Can AI Tell Your Politics From Your Face? What Michal Kosinski’s Study Found

AI can classify political orientation from face images better than chance in a particular research setup—but that does not mean it can reliably read any person’s beliefs from a photo. A 2021 study by Stanford psychologist Michal Kosinski reported correct classification in 72% of liberal–conservative face pairs. The result is about performance on the study’s labeled image data, not a universal test of what someone believes.

What did Michal Kosinski’s study actually find?

In a peer-reviewed paper published in Scientific Reports on January 11, 2021, Kosinski applied a facial-recognition algorithm to 1,085,795 naturalistic images and assessed whether it could distinguish faces associated with liberal and conservative political orientations. The paper reported that political orientation was correctly classified in 72% of liberal–conservative face pairs.

The study also compared that result with several reference points. These figures describe the paper’s evaluation, not a guarantee about the accuracy of a system used on a new person or an arbitrary photograph.

Measure Figure reported in the 2021 paper How to interpret it
Algorithm classification 72% of liberal–conservative face pairs The study’s reported pairwise classification result.
Chance level 50% The paper’s baseline for a two-way comparison.
Human accuracy 55% The comparison reported by the paper; it is not a claim about every person or every setting.
100-item personality questionnaire 66% The paper’s comparison for a questionnaire-based measure.

The paper reported similar accuracy across datasets from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It also reported 69% accuracy after controlling for age, gender, and ethnicity. Those results remain tied to the datasets and evaluation used in the study.

Does 72% mean an AI knows your politics from a photo?

No. The 72% figure means the algorithm classified correctly in 72% of the study’s liberal–conservative face pairs. It is not an individual-level guarantee that a system can identify a person’s views from any image, nor does it mean the algorithm understands that person’s beliefs.

Pairwise classification is a statistical comparison against labeled groups. Results can depend on how the images were collected, how political labels were assigned, who appears in the dataset, and which visual cues the model can use. A score on a defined dataset does not by itself establish how a different system would perform on different people, images, or conditions.

The paper also notes that transient features or self-presentation may contribute to predictability. Appearance can carry social signals—including grooming or presentation—that correlate with group labels. That is different from showing that political ideology is biologically written into facial structure.

Can a photo reveal sexual orientation or intelligence?

The 2024 Futurism report described Kosinski as claiming that AI could infer intelligence, sexual orientation, and political leanings from face photographs. The clearest detailed result in the cited primary evidence is the 2021 political-orientation study described above. That study’s political classification result should not be treated as proof of a general ability to identify sexual orientation or intelligence from a face.

Earlier work on facial images and sexual orientation, including the controversial Wang–Kosinski paper, has drawn criticism over privacy, human rights, and the risks of turning sensitive traits into targets for automated classification. Data & Society’s 2018 case study documents that controversy. A model’s ability to find statistical patterns in a dataset is not proof that a sensitive trait has a reliable or innate facial signature.

Is AI face reading modern phrenology?

The comparison is a warning, not a description of what the 2021 study proved. Phrenology claimed that character could be read from the shape of the skull. Kosinski’s political-orientation study tested statistical classification using images and labels; it did not establish that a person’s face biologically determines their politics, intelligence, or sexual orientation.

The analogy is useful when it cautions against treating a model’s output as an objective reading of a person’s inner nature. It becomes misleading if it collapses a dataset-specific prediction into a claim that faces reveal an innate essence. Correlation can arise through social patterns, image selection, labels, and presentation, and the study does not establish which cues caused its result.

Why does face-based inference raise privacy concerns?

Political views and sexual orientation are sensitive personal information. If a system infers such traits without a person’s knowledge or consent, the output could be used to sort, target, exclude, or discriminate against people. Inaccurate classifications can also harm people who are assigned a label they do not hold.

In the 2021 paper, Kosinski wrote: “Given the widespread use of facial recognition, our findings have critical implications for the protection of privacy and civil liberties.” That concern applies even when a model produces probabilities rather than certain answers: a prediction can still affect someone if an institution treats it as fact.

Before relying on claims about any face-analysis system, useful questions include:

  • What attribute is the system trying to infer, and how were its labels defined?
  • What people and image conditions were represented in the evaluation data?
  • Was performance measured as pairwise classification or as individual prediction?
  • Were demographic and presentation-related factors considered?
  • What happens when the system is wrong, and can the affected person know, challenge, or correct the inference?
  • Was the image collected and used with meaningful consent, and who can access the resulting prediction?

What should readers take from the claim?

Kosinski’s 2021 paper reports a notable result: a facial-recognition algorithm classified liberal–conservative face pairs correctly 72% of the time in its study setting, compared with the paper’s 50% chance baseline, 55% human comparison, and 66% questionnaire comparison. That is evidence of predictive performance on defined data—not proof that a photograph universally reveals a person’s politics or that sensitive traits are biologically encoded in facial appearance.
