Yes. A Ventoy USB drive can hold ordinary documents, photos, installers and other folders alongside bootable ISO files. Put both kinds of content on Ventoy’s large first partition. Leave the small EFI partition alone: it contains Ventoy’s boot files, not your working storage.
The available capacity is shared. Every ISO and personal file you copy reduces the space left for the others, so the practical limit is the free space on that large data partition.

How Ventoy divides the USB drive
Ventoy normally creates two partitions when it is installed. Their roles are different, and understanding that split prevents most file-management mistakes.
| Partition | Purpose | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Large first partition | Stores ISO files and ordinary user data | Copy files and folders here. ISO files may be placed in any directory. |
| Small EFI partition | Stores Ventoy’s boot files and firmware-support data | Leave it unchanged; do not use it as your personal storage area. |
The layout is used with both Ventoy’s default MBR and GPT arrangements. The first partition is an ordinary filesystem volume, so your operating system can mount it like other removable storage. You can create folders, rename files, move content and remove files without using a special Ventoy command.

When the computer boots from the USB drive, Ventoy searches the large first partition for boot images. The small EFI partition is involved in starting Ventoy, but it is not where you place ISOs or documents.
Putting files and ISOs on the same partition
Use normal folders for organization
You can organize the first partition in whatever way suits your workflow. For example, you might create ISOs, Drivers, Installers and Documents folders. Ventoy’s official FAQ says ISO files can be stored anywhere on the first partition, not only at its top level.
Ventoy searches directories and subdirectories recursively. An ISO in ISOs/Linux or Installers/Windows can therefore be found without moving it to the root of the drive. Ordinary files that are not boot images remain available when the drive is connected to Windows, macOS or Linux, subject to the filesystem’s compatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Hide a directory tree from the boot menu
Recursive scanning is convenient, but it can also make an ISO appear in the boot menu when you are using that file only for archival purposes. To exclude a directory and all of its subdirectories from Ventoy’s ISO search, place a file named .ventoyignore in that directory. Ventoy will skip that directory tree while looking for ISO files; the other files remain accessible through the operating system.

Use this selectively. If you put .ventoyignore in a parent folder, every nested folder is excluded as well, so an ISO you intended to boot may disappear until you remove or relocate the marker file.
How much space is really available?
Ventoy does not reserve a separate pool for personal files. The large first partition has one shared free-space total. A collection of large ISO images can consume most of the room, leaving little space for documents; a mostly empty ISO folder leaves more room for general storage.
Before copying a new image, check the free-space indicator for the mounted first partition. Keep additional working room rather than filling it completely: operating systems may need temporary space while copying, extracting or updating files, and a nearly full removable volume is harder to maintain.
No particular USB capacity or speed is established by Ventoy’s documentation for this use. Choose a USB flash drive according to the total size of the ISOs and files you expect to carry, plus headroom for future additions. A larger or faster drive may be useful, but there is no universal model recommendation for this question.

Choosing a filesystem for the large partition
Ventoy documents exFAT as the default filesystem for the main partition. It also lists FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS and ext2/3/4 as alternatives. The right choice depends on the computers that must read the drive and the kinds of files you will store.
| Filesystem | What Ventoy’s documentation establishes | Compatibility implication |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | Default for the large partition | A general-purpose choice when the drive must be shared across modern systems. |
| FAT32 | Listed as an alternative | Use only when the computers and file requirements you have are compatible with it. |
| NTFS | Listed as an alternative | Useful in environments centered on Windows, while support on other systems should be verified. |
| UDF | Listed as an alternative | Consider it only when your target devices specifically support it. |
| XFS | Listed as an alternative | Ventoy warns that Windows cannot use the USB with this choice, so it is unsuitable for Windows installation media. |
| ext2/3/4 | Listed as alternatives | Ventoy gives the same Windows-availability warning; these filesystems are unsuitable when Windows access or Windows installation is required. |
Ventoy’s FAQ also says that, if you reformat the large partition, the cluster size must be at least 2048. Follow that requirement rather than accepting a smaller value from a formatting utility. A reformat changes the filesystem and removes the files on that partition, so copy your data elsewhere first.
Install Ventoy without losing existing files
The ability to store ordinary files applies after Ventoy has been installed. It does not mean installation preserves data already on the selected disk. Ventoy’s FAQ warns that installing Ventoy on a USB drive or local disk deletes all data on that disk.

- Identify the correct removable disk. Disconnect other removable drives if that makes the target easier to recognize. Selecting the wrong disk can destroy unrelated data.
- Back up everything on the target. Copy documents, photos, existing ISOs and any other files to another disk or a verified backup before starting.
- Run Ventoy’s installation utility and select the USB drive. Confirm the device identity and accept the erase warning only after checking it again.
- Let Ventoy create its partitions. The result should include the large first data partition and the small EFI partition.
- Mount the large first partition after installation. Copy your ISOs and ordinary files there. Do not copy personal data to, rename files in, or reformat the small EFI partition.
If you need to change the main filesystem later, back up the whole first partition, reformat it with a supported option and the required minimum cluster size, then restore your files. Treat this as a destructive operation even if the formatting tool presents it as a routine change.

What you will see when booting
On startup, Ventoy presents bootable images it found during its scan of the large partition. Folder names can help you distinguish similarly named files, so use descriptive names such as an operating-system edition and release rather than leaving every image with an ambiguous default filename.
Personal documents do not become boot entries merely because they are on the same partition. Ventoy is looking for boot images; the rest of the content remains normal removable storage. If an archived ISO is detected unexpectedly, move it under a directory containing .ventoyignore or store it outside the Ventoy partition.
Common problems and fixes
The drive boots, but my files are missing
Check that you are viewing the large first partition, not the small EFI partition. Some operating systems may display both volumes with different labels or mount points. If the large partition is not mounted, reconnect the USB drive or assign it a mount point using your operating system’s disk-management tools.

- Confirm that the file is on the large first partition, not the EFI partition.
- Check whether its folder, or a parent folder, contains
.ventoyignore. - Verify that the copy completed and that the file is not still being written.
- Reconnect the drive and boot again so Ventoy can rescan the directory tree.
Windows cannot read the drive
If the main partition was reformatted as XFS or ext2/3/4, this matches Ventoy’s documented limitation: Windows cannot use the USB in that configuration. Restore a Windows-readable filesystem after backing up the contents, then copy the files and ISOs back.

Installation erased data
That behavior is expected when Ventoy is installed on a disk containing files. Ventoy’s installation warning is destructive, and recovery is not guaranteed. Restore from your backup; do not assume that files present before installation remain recoverable.
The partition was reformatted but Ventoy no longer behaves normally
Check that you reformatted the large data partition rather than the EFI partition, used a filesystem listed by Ventoy and selected a cluster size of at least 2048. If the EFI partition was altered, reinstalling Ventoy may be necessary, which again requires a complete backup because installation erases the selected disk.
Practical ways to use one Ventoy drive
Emergency toolkit
Keep several boot ISOs in an ISOs folder and store hardware drivers, firmware notes and recovery documents beside them. The same drive can then boot a computer and provide the reference files needed during repair.

Use a clearly named folder for manuals, checklists and configuration exports, while keeping boot images in separate subfolders. Add .ventoyignore to any archive folder that contains ISO files you do not want shown in the boot menu.
Multi-computer installation media
Choose the main filesystem based on the computers that will access the drive. If Windows machines must read it or use it for Windows installation, avoid XFS and ext2/3/4 because Ventoy documents those as unavailable to Windows. Keep enough free capacity for replacement images and updated documents rather than filling the partition with obsolete versions.
