the source when it is replaying a recording.
  7. Set boundaries. Prohibit questions about medical, financial, legal or estate decisions. Do not allow the system to contact other people or publish messages automatically.
  8. Create a stop plan. Choose who can pause or retire it, how family members can report a problem and when you will review whether continued use is helping.

When to pause or retire the chatbot

Stop an interaction when the system’s behavior is causing distress, sleep disruption, compulsive checking, conflict among relatives or confusion about what was actually recorded. A generated reply that pressures you to keep talking, asks for money, gives an instruction that conflicts with known documents, or claims certainty about the deceased person’s wishes is a warning sign—not a revelation.

Save factual records separately from chatbot transcripts. If a decision concerns an estate, health, safety or a legal obligation, use the original documents and qualified human advice. A bot can help organize memories, but it cannot authenticate a signature, witness consent or replace a professional judgment.

Preserving a life without pretending to recreate it

If the goal is legacy rather than simulated conversation, a curated archive may be less misleading. Families can preserve photographs, letters, recipes, interviews and audio with dates, captions and permission notes. Recording a person’s stories while they are alive can protect memories for future generations, but it is not equivalent to recreating the person. A digital voice recorder or similar capture device is simply a way to preserve source material; it does not make later generated speech authentic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Present the archive as a record made by a human being, with gaps and context. That framing can honor the person without asking software to speak for them.

The honest answer

An AI chatbot can recreate recognizable fragments of a deceased person’s communication, sometimes with startling emotional realism. It may quote an actual recording, synthesize a familiar voice or generate a plausible new sentence from personal data. None of those capabilities demonstrates that the person has returned or that the output expresses an authentic posthumous view. Because evidence about grief outcomes is still limited, responsible use depends on informed consent, privacy protection, unmistakable labeling, restricted access and a real ability to stop.
