Can AI-generated code be trusted? A practical FAQ for developers

AI-generated code should be treated as an untrusted draft, not as a component you can approve on sight. It may be correct and useful, but it can also misunderstand requirements, introduce vulnerabilities, choose an unsuitable dependency, or encode an assumption nobody intended. Trust comes from verification: compare the change with the requirement and architecture, run meaningful tests, inspect dependencies and security controls, and obtain human review proportionate to the consequences of failure.

That rule applies whether the code came from a chat assistant, an editor completion, or an agent that can edit files and run commands. The more authority the tool has, the more carefully you must control its permissions, context and proposed actions.

Can AI-generated code be trusted?

Not by default. “Trust” is not a property of the output simply because it compiles, looks idiomatic or was produced by a well-known model. It is a conclusion you reach after checking that the code does what the requirement says, fits the surrounding system, handles failure safely and does not create unacceptable security or maintenance risk.

GitHub’s responsible-use guidance for Copilot Chat says: “You should always review and test the code generated by Copilot Chat to ensure that it meets your requirements and is free of errors or security concerns.” That is product guidance, not proof that every AI assistant behaves the same way, but it captures the right operating rule. AI output can appear valid while being syntactically wrong, semantically wrong, inconsistent with your intent or vulnerable. See GitHub’s responsible-use guidance and its code-review guidance.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A useful mental model is “junior contributor with unknown training data and no accountability.” Give that contributor a precise task, inspect the complete change, run independent checks and do not grant production access merely because the first patch looks polished.

Is AI-generated code safe?

It can be safe after appropriate verification, but safety is conditional on the task, model, context, codebase and controls around it. Common failure modes include:

  • Wrong interpretation: The implementation satisfies a plausible interpretation rather than the acceptance criteria, API contract or business rule you actually need.
  • Boundary mistakes: Authentication, authorization, tenant isolation, input validation, rate limits and error handling are incomplete or applied in the wrong layer.
  • Insecure defaults: Secrets appear in logs, encryption is misused, untrusted data reaches a query or command, or a debug setting survives into deployment.
  • Silent data loss: A migration, retry loop or serialization change works on the happy path but corrupts records or drops events under failure.
  • Maintenance mismatch: The code ignores project conventions, duplicates existing utilities, uses an unsupported language feature or adds an abandoned package.
  • Confident explanations: The accompanying comments or narrative can sound authoritative while describing behavior the code does not provide.

None of these outcomes is inevitable, and none can be ruled out by the model’s reputation. Review the artifact and its effects, not the confidence of the explanation.

How do you verify AI-generated code?

Use a layered process. Each layer catches different classes of error; no single test or scanner is a safety certificate.

  1. State the intended behavior. Write down the issue, acceptance criteria, API contract, invariants and non-functional requirements before judging the patch. Ask the requirement owner to resolve assumptions the model made. If the task is “validate an account,” specify which fields, error responses, authorization rules and audit events are required.
  2. Read the whole change in context. Inspect surrounding functions, callers, configuration, error paths, logging and data flows. Check edge cases such as empty input, duplicate requests, timeouts, partial failure, concurrency and rollback. A small diff can alter a shared helper or permission boundary.
  3. Run normal project checks. Compile or type-check, run the existing unit and integration suites, inspect warnings and exercise the changed path manually where useful. Add tests for important behavior and edge cases that the current suite does not cover. A green result only tells you that the tests you ran passed.
  4. Perform security checks. Use static analysis, secret scanning and suitable dependency or web-application scanners. Trace untrusted input to database queries, templates, file paths, shell commands and network requests. Verify authentication and authorization decisions, cryptographic use, error disclosure and secure configuration.
  5. Audit dependencies. Confirm every suggested package exists under the claimed name, comes from the intended registry or repository, is maintained and is licensed for your project. Review its version, transitive dependencies and required permissions before installation.
  6. Obtain independent review. Have a qualified teammate review complex or sensitive changes. For security-critical code, the person or process that validates the patch should not be the same agent that generated both implementation and only test suite.

These practices align with the verification techniques in NISTIR 8397, Guidelines on Minimum Standards for Developer Verification of Software (published October 6, 2021). NIST presents techniques such as threat modeling, automated and structural tests, static scanning, secret checks, fuzzing, historical tests and web-application scanners as a menu, not a guarantee that defects are absent.

Are passing tests enough to trust AI-generated code?

No. Tests are evidence about the scenarios they exercise, not proof that the implementation is correct or secure. A generated test suite may repeat the implementation’s mistaken assumptions, omit abuse cases and assert only that the code returns the value it was written to return. OWASP explicitly warns against treating AI-generated tests or pass rates as security evidence.

Evaluate tests against the requirement rather than against the implementation. For a permission check, include an allowed user, a denied user, a different tenant, an expired credential and malformed input. For a parser, include boundary sizes, invalid encodings and resource-exhaustion cases. Add regression tests from historical incidents and use fuzzing or property-based tests where input space is large. Keep tests independent enough that an implementation change can actually fail them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can AI-generated code contain security vulnerabilities?

Yes. Vulnerabilities can arise in ordinary functions as well as in code explicitly described as “secure.” Increase scrutiny when a patch touches any of the following:

Area Questions to answer Useful independent checks
Authentication and authorization Can an unauthenticated, cross-tenant or lower-privilege caller reach the operation? Are decisions enforced server-side? Negative tests, threat model, authorization review and logs that do not expose credentials.
Untrusted input Is input validated for type, size, encoding and allowed values before it reaches a sink? Boundary tests, fuzzing, static analysis and targeted injection tests.
Cryptography Are approved algorithms, key storage, nonce handling, rotation and verification rules used correctly? Security specialist review and library documentation checks; do not rely on comments.
Secrets and personal data Could credentials or sensitive fields enter source, logs, prompts, telemetry or error messages? Secret scanning, data-flow review, redaction tests and least-privilege access.
Infrastructure and CI/CD Does the change alter deployment identity, network exposure, build scripts or release gates? Configuration review, dry runs, policy checks and an approved rollback.

Automated scanning is valuable but incomplete. Combine it with requirements-based tests and human review that understands the system’s threat model.

What should you check before accepting an AI-suggested dependency?

Dependency hallucinations and stale recommendations are practical risks. An assistant may suggest a package whose name is wrong, whose registry account is unrelated, or whose maintenance and security history do not fit your project. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet advises verifying package existence and provenance instead of blindly installing suggestions.

  • Search the official package registry and project repository; confirm the package identity and publisher.
  • Check release recency, supported runtime versions, known advisories, transitive dependencies and license compatibility.
  • Prefer an existing, approved internal or standard-library capability when it meets the requirement.
  • Pin versions according to your dependency policy and review lockfile changes.
  • Run the package in a constrained environment before it receives production credentials or network access.

How do agent permissions change the risk?

A chat completion that returns text cannot change your repository by itself. An agent with shell, network, package-installation, pull-request or secret access can create effects while following a flawed instruction or hostile content. Repository issues, pull-request text, documentation, fetched pages, tool output and persistent instruction files can all influence an agent’s behavior; treat them as untrusted input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use least privilege: grant only the files, commands and credentials needed for the task; isolate execution; require approval before installing packages, changing CI/CD, deleting data or deploying; and review the exact commands and diff. Never place production secrets or unnecessary personal or proprietary data in prompts. Keep an audit trail of tool calls and approvals. OWASP’s guidance describes these as agent attack surfaces, not as proof that every product has identical exposure.

When should review be stricter?

Match review effort to the impact and reversibility of failure.

Change profile Minimum sensible control Escalate when
Documentation, formatting or isolated UI copy Author review, linting and a focused test or preview. The change affects generated output, localization or accessibility behavior.
Ordinary business logic Requirement comparison, full test suite, edge-case tests and peer review. Data integrity, concurrency or backward compatibility is involved.
Authentication, authorization, payments or personal data Independent security-focused review, threat modeling, negative tests, scanning and monitored rollout. Failure could expose accounts, money or regulated data.
Cryptography, infrastructure, CI/CD or production automation Specialist review, restricted permissions, staged deployment and tested rollback. The agent can access secrets, production systems or broad network resources.

“Small diff” is not a risk category. A one-line policy or configuration change can have a larger blast radius than hundreds of lines in an isolated utility.

What do current standards say about AI-assisted development?

NIST published SP 800-218A on July 26, 2024. It adds AI-specific practices to the Secure Software Development Framework and says the profile should be used with SP 800-218, rather than as a product certification or a checklist that certifies snippets from an assistant. Organizations building or acquiring AI systems can use it to extend their software-development controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NISTIR 8397 remains useful as a baseline for developer verification, while its authors note that it does not cover the totality of software verification. For AI-assisted work, combine its techniques with controls for model context, dependency provenance, agent permissions and prompt-injection exposure.

What do the survey numbers actually prove?

GitHub’s 2024 U.S. developer survey reported that 92% of respondents used AI coding tools to generate test cases at least some of the time, and 99% expected those tools to improve security. Both figures are self-reported practices or expectations, not measured defect rates, vulnerability rates or evidence that generated code is safe. No universal percentage can establish the trustworthiness of AI-generated code across projects.

Vendor evaluations of coding agents may report resolution rate, token efficiency, latency, tool reliability and safety categories. Those disclosures can help compare a specific workflow, but they do not establish that the resulting code is secure in your codebase. Run representative tasks with the same review standard when comparing tools.

How should you compare coding assistants or agent setups?

Use a repeatable evaluation on your own representative tasks and codebase. Score each option on:

  • Correctness against explicit requirements and acceptance tests.
  • Security findings, missed issues and quality of remediation.
  • Dependency choices, version discipline and license fit.
  • Language, framework and architecture compatibility.
  • Data handling, context retention and controls for sensitive material.
  • Permission boundaries, approval steps and the ability to disable risky tools.
  • Auditability of prompts, tool calls, diffs and review decisions.
  • Human effort required to understand and verify the output.

Do not compare one assistant’s unreviewed demo with another’s production-reviewed patch. Keep task difficulty, environment and acceptance criteria constant, and record failures as well as successes.

A practical pre-merge checklist

  • The requirement, assumptions and acceptance criteria are written down and confirmed.
  • The complete diff and surrounding code have been read by a human.
  • Compilation, type checks, linting and relevant existing tests pass without unexplained warnings.
  • New tests cover edge cases, abuse cases and failure handling that matter to the feature.
  • Input validation, authorization, secrets, cryptography, logging and error disclosure were inspected.
  • Dependencies are real, appropriate, maintained, licensed and pinned according to policy.
  • Static analysis, secret scanning and other suitable security checks have run.
  • Review independence matches the impact; security-critical changes have qualified independent review.
  • Agent permissions were limited, commands and tool responses were reviewed, and no unnecessary secrets entered the context.
  • Deployment is staged where practical, with monitoring and a tested rollback path.

If you cannot explain why the code is correct, safe and maintainable in your system, it is not ready to be trusted—regardless of who or what generated it.
