Can AI Prove Mathematical Theorems Reliably? Accuracy, Verification, and Limits

Sometimes—but only in a carefully defined sense. An AI can search for a proof and produce a formal proof object that a system such as Lean checks. That check is strong evidence that the proof follows from the exact formal statement, definitions, imported theorems, and axioms in scope. It does not show that the statement captures the problem a person intended, that no condition was accidentally omitted, or that a natural-language explanation accurately describes the result.

The most defensible view is therefore conditional: AI can be reliable about a theorem that has been correctly formalized and accepted by a trusted proof kernel. Current competition results and benchmark scores demonstrate impressive capability on selected tasks, not a universal reliability rate for mathematics.

Reliability has three separate stages

Claims about an “AI proof” often combine activities that have different failure modes. Separate them before judging accuracy.

1. Proof search

Proof search is the attempt to find a derivation for a formal goal. An AI may generate tactics, intermediate lemmas, or a complete proof term. Success depends on the problem, the model, the available mathematics library, the search strategy, and the computation allocated to the attempt. Failure to find a proof does not show that the theorem is false; it may show only that this system or search budget was insufficient.

2. Formal checking

Formal checking asks whether a proof assistant accepts the resulting proof object for the stated proposition. In Lean, a small kernel checks proof terms against the declarations and axioms available in the current environment. If the kernel accepts the term, the derivation is supported relative to that formal environment. This is materially stronger than a fluent explanation or an answer that merely resembles a textbook proof.

3. Statement and explanation adequacy

A checker does not decide whether the formal proposition expresses the original question. A translation can omit a hypothesis, change a quantifier, use the wrong definition, or encode a weaker claim while remaining perfectly checkable. The same issue applies to prose written after the proof: it may misstate what was actually proved. Human review is still required at the boundary between the natural-language problem and its formal encoding.

Stage What is being tested What a success establishes
Proof search Whether the system found a candidate derivation A candidate proof for the supplied formal goal, subject to later checking
Formal checking Whether the proof assistant’s kernel accepts the proof term The formal proposition follows from the environment’s declarations and axioms
Statement and explanation review Whether the encoding and description match the intended problem Confidence that the checked theorem is the theorem the reader meant

What a proof assistant actually guarantees

Lean’s narrow, strong guarantee

Lean 4.35.0 is an interactive theorem prover based on dependent type theory. Its core theory is implemented in a minimal kernel whose job is to check proof terms. Tactics and automation help a user or an AI construct those terms; the kernel performs the final acceptance check.

Lean’s documentation describes the boundary precisely: “The core type theory is implemented in a minimal kernel that does nothing other than check proof terms.” The Lean FAQ similarly explains: “This way, the soundness of Lean as a theorem prover does not depend on the correctness of the elaboration steps and tactics.” In practical terms, a tactic can be buggy without automatically making an accepted theorem false, because the generated proof object still has to pass the kernel.

The environment is part of the claim

Kernel acceptance is relative to the exact file and imports used. Definitions, previously proved theorems, type-class instances, and axioms in scope all affect what follows. A reproducible report should identify the Lean version, imported libraries, theorem statement, and any axioms rather than presenting a bare screenshot or a conversational transcript.

What the checker cannot know

  • Whether an AI translated every word of the original problem correctly.
  • Whether a side condition, domain restriction, or quantifier was dropped.
  • Whether a definition has the intended mathematical meaning in context.
  • Whether a later prose explanation overstates the checked result.
  • Whether the formalization uses an assumption that should have been proved instead.

For higher-risk work, Lean’s validation guidance describes replaying and comparing a proof against a trusted challenge file. That process strengthens confidence that the submitted artifact is the one being checked, but it still does not replace review of the theorem statement and its assumptions.

How to check an AI-generated proof

If an AI claims to have proved a theorem, use this sequence rather than trusting the narrative answer.

  1. Obtain the exact formal statement. Ask for the complete theorem declaration, including all variables, hypotheses, quantifiers, type annotations, and definitions. A paraphrase is not enough.
  2. Read the statement as mathematics. Check that the objects, domains, edge cases, and conclusion match the original question. Pay special attention to implications, “for all” versus “there exists,” equality conditions, and hidden assumptions.
  3. Inspect imports and axioms. Record the Lean version, imported modules, local declarations, and any explicit or inherited axioms. A theorem can be valid relative to an added axiom while answering a different question from one posed in ordinary mathematics.
  4. Replay the proof in the stated environment. Compile the file from a clean checkout or an equivalent reproducible setup. A pasted proof fragment without its declarations and imports cannot establish that the reported result is reproducible.
  5. Confirm kernel acceptance. The successful run should end with the proof term accepted by Lean, not merely with an AI saying that the argument is valid. Where the stakes justify it, use a trusted challenge-file or replay workflow.
  6. Compare the explanation with the theorem. Make sure every sentence in the human-readable account refers to something actually encoded and proved. If the explanation discusses an intuitive claim that is absent from the formal statement, treat that claim separately.

What the major recent demonstrations show

AlphaProof at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad

Google DeepMind reported that AlphaProof proved two algebra problems and one number theory problem from the 2024 IMO after formal statements were prepared in Lean. A Google Research publication summary described the system, with AlphaProof as its core reasoning engine and used alongside AlphaGeometry, as solving three of the five non-geometry problems, including the competition’s most difficult problem.

The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s 2026 AI Index described the combined AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 result as four of the six IMO problems. It also noted that experts translated the competition problems into Lean and that the process took days of computation. Those details matter: the result is evidence about a particular system-plus-formalization workflow, not a demonstration that an arbitrary conversational model can autonomously formalize and prove arbitrary theorems.

Formal mathematics benchmarks

The Nature paper on AlphaProof evaluates defined collections of formal problems, including corrected miniF2F, formal-imo, and Putnam benchmark material. These datasets are useful for measuring progress under specified conditions. They do not supply a universal pass rate for all mathematical statements, because the problems, formalizations, libraries, and evaluation protocols define what is being measured.

DeepSeek-Prover’s project page reports results on miniF2F and FIMO. Those numbers are specific to that model, those benchmarks, and the stated sampling protocol. A responsible citation names the benchmark and setup instead of presenting the score as “AI theorem-proving accuracy” in general.

Why benchmark scores do not become a universal reliability statistic

Two systems can receive different scores without one being generally more reliable, because the experiments may differ in ways that change the task.

  • Problem set and version: miniF2F, formal-imo, FIMO, and Putnam collections are not interchangeable, and corrections or version changes can alter difficulty.
  • Target output: Some systems generate a natural-language answer; others must emit a machine-checkable formal proof. These are different tasks.
  • Formalization source: A theorem statement may be supplied in advance, translated by experts, or generated by the model. Expert translation removes one major source of error but also means the model is not being tested on the entire problem-to-proof pipeline.
  • Library and checker: Results depend on the proof assistant, imported mathematics, definitions, and automation available during the run.
  • Search and compute budget: Number of attempts, sampling strategy, inference-time search, and elapsed computation can materially affect the success rate.
  • Reproducibility: A score is more informative when the exact model, code, benchmark version, environment, and evaluation protocol are available for independent replay.

For these reasons, do not combine scores from unrelated papers into a single leaderboard or extrapolate a competition result to every area of mathematics. No cited source establishes one cross-domain statistic covering all systems, theorem types, formalization pipelines, and compute budgets.

A fair framework for comparing theorem-proving systems

When two or more AI theorem provers are compared, require the same reporting fields:

Comparison axis Question to ask
Benchmark Are both systems evaluated on the same dataset and version?
Output Is the target a prose answer, an informal derivation, or a kernel-checked proof?
Formalization Who produced the formal statement: experts, the model, or both?
Verification Which proof assistant, kernel, library, and imported axioms were used?
Search budget How many samples or attempts were allowed, and how much computation was used?
Reproducibility Can another researcher replay the exact environment and obtain the same result?

Common ways an apparent proof can fail

The prose is persuasive but no proof object exists

An AI can produce a polished argument containing a subtle gap. Unless a formal proof term is accepted by a checker, the result remains an unverified explanation. The appropriate remedy is to formalize the claim or have a mathematician check every inference independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The wrong theorem was formalized

This is the most important failure that kernel checking cannot detect. A missing hypothesis or altered quantifier may make a statement easier than the intended problem. Return to the original wording, write the formal statement in plain language, and have a subject-matter expert approve the translation.

The environment silently changes the result

Different imports, library versions, local axioms, or definitions can change what Lean accepts. Preserve the complete source file and environment metadata, then replay from a clean setup.

The search simply ran out of resources

Failure at one time limit is not a disproof. Try a larger search budget, a stronger library of lemmas, decomposition into intermediate goals, or a different prover. Report the budget alongside the outcome.

When is an AI proof reliable enough to use?

For routine, low-stakes work, a kernel-checked proof of a correctly stated theorem can provide strong assurance. For new research, safety-critical mathematics, or results that will guide consequential decisions, require both layers of review: machine checking of the formal derivation and human checking of the statement, assumptions, definitions, and interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical verdict is therefore conditional rather than absolute: AI is becoming capable of producing formally verified mathematics, but reliability belongs to the complete pipeline—problem selection, translation, proof search, kernel checking, environment, and human interpretation—not to the model’s fluent output alone.
