Can a YouTube 24/7 Cricket Highlights Stream Get a Copyright Strike in India?

Yes. A YouTube 24/7 stream containing cricket highlights you do not have permission to use can be interrupted or removed, and a copyright removal can give your channel a strike. Indian broadcast rights and YouTube’s enforcement process are separate concerns: a Content ID claim alone typically is not a strike, but a 24/7 loop does not make unlicensed footage lawful or exempt from enforcement.

Why a cricket highlights stream can face copyright action

There are two layers to consider: rights under Indian law and YouTube’s platform rules. A clip may involve rights in the broadcast as well as other material, such as audio or graphics. Whether you may stream it depends on the rights in the specific material and the scope of any permission or applicable exception.

Indian law protects broadcasts

Section 37 of India’s Copyright Act, 1957 gives a broadcasting organisation a special broadcast reproduction right in its broadcasts. During the right’s term, the Act restricts acts including rebroadcasting and making a broadcast, or a substantial part of it, available to the public without the right owner’s licence. The Act defines broadcast to include rebroadcast and communication to the public to include making a work available at times chosen by members of the public. See the Copyright Act, Chapter VIII and Chapter I.

Section 37 sets the broadcast reproduction right’s term at 25 years from the beginning of the calendar year following the year the broadcast was made. That right does not mean every highlight has the same owner: footage, sound, graphics and other elements may have distinct rights and licences.

Rights depend on the event and licence

A Delhi High Court order in CS(COMM) 89/2026, hosted by the Department of Telecommunications, records a claimant’s assertion of exclusive India digital and television media rights for specified ICC events during 2024–2027, including live transmissions, highlights, clips and repeat transmissions. This is an example of rights allocated for particular events, territory and dates—not proof that the same claimant controls every cricket highlight. Consult the order document and verify the current rights holder for the actual footage you plan to use.

BCCI’s copyright notice concerns material on its website and should not be treated as proof that BCCI owns every match broadcast or highlight.

How YouTube handles live-stream copyright

YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. Depending on the platform process and rights-owner settings, detection can lead to a warning, a temporary replacement image, interruption or termination. YouTube also warns that territory restrictions may not prevent interruption if a channel with rights for those territories has not been added to the content owner’s allowlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

A Content ID claim is not the same as a strike

YouTube says a Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike. A copyright removal request is a legal request. If YouTube reviews it and considers it valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. For an active livestream removed for copyright, YouTube says livestream access is restricted for seven days. Three active copyright strikes within 90 days can subject a channel to termination under YouTube’s rules. Details are in YouTube’s copyright strike guidance and its page on copyright removal requests.

What does not automatically protect the stream

  • Giving credit: Attribution is not a substitute for permission.
  • Using short clips or editing them: Length or editing alone does not establish that a use is permitted.
  • Making the stream non-commercial: Non-commercial status does not automatically clear rights.
  • Looping footage: A continuous 24/7 format creates no licence or special copyright exception.
  • Geoblocking: Restricting territories alone does not guarantee a stream will avoid YouTube enforcement.

Section 39 of the Act contains limited exceptions, including fair dealing with excerpts for reporting current events, bona fide review, teaching or research. The statutory text does not establish that a 24/7 highlights channel qualifies. Assess the actual use and seek legal advice where needed; do not assume commentary or a short excerpt makes a continuous highlights stream lawful. See Chapter VIII of the Copyright Act.

Check rights before you stream

Before scheduling a stream, identify the rights in every element and confirm that permission covers your exact use. A licence for a clip or one platform does not necessarily authorize continuous retransmission.

  • Identify the specific match, event, footage, audio, commentary, graphics and other material in the package.
  • Confirm who controls each relevant right; do not assume the broadcaster, league, team or website notice covers everything.
  • Check that the licence covers India and any other territories where viewers may access the stream.
  • Confirm that it permits YouTube livestreaming, repeat transmission and continuous or looped use, for the intended period.
  • Keep the written licence and any required platform allowlisting confirmation. YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights owner’s allowlist.

If a stream is interrupted or you receive a strike

First identify the notice

Check YouTube Studio and the notice YouTube sent to determine whether the issue is a Content ID claim, a livestream interruption or a copyright removal request that resulted in a strike. The response depends on which action occurred; a claim is not automatically a strike.

For a strike, use a remedy only when it fits

YouTube lists three options: ask the claimant to retract the removal request, submit a counter-notification if the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified, or complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire. A counter-notification is a legal request shared with the claimant, not a routine appeal. YouTube says the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. Consider it only if you have an honest legal basis and understand the consequences. Read YouTube’s counter-notification instructions and its removal-request guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the footage is properly cleared and your goal is to keep an authorized YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home can stay off; StreamNeo streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo does not provide copyright clearance: use only footage you are authorized to stream. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
