Can a Temple Trust Monetize a 24/7 Aarti Stream on YouTube in India?

Yes, in principle. A temple trust in India can apply to monetize a 24/7 aarti stream through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), but it must meet YouTube’s eligibility rules and pass a channel-wide review. The religious subject alone neither qualifies nor disqualifies the stream: originality, rights to the footage and audio, and the channel’s overall content matter. Tax and GST treatment are separate questions that depend on the trust’s circumstances.

What has to happen before a temple earns YouTube revenue?

India is on YouTube’s list of countries where creators can join YPP. A channel must meet one of the current entry thresholds, satisfy the program’s other conditions, and be accepted after YouTube reviews it. Hitting a threshold makes a channel eligible to apply; it does not guarantee acceptance, ads, or income. See YouTube’s YPP overview and its list of supported regions.

YPP entry thresholds

  • At least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months; or
  • At least 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days.

These are the thresholds in YouTube’s guidance checked in 2026. The channel must also meet signup conditions, including being in a supported country, having no active Community Guidelines strikes, enabling two-step verification, having access to advanced features, and linking an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube evaluates the channel as a whole. A public livestream can contribute to the watch-hour threshold only if it remains public and is converted to video on demand; unlisted, deleted, or non-converted streams do not count under the cited guidance.

Does a continuous aarti stream meet YouTube’s content policies?

YouTube does not identify religious content as categorically barred from monetization. The issue is what the channel actually offers and whether it has the rights to broadcast it. YouTube says its monetization policy is intended to ensure “monetized content offers viewers something appealing and interesting to watch.” Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under the “inauthentic content” policy; YouTube said such content was already ineligible under existing rules. The review is channel-wide, and videos should provide distinct creative, educational, or other value. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Make the stream the trust’s own, not a borrowed loop

  • Use a live camera feed of a ceremony the trust controls, or footage for which it has explicit permission. Keep records of permissions and any relevant licences.
  • Clear the rights to music, recordings, and other material heard or shown in the stream. A temple’s right to perform a ceremony does not automatically establish rights to every recording or composition used in it.
  • Consider whether the channel provides meaningful original material and whether repeated programming is sufficiently distinct. An endlessly replayed recording—especially someone else’s—creates different originality and rights concerns from continuous access to a real ceremony.
  • Do not treat ads appearing on the stream as proof that the channel has been accepted into YPP or is receiving a share. YouTube says ads may appear when a rights holder places them on material.

Which live-stream features can generate revenue?

For eligible, monetized channels, YouTube documents advertising, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live-stream monetization options. With live monetization enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. Delivery is not assured: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Balance ads against the ceremony

Ads can interrupt the viewing experience, including during a live religious service. If interruptions during a central part of aarti are unacceptable, the trust should consider whether and how to use mid-rolls. YouTube lets eligible channels delay automatic mid-rolls for important moments. That is a viewer-experience decision, not a guarantee that ads will be absent or that revenue will reach a particular level.

YouTube reported that creators who enabled automatic live mid-roll ads had more than 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour than channels that did not, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s aggregate comparison, not a forecast for a temple channel or a promise of results. See YouTube’s information about live automatic mid-roll ads.

Do YouTube payments qualify for a temple trust’s tax exemptions?

That cannot be answered for a particular trust from its religious purpose alone. The Income Tax Department says Section 11 can exempt income derived from property held under trust wholly for charitable or religious purposes to the extent it is applied to those purposes in India, subject to statutory conditions. It also says Section 12AB registration is mandatory to claim that Section 11 exemption. The trust’s registration, deed, accounts, income sources, and use of income all matter; the guidance does not establish that every YouTube payment is automatically exempt. Read the Department’s guidance on trusts and tax benefits and seek advice on the trust’s actual records.

Do not promise donors a Section 80G deduction without checking

A donation to a temple is not automatically deductible for the donor. Section 80G eligibility depends on approval and recordkeeping conditions, and the law includes rules concerning institutions expressed to benefit a particular religious community or caste. Separate provisions address certain specifically notified donations for temple renovation or repair; they do not create a blanket deduction for all temple donations or livestream contributions. Confirm the trust’s current approval and the specific donation’s eligibility before making any deduction claim. See the Income Tax Act.

What about GST on donations and YouTube ad revenue?

CBIC’s Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST says that a donation acknowledgement expressing gratitude and public recognition, without advertising or promoting the donor’s business, is not a service supplied for consideration: “Therefore, there is no GST liability on such consideration.” That statement concerns the described donation acknowledgement; it should not be applied to YouTube advertising income. CBIC materials also list exemptions for conducting a religious ceremony and certain services connected with qualifying religious places, but they do not decide the GST treatment of this trust’s YouTube ad receipts, registration requirement, or place-of-supply position. Those questions require advice based on the trust’s state, turnover, contracts, and accounts. See CBIC Circular No. 116/35/2019-GST and CBIC GST guidance.

Does the trust need special streaming equipment?

No specific encoder or camera is a monetization requirement. YouTube supports livestreaming through a webcam, mobile device, or encoder. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—can help when a production needs external audio or video equipment or more advanced control, but it is optional. YouTube’s setup guide includes examples such as AJA HELO Plus and lists software and services with continuous-stream capabilities; those examples do not establish current prices or availability. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide and encoder setup guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the trust’s stream is a prepared video or playlist rather than a live camera ceremony, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home internet connection staying on; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. For a temple’s actual aarti, use a setup that captures the ceremony live. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
