Yes, it is technically possible to run an encoder on a Vultr server that loops a pre-recorded video to YouTube Live. But that does not establish that any particular Vultr instance will run without interruption around the clock. You need adequate sustained CPU and outbound network capacity, must account for data-transfer charges, and should test and monitor the exact setup before relying on it.
What a 24/7 setup requires
The server reads a video file, encodes or passes it through, and sends a continuous live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key for a YouTube broadcast. The video is pre-recorded; this is not a camera-based live stream. Vultr describes its Cloud Compute instances as shared-CPU virtual machines, and instance selection depends on needs such as vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth. The cited documentation does not specify a minimum instance size for this workload or guarantee a particular sustained upload rate. See Vultr Cloud Compute documentation and Vultr instance provisioning documentation.

- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live, plus a broadcast and its stream URL and key.
- A video file the encoder can read continuously, with enough storage on or accessible to the server.
- An encoder configured for YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- Sufficient sustained CPU and outbound network capacity, with monitoring and a recovery plan.
Recommended settings for 1080p
YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026, recommend H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. These bitrate figures are video recommendations, so allow additional capacity for audio and transport overhead. Confirm current settings in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
| Target output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Other key settings |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval; RTMPS recommended for encrypted delivery |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval; RTMPS recommended for encrypted delivery |
Choose the frame rate you actually need before setting the bitrate. A server’s advertised network figure is not proof that it can sustain the stream under your workload. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and cautions that network disruption can break a stream. Its practical rule is: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Check the real stream health and leave room for audio and network overhead, rather than sizing exactly to the video bitrate. See YouTube streaming tips.

How much outbound data does it use?
At a constant video bitrate, the video payload alone is approximately 54 GB per day at 5 Mbps or 64.8 GB per day at 6 Mbps. Over 30 days, that is about 1.62 TB or 1.944 TB, respectively. These are arithmetic planning estimates based on bitrate and decimal units—not Vultr measurements—and exclude audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions, and other server traffic.
Vultr says internet-bound outbound transfer counts toward bandwidth usage, while inbound traffic is not metered for this purpose. Its documentation describes 2 TB of free account bandwidth per month in addition to instance allocations, and an overage rate of $0.01 per GB once applicable allocations are exceeded. Allocation and billing terms can affect the actual bill; check the current Vultr console and terms before choosing a plan or estimating costs. See Vultr bandwidth billing documentation.

Set up and test the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its stream URL and key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a public script, log, or repository.
- Prepare the file and instance. Make the video accessible to the encoder for the full run and confirm there is adequate disk space if it is staged locally. Choose a Vultr instance based on the encoder’s actual CPU and memory needs, storage, and bandwidth. No minimum plan size is established for this use.
- Configure the encoder. Set the intended 1080p resolution and frame rate, use YouTube’s corresponding H.264 bitrate, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the RTMPS ingest URL where available. Configure the encoder to read and loop the pre-recorded file. The exact loop command and process-supervisor setup depend on the encoder and are not specified by YouTube’s ingest settings.
- Preview before going live. Check that YouTube receives the feed, the picture and audio are correct, and the Live Control Room reports healthy stream conditions. Test the actual source file, not just a short synthetic clip.
- Run a representative endurance test. Monitor CPU, outbound transfer, dropped frames, and audio continuity over a sustained period. Configure process restart and alerting, and test how the setup recovers if the encoder exits or the connection drops. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but its guidance does not define a test duration that certifies uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Copyright, reused content, and stream-key risks
A file being pre-recorded does not make it safe to rebroadcast. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material in the stream, and YouTube’s policies still apply to live content. Repeatedly looping material also does not, by itself, establish eligibility for monetization; channel monetization is assessed under YouTube’s applicable policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies before broadcasting.

Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. A leaked key could let someone else send a feed to your broadcast.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth or unstable ingest: Check actual outbound capacity under load, reduce the target bitrate if needed, and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Review the stream-health diagnostics in Live Control Room.
- Video or audio stutters: Check encoder CPU use, source-file read errors, dropped frames, and network interruptions. Confirm audio is included in capacity planning rather than treating the video bitrate as the full stream rate.
- The video stops at the end of the file: Confirm the encoder is configured to loop the source and that the file remains accessible. Test a full loop before relying on the stream.
- The broadcast ends when the encoder process exits: Add process supervision, restart behavior, and alerts, then test recovery. Restarting the encoder may require reconnecting to the same active YouTube broadcast.
- Unexpected transfer charges appear: Compare Vultr’s metered outbound usage with the expected video payload plus audio and overhead, and verify the current account and instance allocations and overage terms.
- The stream will not start: Recheck channel eligibility, the selected broadcast, ingest URL, and stream key. Replace a key that has been exposed rather than continuing to use it.
What a Vultr setup can—and cannot—promise
A Vultr VM can plausibly host the encoder, but the available provider and YouTube documentation do not establish that a specific plan, region, or configuration will maintain an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. No particular instance size, sustained egress rate, service-level guarantee, monthly bill, or successful end-to-end endurance result is established here. Reliability depends on the exact instance, file, encoder workload, network, recovery configuration, and monitoring. Test the configuration you plan to use and check current Vultr terms before committing to a long-running stream.
