An ad appearing to a viewer is not proof that the creator is earning. To earn Watch Page ad revenue from a livestream, a channel must qualify for and be accepted into YPP, accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, and enable monetization for the stream. Even then, YouTube does not guarantee that an ad will fill every eligible slot.
Why ads can appear on a livestream that earns the creator nothing
YouTube may serve ads on content from channels that do not meet the higher YPP eligibility criteria. YouTube’s published rule says those channels are not yet eligible to receive a share of the revenue. That is why a viewer might see an ad before, during, or around a livestream even when the channel owner is not receiving a share.

Ad delivery and creator earnings are separate questions: YouTube can decide to serve an ad, while the channel remains ineligible for the revenue share. Seeing an ad does not reveal the channel’s YPP status or prove that its owner was paid.

- Meet the higher YPP eligibility route. YouTube’s YPP overview lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days.
- Apply and be accepted. Meeting the figures does not automatically admit a channel. YouTube reviews applications and requires channels to meet its policies and other signup requirements.
- Accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube says this module is required to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from long-form or live-streaming videos on the Watch Page or in the YouTube Video Player.
- Turn on monetization for the livestream. Monetization must be enabled on the stream itself. The channel’s YPP status alone does not mean every livestream is monetized.

YPP thresholds: earlier-access features versus Watch Page Ads
YouTube describes an earlier-access tier in eligible regions, but it is not the same as the higher threshold for Watch Page Ads. The figures below are YouTube’s published thresholds, accessed in 2026; availability of the earlier-access tier varies by country or region.

Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current country list for eligibility where you live. YouTube’s overview also notes that livestream watch hours do not count toward its watch-hour threshold if the stream is unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand. Do not assume every hour watched on a livestream qualifies.

What changes after monetization is enabled
YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when monetization is turned on for a livestream. Mid-roll ads can be inserted automatically or manually. However, YouTube’s ad systems determine which eligible slots receive ads; as YouTube puts it, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” A channel may therefore be eligible and monetized without an ad being delivered in every slot or to every viewer.
There is also a specific embed caveat: YouTube says ads are turned off for a livestream embedded on an external site when the player uses auto-start. This applies to that auto-start embed case, not necessarily to every embedded livestream.

What to check if ads appear but you are not earning
- Check the channel’s YPP status in YouTube Studio’s Earn area. Ads alone do not establish acceptance into the ad-sharing tier.
- Check the feature tier. Earlier-access YPP features do not by themselves mean Watch Page Ads are available.
- Check the Watch Page Monetization Module. A channel must accept it to earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live-streaming videos.
- Check the livestream’s monetization setting. A monetized channel still needs monetization enabled for the stream.
- Allow for variable ad delivery. Even with the requirements met, YouTube does not guarantee ads in each eligible slot.
