Yes, but only through defined, permissioned paths. On Android, Gemini can perform selected device actions, launch apps, and use supported connected apps. Developers can expose particular app functions to assistants. A newer UI-automation framework can tap and type through a limited set of apps on selected devices, but it is a preview—not blanket control of every app on your phone.
What “control” means on Android
People use “control an app” to describe several different capabilities. Asking an assistant to open a calendar is not the same as creating an event inside that calendar. Calling an app-defined function is different again from reproducing a person’s taps on the screen.

The practical answer to “Can Gemini tap through any Android app?” is therefore no. The assistant may launch an app without being able to complete a workflow inside it, while a supported integration may complete a specific task without general screen access.

Device assistance
Google’s Gemini mobile app for Android includes a Device assistance connected app. When the relevant capability is available, Gemini can open installed apps, manage alarms and timers, control media, take a photo or screenshot, and perform certain supported device-setting actions. It can also read or reply to Android notifications when notification access is enabled.

These are exposed, user-facing actions rather than unrestricted access to the operating system. The available commands depend on the phone, Android release, Gemini rollout and the exact action Google supports.
Connected apps
Gemini Connected Apps let supported services provide specific operations. Google gives examples such as creating calendar events, searching productivity services, playing media, searching supported gallery apps, and making calls or sending messages through supported defaults. Gemini may ask you to connect an app or approve an on-screen prompt before the first use.
Connecting an app is not equivalent to handing over the app’s entire interface or data. The integration may expose one search operation but not editing, export or account-management screens. The app itself, the assistant and your account or regional rollout all affect what appears.

Notification access
Gemini needs Android notification access to read notifications and send replies on your behalf. Without that access, it cannot retrieve notification text for those actions. You can review or revoke notification access in Android’s system settings; the exact menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android version.
Default digital assistant
Some quick device actions require the Google app—the host for Gemini’s Android assistant capabilities—to be selected as the phone’s default digital assistant. Gemini can still perform other supported tasks when it is not the default, but commands that depend on the system-assistant role may fail or be unavailable.

Connected-app consent
App integrations can require you to connect the service, sign in, select an account or approve a permission prompt. Review the requested scope before accepting it. Google says you can inspect connected apps, disconnect an integration and follow each app’s on-screen instructions. Disconnecting removes that integration path; it does not uninstall the app.
Computer Control permission
Android Computer Control is a separate, privileged framework. An eligible assistant must hold ACCESS_COMPUTER_CONTROL, and the first interaction triggers a system permission dialog. Approval lets the assistant operate target apps in a secure background virtual display using screen content, taps, swipes and text input.

The operating system presents a consent step, limits which assistants can request the privilege, and supports handing control back to the user, including for a transaction confirmation.
Actions Gemini cannot perform
Google documents several security boundaries for Gemini device actions. Gemini cannot:
- Change an app’s permission settings or grant camera, microphone or location access.
- Change accessibility settings to give itself or other software new automation privileges.
- Change the device PIN or password.
- Factory-reset the phone.
- Read saved passwords.
Those limits matter because an assistant that could grant its own sensitive permissions would be able to bypass the consent model protecting Android users. Do not treat accessibility access as a recommended workaround for unsupported Gemini commands.

How developer integrations expose app capabilities
App Actions: destinations and intents
App Actions are Google Assistant integrations in which a developer declares capabilities in shortcuts.xml. A built-in intent can map a spoken request to an app screen, deep link or supported widget. Assistant parses the request, extracts parameters and sends them to the declared destination.

The developer documentation describes App Actions support for Android phones from Android 5/API 21 onward, excluding Android Go. Treat that as documentation scope, not a guarantee that every current device or assistant rollout will show every action.
AppFunctions: structured functions for agents
AppFunctions is Android’s newer, structured mechanism for exposing app-declared functions to authorized agents and assistants. The current Android documentation labels the API experimental and subject to change, and says it is available on Android 16 or higher.
A caller must hold the EXECUTE_APP_FUNCTIONS permission to discover and execute these functions. Android’s documentation explicitly says callers can include agents, apps and AI assistants such as Gemini. As of May 2026, Gemini access was described as a private preview for trusted testers, so ordinary users should not assume that an Android 16 phone automatically has it.

AppFunctions is primarily an integration and discoverability path. An app might expose “find my next appointment” or “add an item to a list” as a structured function while keeping payment, account-security and other operations unavailable to assistants.
UI automation: what Android Computer Control adds
Computer Control is the closest current Android path to an assistant operating an app like a person, but it remains tightly constrained. The framework allows an OEM-preloaded assistant to launch and interact with selected target apps in a controlled environment. The assistant can use visible screen content, taps, swipes and text input; a session can run up to six target apps sequentially, and Android permits only one active session at a time.
Target-app support is limited and may expand. The assistant can hand control to you, which is important when a workflow reaches a confirmation, payment or other sensitive point.
Early Gemini rollout details
In an Android developer announcement dated February 25, 2026, Google described an early Gemini UI-automation preview for selected Galaxy S26 and select Pixel 10 devices. The beta initially covered a curated set of food-delivery, grocery and rideshare apps in the United States and South Korea. Users could monitor progress and take over manually, and Gemini was designed to warn before sensitive actions such as a purchase.
Those are dated rollout details, not a permanent compatibility promise. A phone model, country, account, Android build and app version can all affect eligibility, and the supported list can change as the preview develops.

How to check what your phone actually supports
- Open Gemini on Android. Check its Connected Apps or integrations area for Device assistance and listed services.
- Review each app’s scope. Read the actions shown before connecting an app; the presence of an app in the list does not mean every feature is available.
- Check notification access. If you want notification reading or replies, enable Gemini’s notification access in Android settings, then return to Gemini and test with a non-sensitive message.
- Check the default assistant. If a device command is unavailable, verify whether the Google app is selected as the default digital assistant under your phone’s assistant settings.
- Test the smallest useful command. Start with “open [app]” or a clearly supported action. Opening proves launch capability only; it does not prove that Gemini can complete an in-app workflow.
- Look for explicit Computer Control consent. A supported preview should identify the system permission and target-app scope. If no such prompt or supported-app listing exists, do not assume general UI automation is enabled.
- Disconnect when finished. Remove an integration from Connected Apps if you no longer want that assistant path available.
Why an apparently simple command can fail
The app is not integrated
An assistant may know how to launch an app but have no declared action or function for the requested task. Try the app’s documented integration, not a more forceful wording of the same request.
The required permission is missing
Notification replies fail without notification access. Certain quick settings actions fail when the Google app is not the default assistant. A connected-app task can fail when the account is disconnected or a consent prompt was declined.
The feature is not available on your device or in your region
Android version, handset or OEM, assistant app, account, app support and country rollout all matter. Preview announcements are especially narrow; availability on one Pixel or Galaxy model does not establish availability on another Android phone.
The requested operation is protected
Changing permissions, granting sensor access, altering accessibility, changing credentials or factory-resetting the phone falls outside Gemini’s documented device actions. No prompt wording can legitimately remove those safeguards.
The workflow exceeds the integration’s scope
A calendar integration may create an event but not manage every calendar setting. A UI-automation preview may support a listed rideshare app but stop at a confirmation that requires your input. Treat each failure as a boundary of the exposed capability, not proof that Android assistants cannot do anything useful.
A practical way to evaluate any Android assistant
Before enabling a feature, ask five questions:
- Mechanism: Is this a built-in device action, connected app, App Action, AppFunction or UI automation?
- Availability: Which Android version, phone model, assistant, app, account and country are supported?
- Permission: Does it need default-assistant status, notification access, app consent, a privileged system permission or a one-time dialog?
- Scope: Is the assistant invoking one function, opening one destination, changing a defined setting or operating a selected screen workflow?
- User control: Can you see progress, disconnect the integration, approve a sensitive step or take over manually?
This checklist prevents the most common misunderstanding: treating a capability exposed through one supported path as evidence that the assistant can control every installed app.
