Fast Company reported on September 29, 2026, that TikTok creator Carlie Bond photographed her three school-age children against a plain backdrop, then asked ChatGPT, “Keep them exactly the same but make it look like a school picture.” The tool added a standard gradient background. Bond captioned the post, “So we took our own and let my good friend Chat help us out.” This is a reported example, not evidence of how common the practice is or how well it works for families generally. Some commenters on the post said AI changed the children’s appearance despite the instruction to keep them the same. Those comments are anecdotal, not a controlled evaluation of image-editing accuracy. There is no single established school-photo price in the cited reporting. Fast Company relayed Capturely’s 2026 estimate that families spend an average of $25–$60 on a print package, with photos of one child ranging from $15 to $125. After editing, check the child’s face, hair, clothing, and other identifying details for unintended changes. Keep the original photo, and do not assume that asking an AI tool to preserve a person guarantees it will do so. The sources do not establish a standard prompt, output quality, or reliable method for producing a faithful portrait.
Uploading a child’s photo to ChatGPT
OpenAI’s data-controls guidance says users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” New conversations made after that setting is off are not used to train models, though they can remain in chat history. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Those controls are not a promise that no person or system can ever process an upload, and Temporary Chat should not be treated as immediate deletion. Separately, Human Rights Watch reported that Australia’s eSafety Commissioner received more than 100 reports between January and March 2026 about anonymous accounts misusing images taken from official school websites and social accounts; some material involved AI-generated sexualized deepfakes, face swaps, or other manipulation. It does not show that a parent’s private upload for portrait editing has the same exposure or outcome, but it is a reason to be thoughtful about sharing identifiable images of children. A new home photo is not the same as removing a watermark
Fast Company also reported on people uploading a school photographer’s proof and asking AI to remove its watermark. That is different from creating a new portrait with a photo taken at home. Do not treat watermark removal as a harmless shortcut: check the photographer’s purchase and usage terms or ask the rights holder about a specific proof.
