Yes. An 1872 home can often switch from a gas combi boiler to a heat pump without lifting every floor or replacing every radiator. The deciding factor is whether the existing heating system can deliver enough heat room by room at the water temperatures planned for the heat pump. A combi-to-heat-pump change also needs a new plan for hot water, usually involving a storage cylinder.
Do all the floors need to come up?
No—not simply because the house is old or because it is changing to a heat pump. A heat pump can supply an existing wet radiator system if the radiators, pipework and system design can meet the home’s heating needs. Underfloor heating is one possible heat emitter, not a prerequisite.

Historic England cautions that sound existing systems should not be presumed to need wholesale replacement: “Many historic buildings will have existing heating systems with pipework and emitters that are in good condition. It should not be assumed that these systems will need to be entirely replaced.” Its guidance concerns historic buildings generally; it does not establish what is suitable for this particular house.
Whether any floor needs local work depends on the layout and the proposed plumbing routes. The year 1872 alone cannot determine that. A survey needs to establish the floor construction, existing pipework, heating layout and any room-specific changes.

Will the existing radiators work with a heat pump?
Possibly. Heat pumps typically operate more efficiently at lower flow temperatures than conventional gas boilers, so a radiator that heats a room adequately with the current boiler may not provide enough output at the heat pump’s planned temperature. The answer depends on calculated room heat loss and each emitter’s output at that temperature—not on the house’s age or a blanket rule that all radiators must go.
What to ask the designer to calculate
- Heat loss for each room, rather than a system size based only on the existing boiler’s output.
- The proposed heat-pump flow temperature and each room’s radiator output at that temperature.
- Whether the existing pipework and system flow can support the design.
- Which rooms, if any, need a larger or additional emitter, and why.
Historic England says emitter and pipework sizing should be assessed by a building-services engineer. If a radiator falls short, a larger or double-panel radiator, an additional emitter or another room-specific measure may be considered. A double-panel radiator is not an automatic upgrade: its required output, dimensions, connections and compatibility should follow from the design.

Radiators or underfloor heating: what changes?
Underfloor heating can work well with low flow temperatures, but installing it can be disruptive. Historic England notes that it responds slowly; raising or altering floors can also affect doors, skirtings and steps, and work in a listed building may need consent. Keeping serviceable radiators avoids that particular floor work when calculations show they can meet the room loads.
| Approach | What it involves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Retain existing radiators | Keep serviceable emitters and pipework where the room-by-room design confirms sufficient output at the planned flow temperature. | Least emitter disruption, but not suitable for a room whose existing radiator cannot meet its calculated demand. |
| Upgrade selected emitters | Change or add radiators in rooms where calculations show a shortfall; retain the rest if they meet the design. | Targeted work rather than a whole-house replacement, with room-specific installation disruption. |
| Install underfloor heating | Use floor-based emitters as part of the heating design. | Can suit low-temperature operation, but may mean disruptive floor alterations and slower response; floor changes can affect other features. |
A high-temperature heat-pump option may reduce the need to replace pipes or radiators, but Citizens Advice says it uses more electricity than a low-temperature option. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends on the home’s survey and full design; it is not a substitute for checking room heat loss and emitter output.

What changes when a combi boiler is replaced?
A combi boiler heats domestic hot water on demand. A heat pump generally heats stored hot water instead, so the project needs a suitable cylinder or another properly designed storage solution. Plan its location, space requirements and connecting pipework before settling the heating layout or project scope. A cylinder may use cupboard space and affect plumbing routes.
The hot-water design should cover the household’s needs as well as space heating. For a Boiler Upgrade Scheme-funded installation, Ofgem says the system must meet the scheme’s technical conditions, including full space-heating and hot-water requirements.

What should be checked before choosing the system?
Ask for a whole-house design that addresses the actual property, not an estimate inferred from “1872.” RICS and Historic England guidance support assessing the existing building and heating system rather than assuming wholesale replacement.

Ask the designer to state the proposed flow temperature and the emitter output for each room at that temperature.
- Identify what can stay. Keep serviceable radiators and pipework where the calculations support it; request a room-specific explanation for any proposed replacement or addition.
- Plan hot-water storage and routes. Confirm the cylinder or other designed solution, its location, and the plumbing needed to connect it.
- Review insulation and draught-proofing alongside the design. Use the EPC or survey to prioritise practical measures. Ofgem says measures such as loft or cavity-wall insulation can reduce heat loss and help low-carbon heating performance; that does not mean every older home must undertake every insulation measure before installing a heat pump.
- Check the proposed outdoor-unit location and services. Review space, air circulation, nearby neighbour-facing windows and noise, as well as electrical supply and any necessary local approvals.
- Check the property’s designation and proposed works. Being built in 1872 does not prove the house is listed. Historic England says heat pumps in listed buildings or conservation areas are likely to need consent; check the actual designation and relevant requirements for the proposed installation.
- Get multiple detailed quotes. Ofgem recommends quotes from multiple installers and requires an MCS-certified installer for an eligible Boiler Upgrade Scheme installation.

- Quiet, Durable & Built for Outdoor Use: Operating at approximately 53 dB, this smart heat pump provides efficient pool heating with minimal noise. The durable ABS cabinet resists UV exposure, corrosion, fading, and cracking, making it ideal for long-term outdoor installation in demanding environments.
| Choice | What to compare | Evidence-based consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Low-temperature design with existing or selectively upgraded emitters | Room heat loss, radiator output, pipework, building work and design performance. | Existing radiators may be retained where calculations show sufficient output; only rooms with a demonstrated shortfall need a different emitter plan. |
| High-temperature heat-pump option | Installation work against expected electricity use and the full system design. | Citizens Advice says a high-temperature option may cost less to install than replacing pipes or radiators, but uses more electricity. The comparison is property-specific. |
| Air-source heat pump | Outdoor-unit siting, space, noise considerations, electrical supply and cost. | Citizens Advice stated an average cost of £13,000 in 2024; this is not a current quote or a forecast for this home. |
| Ground-source heat pump | Available land, ground-loop or borehole work, indoor space, cost and system efficiency. | Citizens Advice stated an average cost of £31,000 in 2024 and describes ground-source systems as more expensive to install and usually more efficient. Trenches or potentially more expensive boreholes may be required; the average is not a current quote for this home. |
Historic England’s Main Mill and Kiln case example describes a non-domestic heritage installation with 10 vertical boreholes at 187 metres deep, two 59 kW heat pumps and an estimated 69% of energy use supplied by the heat-pump system. The page’s publication date is not stated. Those figures describe that particular non-domestic example, not a domestic design or expected result for an 1872 house.
Will bills be higher or lower?
The build year does not predict the bill change. The result depends on factors including heat loss, household use, electricity tariffs, the heat pump’s efficiency, the existing boiler’s efficiency and whether the gas supply remains. A quote should explain the proposed design and assumptions; a universal savings figure would not be reliable for this home without those details.
Can the Boiler Upgrade Scheme help?
Ofgem’s property-owner guidance is version 5.1 and applies to applications properly made on or after 28 April 2026. Ofgem says its updated guidance for the uplifted grant applies from 21 July 2026. Check Ofgem’s current rules and the property’s eligibility before relying on a grant amount: the evidence here does not establish an award or the grant amount for this house.
