The channel must meet YouTube’s membership and YouTube Partner Program (YPP) requirements, and its content must comply with monetization policies. YouTube does not give a blanket approval or prohibition for 24/7 playlist streams; it assesses a channel in context.
What channel memberships require
Memberships let eligible viewers make recurring monthly payments in exchange for members-only perks, such as badges and emoji. YouTube treats this as a commerce feature, not as a donation or crowdfunding tool. Eligibility for memberships and approval of a channel’s content are separate questions.
YouTube’s current “How to earn money on YouTube” guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the following lower YPP tier thresholds for features that include memberships:
- At least 500 subscribers.
- At least three public uploads in the last 90 days.
- Either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Meeting those numbers is not enough on its own. You must be accepted into YPP, be at least 18, live in a country or region where memberships are available, and accept the applicable Commerce Product Module or, where still applicable, Commerce Product Addendum. YouTube also lists channel conditions: for example, a channel must not be set as Made for Kids or have a significant number of videos set as Made for Kids or otherwise ineligible; music channels under SRAV are also excluded. Feature availability can vary by location. Check the current YouTube eligibility guidance and the Earn tab in YouTube Studio before relying on a threshold.

Does YouTube allow a 24/7 playlist stream?
YouTube’s published guidance does not say that every always-on playlist stream is approved, nor does it categorically ban the format. Its monetization policies apply to live streams, and reviewers may assess the channel as a whole—including its theme, newest and most-viewed videos, content responsible for the most watch time, metadata, and About section.
The important question is what viewers actually get from the stream and the rest of the channel. A continuous stream of the creator’s own varied programming, with a clear entertainment or educational purpose, is materially different from a loop of copied videos, a minimally changed compilation, or interchangeable material produced at scale. YouTube says content should be original and authentic, and its policies address repetitive or mass-produced content as well as reused content that lacks significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value.

YouTube’s policy puts the originality expectation plainly: “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” Read the full YouTube channel monetization policies. The policy does not define a specific number of playlist items, loop length, or amount of variation that guarantees approval.
How to assess your playlist before applying
Use these questions as a practical risk check, not as a formula that predicts YouTube’s decision:

- Is the material yours? Original recordings and programming made for your audience are a stronger basis than videos copied from other channels.
- If you use others’ material, have you transformed it substantially? Permission to use a work does not, by itself, establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement.
- Does the programming offer a distinct viewer benefit? Explain what viewers can enjoy or learn, rather than relying on the fact that the stream stays live.
- Is the playlist meaningfully varied? A loop of near-identical or generic segments can raise repetition concerns. There is no published minimum variety threshold that assures approval.
- Does the channel as a whole support the same case? Review the videos and metadata that account for the most watch time as well as the live stream; the decision is not necessarily about one stream in isolation.
- Are the rights cleared? Check that you have the necessary rights to every video, track, image, and other element. Copyright clearance and monetization-policy compliance are distinct checks.
These factors follow YouTube’s general policy framework; they are not a promise that a particular stream or channel will be accepted.
Memberships and live-stream ads are separate
Membership income comes from members paying for perks. Live-stream advertising is a separate monetization option, available only when the channel and stream are eligible, and ad delivery is not guaranteed. YouTube says monetized live streams can use pre-roll and display ads, and creators can configure mid-roll ads.

YouTube reported that channels enabling automatic live mid-roll ads had over 20% higher average in-stream ad revenue per hour than channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries and measured in January 2024. That comparison concerns advertising revenue—not membership income, subscriber growth, or the expected result for a particular always-on stream. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
