Yes—Adam Fox has a credible path back into the Norris Trophy conversation, but his case depends on staying healthy and sustaining elite production. He won the award in 2020–21 and finished as a finalist in 2022–23; after an injury-interrupted 2025–26 season, his two assists in the Rangers’ 2026–27 home opener were an encouraging start, not evidence yet of a full-season rebound.
Why Fox belongs in the conversation
Fox has already shown that he can meet the standard voters recognize: the New York Rangers’ 2026–27 media guide records him as the 2020–21 Norris Trophy winner and a 2022–23 finalist. Those honors make another serious bid plausible, though they do not guarantee a place among this season’s finalists.
His completed 2025–26 regular-season line was 9 goals and 44 assists for 53 points in 55 games, according to NHL.com’s player statistics. That is strong offensive production in a limited number of appearances. The total alone, however, cannot establish his overall Norris case: the award discussion also turns on availability, defensive contribution, power-play role and team context.
Availability is the pivotal question
Fox’s 2025–26 season was interrupted by injuries. He returned from an upper-body injury on Dec. 31, 2025, then was placed on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury on Jan. 6, 2026. The Rangers’ media guide says he returned from injured reserve on Feb. 26 after missing 13 games from Jan. 8 through Feb. 5. That sequence makes durability—not whether Fox has the talent—the central uncertainty in projecting his award prospects.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan underscored his importance when Fox returned from the upper-body injury: “Obviously, when ‘Foxy’s’ in our lineup, he’s a difference-maker. He’s a very difficult guy to replace on so many levels.” Sullivan’s comments were reported by NHL.com on Dec. 31, 2025.
What the 2026–27 opening tells us—and what it does not
The NHL’s Sept. 29, 2026 season-opening roster listed Fox with the Rangers rather than in the injured or non-roster group. In the Rangers’ Oct. 2 home opener, a 5–1 win over Tampa Bay, he recorded two assists, according to the team’s postgame notes. That is a positive early sign of his presence and contribution.

One game cannot show whether he will stay available or sustain high-end production across the season. The early evidence supports watching his progress, not declaring a Norris return or estimating his odds.

- Games played: A sustained stretch in the lineup would address the biggest concern left by last season.
- Offensive output and power-play responsibility: His 53 points in 55 games provide a useful recent benchmark, but this season’s production must be assessed over a meaningful sample.
- Defensive contribution: Points are not a complete measure of a defenseman’s Norris case; the available figures here do not establish a current comparative assessment of Fox’s defense.
- Team context: How Fox’s role and the Rangers’ season unfold will shape how his individual performance is judged alongside other candidates.
As of the opening week of 2026–27, Fox has the résumé and offensive record to re-enter the discussion. Whether he can turn that possibility into a genuine candidacy depends most on health and sustained, well-rounded impact over the season.
