What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes. A zero-click prompt injection can cause an AI assistant to expose data without the victim clicking a link or opening a page when the assistant automatically reads attacker-controlled content and has access to private information, network requests, or other tools. The content might be an email, document, calendar item, web page, database record, image, or attachment.
The risk is not that every received email compromises an ordinary mailbox. The attack requires an AI system to ingest the content, interpret hidden instructions as commands, and possess a path to sensitive data or an external destination. Least-privilege permissions, tool restrictions, outbound-network controls, isolation, and approval gates can break that chain.

What “zero-click prompt injection” means
In a traditional phishing attack, a criminal generally needs a person to click a link, open an attachment, reply, or enter credentials. An indirect prompt injection changes the target: the attacker places instructions inside data that an AI assistant is expected to read. Microsoft describes this as an attacker hiding malicious instructions in content the AI will consume rather than addressing the model directly.
The hidden text can be white on a white background, rendered at zero size, positioned off-screen, placed inside a quoted message, encoded, or embedded in an attachment. It can also be contained in an image or another multimodal input if the assistant performs optical or visual analysis. The human reader may see an ordinary invoice, newsletter, support ticket, or meeting invitation while the model receives additional instruction-like text.

“Zero-click” describes the victim’s lack of a click or page open. It does not mean the assistant needs no input. The assistant must automatically process the malicious item, and the attack only becomes a data-theft incident if the system’s permissions and tools allow the injected instruction to reach something valuable.
How the attack chain works
- Attacker-controlled content enters a trusted workflow. An email arrives, a shared document is indexed, a web page is retrieved, or a database record is synchronized into an AI assistant’s context.
- The assistant parses hidden or misleading instructions. The model may treat text in that content as a task directive instead of untrusted data, especially when the instruction is formatted to resemble system guidance or an urgent workflow note.
- The injected instruction requests data or an action. It might tell the assistant to search connected mail, summarize confidential files, include secret values in a request, or forward information to an external service.
- Connected tools supply the capability. The assistant may have read access to mail, cloud storage, calendars, customer records, or internal search, plus tools for browsing, sending messages, or making HTTP requests.
- An output channel carries the information away. The model can place data in a message, a document, a tool argument, or a URL. A remote server can receive the value when the assistant or a rendering service makes a request.
OpenAI’s safety guidance describes a particularly important exfiltration route: an attacker can induce a model to request a URL that contains private data. If the system loads that URL, the attacker can read the value in server logs. An embedded image or preview can trigger the request, so the user may never see a browser window or consciously interact with the link.
A simplified example
An assistant is configured to “read incoming support mail and identify urgent cases.” A crafted message contains a visually hidden instruction telling the assistant to search recent mail for a customer export, append the contents to an image URL, and display that image in its summary. If the assistant can search mail and fetch remote images, the request itself may disclose the data. No employee has to click the message.
Recommended Free Tools
This example is intentionally simplified. Whether it succeeds depends on the model, the connector’s permissions, URL handling, content filters, and network policy. A model that cannot search private data, cannot make outbound requests, or must obtain approval before using either capability cannot complete the same chain.

Why receiving an email is not automatically a compromise
An ordinary mailbox that merely stores an email is not equivalent to an agentic system. A conventional mail client may display the message while never interpreting its text as an instruction, searching other data stores, or sending attacker-controlled requests. The zero-click concern arises when an AI assistant automatically processes the message and can act through connected systems.
Exposure therefore varies by deployment. An assistant that only classifies mail locally has a narrower attack surface than one that can search years of correspondence, read cloud files, browse the internet, and send messages. A read-only assistant is safer than one with write or send permissions, but read access can still be damaging if confidential information can be copied into an external request.
What the EchoLeak case demonstrates
The EchoLeak case study identifies CVE-2025-32711 as a zero-click prompt-injection vulnerability in Microsoft 365 Copilot. The reported attack used a single crafted email and required no user interaction. According to the case study, the chain combined classifier evasion, a link-redaction bypass, automatically fetched images, and a Microsoft Teams proxy to exfiltrate data remotely.
This is evidence of a production vulnerability in a specific system and configuration. It is not proof that every Microsoft 365 tenant, every Copilot deployment, or every AI assistant is currently exploitable in the same way. The important lesson is architectural: automatic ingestion, broad data access, and an outbound path can turn an apparently passive message into an active attack.

How likely is it?
There is no universal prevalence statistic showing how often zero-click prompt injection succeeds across all assistants. Published evidence is configuration-specific.
Anthropic reported a 1% attack-success rate in one internal adaptive “Best-of-N” browser-agent evaluation, using 100 attempts per environment. That figure is not a reliability rate for all models, products, or real-world email systems. It does show that a low percentage can still represent meaningful risk when an agent handles sensitive accounts at scale. Anthropic’s conclusion was that no browser agent is immune to prompt injection.
Success rates can rise or fall with the content source, model version, tool design, permission scope, filtering, network policy, and whether a human must approve consequential actions. A result from a browser-agent test should not be converted into a claim that 1% of all emails steal data.

| Control point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Content ingestion | Which emails, documents, web pages, records, images, and attachments are automatically parsed? | Every untrusted source added to context creates another place for hidden instructions to enter. |
| Data permissions | Can the assistant search private mail, files, calendars, customer records, or credentials? | An injection cannot steal data the agent cannot read. |
| Tool permissions | Can it send mail, edit or delete records, purchase items, execute code, or call APIs? | Write and action privileges turn a misleading instruction into an operational event. |
| Outbound network | Can the assistant fetch arbitrary URLs, load images, follow redirects, or send data to unknown hosts? | Network access provides a covert channel for exfiltration. |
| Human approval | Which actions require confirmation immediately before execution? | A well-placed approval gate can stop a high-impact step even when earlier filtering fails. |
| Isolation and provenance | Are external instructions clearly separated from trusted task instructions and labeled with their origin? | Delimiting and preserving provenance helps the model and surrounding software treat content as data rather than authority. |
| Monitoring | Are prompts, tool calls, network requests, and outputs logged and reviewed? | Detailed telemetry supports detection, investigation, and rapid revocation of access. |
Defenses that break the chain
Use least privilege and scoped identities
Give an assistant only the data and tools required for one defined job. A mail-triage agent may need message metadata and a small set of message bodies; it usually does not need unrestricted access to every mailbox, personnel file, or finance system. Use separate identities, narrowly scoped tokens, short-lived credentials, and read-only permissions where possible. Prevent one connector from silently inheriting the full authority of the user.

Treat every external item as untrusted data
Do not let text from an email, document, web page, or database record override the assistant’s governing instructions. Preserve provenance so the system knows whether a sentence came from a trusted administrator or an untrusted correspondent. Delimit retrieved content, label it as data, and use parsers or sanitizers that remove hidden markup when the workflow does not need it.
Filtering alone is not sufficient. OWASP notes that indirect prompt injections do not need to be human-visible or readable as long as the language model parses them. Controls must therefore address the model’s interpretation, not just what appears on screen.
Restrict URLs and network requests
Block arbitrary outbound requests from the model. Use an allowlist of exact destinations for approved integrations, validate schemes and hosts, disable unnecessary redirects, and prevent credentials or sensitive values from being placed in query strings and paths. Treat image loading, link previews, document rendering, and URL unfurling as network-capable actions rather than harmless display features.

Run browsing and document conversion in a sandbox with a separate identity and limited network access. A sandbox does not make malicious instructions safe, but it can prevent a model’s mistake from reaching internal services or production data.
Best Value
Require confirmation for consequential actions
Insert a human approval step immediately before sending a message, sharing a file, deleting data, making a purchase, changing permissions, or contacting an unapproved host. The approval screen should show the exact destination, data fields, and tool arguments—not merely a vague statement that an action is ready.
Confirmation should not be the only defense. An attacker may try to make a request look routine, and excessive prompts can lead users to approve mechanically. Combine approval with narrow permissions and clear transaction details.
Log and test continuously
Record the source and content identifiers used in a task, the model’s tool calls, destination hosts, retrieved records, approvals, and final outputs. Alert on unusual combinations such as a mail-summary task that searches unrelated personnel files or sends a request to a new domain.
Red-team current attack techniques, including hidden, encoded, multilingual, quoted, and multimodal payloads. Test the entire workflow—not just the language model—because connectors, renderers, proxies, and URL-preview services often create the final exfiltration path.

| Deployment pattern | Typical exposure | Minimum safeguards |
|---|---|---|
| Local summarizer with no connectors | Processes user-selected text and cannot reach external systems. | Keep content boundaries explicit; disable network access by default. |
| Read-only enterprise search assistant | Can retrieve private records but cannot write or send. | Use per-user scopes, source labels, retrieval filtering, and outbound-network restrictions. |
| Browser or mail agent with send capability | Can read external content and perform actions across websites or mail. | Sandbox browsing, exact URL allowlists, approval before every external side effect, and detailed logging. |
| Broad autonomous agent | Combines multiple data stores, tools, and background execution. | Prefer task-specific agents, short-lived credentials, strong isolation, continuous red-team testing, and a kill switch. |
Warning signs and response steps
Investigate promptly if an assistant makes an unexplained external request, references data outside the task, attempts to override its instructions, creates a draft containing secrets, or accesses a connector it normally does not use. A hidden instruction may be present even when the visible message looks benign.
- Stop the workflow. Disable the affected automation or revoke its session and tool tokens.
- Preserve evidence. Save the original item, rendered and raw forms, prompt traces, tool calls, destination URLs, proxy logs, and approval records.
- Identify exposure. Determine which records were retrieved, what values appeared in requests or outputs, and whether a third-party host received them.
- Contain access. Rotate credentials, remove unnecessary connectors, block suspicious destinations, and quarantine related messages or documents.
- Harden and retest. Add the missing control, replay the attack in a safe environment, and monitor for delayed or repeated requests.
What users can do
- Do not assume that a familiar sender makes an attachment or shared document trustworthy.
- Ask administrators which assistants can read mail, files, calendars, and internal systems.
- Prefer assistants that show their sources and require confirmation before sending or changing data.
- Report unexpected tool activity, external requests, or summaries that contain information unrelated to the task.
- Keep highly sensitive data out of broad, autonomous workflows unless the business need and controls are documented.
Bottom line
A zero-click prompt injection can steal data without a victim opening a link when an AI assistant automatically consumes hostile content, can access sensitive information, and has an exfiltration route such as an outbound request or message. The attack is conditional, not universal: restrict content and permissions, isolate network access, require informed approval for side effects, and monitor the complete tool chain.
