Can AI Clear a Viva or Job Interview on Your Behalf? What the Evidence Shows

No cited evidence shows that an AI can reliably take a viva or job interview as a candidate and secure a pass or job offer. The AI interview systems documented here serve different purposes: one helps researchers interview study participants, while another lets employers interview and score applicants. AI may help with preparation where the rules allow it, but answering or appearing in your place is a different matter—and may violate the rules that apply to your assessment or application.

What “AI interviewer” means in the documented examples

The phrase can describe systems used by different people for different purposes. It does not, by itself, mean a tool that impersonates a candidate.

System and operator What it does Who evaluates the result
Anthropic Interviewer, used by researchers Helps plan interview studies, conducts real-time conversations with adaptive follow-up questions, and synthesizes participant responses for researcher validation and interpretation. Researchers validate and interpret the findings.
Greenhouse Voice AI, used by employers An optional hiring feature that presents recruiter-configured questions, records audio and video responses, transcribes them, and compares transcripts with recruiter-set criteria to recommend a score. Recruiters or hiring managers can accept, change, or disregard the score; the hiring decision remains with them.

Neither example establishes that an AI takes the candidate’s place. Anthropic reported that almost 81,000 people across 159 countries and 70 languages took part in a global research pilot; those figures describe research participation, not pass rates, job offers, or viva results. The reviewed sources provide no attributable statistic showing that an AI can pass an assessment or secure a job by interviewing on a candidate’s behalf.

Can AI help you prepare for a job interview?

Preparation is distinct from having software answer in your place. Where an employer’s rules permit it, a candidate can use AI to rehearse likely questions, organize examples from their own experience, or practice explaining a project. These are preparation ideas, not a guarantee of interview success, and the cited sources do not establish a particular candidate-preparation product as best.

  • Use practice answers to clarify your own reasoning and experience, rather than memorizing claims you cannot support.
  • Check the employer’s instructions before using AI during a live interview, and ask whether assistance or disclosure is allowed if the rules are unclear.
  • Do not assume an employer-side AI interview tool is available for candidate use: Greenhouse’s documented workflow is configured and operated by the hiring organization.

Can you use AI in a viva?

A viva is an oral assessment of the candidate’s knowledge and work, not simply a conversation to be completed by whoever can supply fluent answers. The University of East London’s 2025–26 regulations define a viva voce as “a meeting held to assess a student’s subject knowledge and to gain a clearer understanding of how they completed a particular piece of work.” That definition is specific to UEL, but it illustrates why a candidate may need to explain their choices and demonstrate ownership.

Rules differ by institution and assessment. UEL’s 2025–26 regulations list unauthorized information during a viva, impersonation or knowingly being impersonated, and unauthorized generative-AI answers among examples of academic misconduct. These are UEL examples, not a universal rule for every university.

Examples of institution-specific rules

  • University of York: Its research-degree policy says, “PGRs are expected to work with the examiners to ensure the integrity of oral examinations.” For online exams, it gives generative AI and earpieces as examples of unfair means a candidate may be asked to show they are not using. The policy says integrity concerns may lead to proceedings being stopped and a misconduct procedure being initiated.
  • University College Cork: Its 2025–26 examination policy says unauthorized, unacknowledged generative-AI use can breach academic integrity and describes oral examination as a way to investigate authenticity and understanding. It also says AI-detection software is not sanctioned for detecting or investigating alleged misconduct.
  • Fordham University: Its academic-integrity standards identify using a proxy to take an examination, test, or quiz as a violation and describe possible sanctions ranging from a grade reduction to expulsion. Those sanctions are Fordham’s, not a standard that can be assumed elsewhere.

For your own viva, check the current rules for your degree, department, and examination, including any instructions for remote exams. Ask your supervisor or examination office how permitted AI use should be disclosed. Do not infer permission from a tool’s availability or from another institution’s policy.

Why “clearing it on your behalf” is different from preparation

Using a tool to rehearse is not the same as letting it answer, participate, or impersonate you in an assessment. In a viva, that can defeat an assessment designed to examine your understanding and ownership. In a job interview, a tool that speaks as though it were you would likewise be acting as a proxy; the employer’s rules determine what assistance is permitted. The sources cited here do not establish that such substitution works or leads to a successful outcome.

Before using any tool in a live interview or examination, identify who operates it, whether it records or scores your answers, who makes the decision, and what the relevant institution or employer permits. If you cannot find clear written rules, ask the responsible office or hiring contact before the interview.
