Sometimes. On supported Fire tablets, Alexa can hear the wake word while the display is off, especially when the tablet is connected to power or running Show Mode. Amazon also warns that some tablets may not detect the wake word with the screen off while unplugged. Your result depends on the exact model and generation, Alexa Hands-Free settings, power state, software, and whether the request needs an unlock code.
What determines whether Alexa works with the display off?
Amazon does not promise one behavior for every Fire tablet. Its support guidance describes “always-ready” Alexa hands-free as available on certain tablets when the screen is on and/or the tablet is connected to power, or when the tablet is in Show Mode. That wording is important: hands-free support is conditional, not a guarantee that an unplugged, screen-off tablet will always listen.

Wake-word detection and screen behavior are separate from the tablet’s ability to answer a request. A device might hear “Alexa” while its display is dark but still ask for a passcode before completing a personal or security-sensitive action. Show Mode is also a separate feature with its own compatibility list; a tablet can support hands-free Alexa without supporting Show Mode.

- Model and generation: only listed Fire tablet generations support Alexa Hands-Free Mode.
- Power state: Amazon explicitly cautions that some tablets may not detect the wake word when the screen is off and the tablet is unplugged.
- Feature settings: Alexa and Hands-Free Mode must both be enabled. Show Mode, if available, must be activated separately.
Which Fire tablets support Alexa hands-free?
Amazon’s Alexa hands-free support page lists these generations. The list identifies hardware support; it does not provide a model-by-model guarantee for wake detection while the screen is off and unplugged.

Amazon’s support page also says Alexa Hands-Free can be toggled from Quick Actions. If your tablet is not one of the listed generations, or the Hands-Free control is absent, do not assume that a software update will add the feature; compatibility can depend on hardware.
How to turn on Alexa Hands-Free Mode
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Select Alexa.
- Turn on Alexa if it is disabled.
- Turn on Hands-Free Mode.
- For a faster check later, swipe down to open Quick Actions and verify that the Alexa Hands-Free toggle is enabled.
After enabling it, test with a simple command such as “Alexa, what time is it?” while the screen is awake. Then lock the tablet or let the display time out and repeat the test. Finally, test while the tablet is connected to its charger. This three-part test distinguishes a setup problem from the unplugged, screen-off limitation Amazon describes.
What a successful test looks like
The tablet should respond without touching the screen. When Alexa is sending captured audio to Amazon’s cloud, Amazon says the tablet displays a blue line. Wake-word spotting occurs on the device; after the wake word is recognized, the tablet streams audio, including a fraction of a second immediately before the wake word.

Why Alexa may not respond with the screen off
The tablet is unplugged
This is the most common explanation when Alexa works with the display on but not after it goes dark. Amazon says certain tablets may not detect the wake word in the screen-off, unplugged state. The public support material does not publish a complete per-model matrix showing which devices continue listening in that condition.
Connect the tablet to power and repeat the test before concluding that hands-free Alexa is unavailable. If it responds only while charging, that behavior is consistent with Amazon’s qualification.
Hands-Free Mode is off
Alexa can remain installed while hands-free listening is disabled. Check both Settings > Alexa and the Quick Actions panel. A tablet can also lose a toggle after a reset, profile change or software update, so recheck the setting if it previously worked.
The tablet is not a supported generation
Product names can be misleading because several generations share “Fire HD 8” or “Fire HD 10” branding. Identify the generation in the tablet’s device information or original purchase details, then compare it with Amazon’s compatibility list. Do not infer support from screen size alone.

The request requires authentication
A tablet locked with a passcode can respond to the wake word for some Alexa features, but other actions require the passcode. Requests involving personal information, purchases, account changes or protected device controls may therefore appear to fail even though Alexa heard you. Amazon says a Trusted Network can reduce some passcode prompts, but it does not remove every security requirement.
The microphone is blocked or privacy controls changed
Check that the tablet’s microphone is not physically covered and that no system control has disabled Alexa’s access. If you do not want the tablet listening for the wake word, turn off Hands-Free Mode in the Alexa settings or use its Quick Actions toggle. Disabling the feature prevents hands-free wake detection; it does not uninstall Alexa.
Show Mode: a different way to use Alexa
Show Mode turns a compatible Fire tablet into a full-screen Alexa experience. It is not simply a brightness or lock-screen option, and support for hands-free Alexa does not imply Show Mode support.
Show Mode compatibility and software requirements
| Tablet | Show Mode support listed by Amazon |
|---|---|
| Fire HD 8, 7th generation | Software 5.6.1.0 or later |
| Fire HD 8, 8th generation | Software 6.3.0.1 or later |
| Fire HD 8, 10th generation | Software 7.3.1.4 or later |
| Fire HD 10, 7th generation | Software 5.5.0.0 or later |
| Fire HD 10, 9th generation | Software 7.3.1.1 or later |
| Fire HD 10, 11th generation | Software 7.3.1.8 or later |
| Fire 7, 7th, 9th and 12th generations | Incompatible |
| Fire HD 8, 12th generation | Incompatible |
| Fire Max 11, 13th generation | Incompatible |
| Fire HD 10, 13th generation | Incompatible |
The table shows why checking the generation matters. For example, a Fire HD 8 generation that supports hands-free Alexa may still be excluded from Show Mode, while an older generation may require a particular Fire OS version.
How to enter and leave Show Mode
- Swipe down to open Quick Actions and select the Show Mode toggle, if available.
- Alternatively, say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.”
- To leave, turn Show Mode off from Quick Actions or ask Alexa to exit.
In Show Mode, Amazon says the display can turn on after detecting the wake word or motion in view of the camera. Touching the screen or pressing buttons can also wake the display. A passcode may still be required to exit Show Mode.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the generation. Confirm the full model name and generation rather than relying on “Fire tablet” or screen size.
- Check Alexa settings. Go to Settings > Alexa and enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode.
- Check Quick Actions. Swipe down and make sure the Alexa Hands-Free and, where supported, Show Mode controls are on.
- Test with the screen awake. Use a basic, non-personal command. If there is no response, solve the general Alexa or microphone problem first.
- Test with the screen off while charging. This is the most dependable screen-off test under Amazon’s guidance.
- Test unplugged. If it fails only when unplugged, treat that as a device or power-state limitation rather than evidence that the feature is misconfigured.
- Check the lock state. Try a command that does not need personal data. Be prepared to enter the passcode for protected actions.
- Update the tablet. Show Mode has generation-specific minimum software versions. Install available Fire OS updates, then verify the settings again.
- Inspect privacy and hardware controls. Remove anything covering the microphone and confirm that Hands-Free Mode has not been disabled.
- Use Show Mode only if listed. If the Show Mode toggle is missing, compare your exact generation with Amazon’s compatibility list rather than trying to force the feature.
Privacy and security when Alexa is enabled
Amazon says wake-word spotting happens locally on the tablet. Once the wake word is detected, audio is sent to Amazon’s cloud, and the transmitted clip includes a small amount of audio from immediately before the wake word. The blue line on the display indicates that streaming is taking place when the screen is visible.
That behavior is different from an always-on cloud microphone: the device performs the initial wake-word check locally, then streams after detection. If you do not want hands-free listening, disable Hands-Free Mode from Settings > Alexa or Quick Actions. You can still open and use Alexa manually after turning the wake-word feature off.

A passcode remains the security boundary for some operations. A Trusted Network may reduce prompts in familiar network conditions, but it is not a universal bypass, and Amazon specifically notes that a passcode may be needed to leave Show Mode.
Does a charging dock matter?
Amazon lists a Show Mode Charging Dock for certain older tablets: the 7th-generation Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10, and the 8th-generation Fire HD 8. With the relevant setting enabled, the dock charges the tablet and can automatically switch it to Show Mode.
The dock is not required for Alexa Hands-Free Mode, and Amazon’s information does not establish that a dock guarantees wake-word detection while the screen is off and the tablet is unplugged. Its practical benefit is keeping compatible tablets powered and ready for a Show Mode-style countertop setup.
What you can conclude about your own tablet
If Alexa responds with the display on and while charging with the display off, Hands-Free Mode is functioning. Failure only in the unplugged, screen-off test falls within the behavior Amazon warns about, and the company does not publish enough detail to label every model definitively.
If Alexa never responds, verify the generation, enable both Alexa and Hands-Free Mode, check the microphone and privacy controls, and test a simple command before investigating passcodes or Show Mode. If the tablet responds to the wake word but cannot complete a particular action, unlock it or use a command that does not require protected account access.
Compatibility pages and Fire OS requirements can change. When setting up a specific tablet, use its current generation and software information rather than relying on an older model name or a general claim that all Fire tablets support screen-off Alexa.
