Can a smartwatch tell when workers need water? A research wearable described in a 2025 paper is designed to track sweat loss and sodium alongside skin temperature, thermal flux and movement, then use vibration alerts to prompt the wearer. It is a promising worker-focused research platform—not a confirmed retail smartwatch, a proven way to prevent heat illness, or a substitute for water, rest and shade.
How does a sweat-sensing watch help workers stay hydrated in the heat?
The 2025 research system combines chemical sensing with other body and activity signals. Electrodes embedded in a microfluidic channel analyze sweat that enters the channel. From those measurements, the device estimates whole-body sweat loss, sweating rate, sweat sodium concentration and sodium loss. It also records skin temperature, temperature difference or thermal flux, and movement through an accelerometer. The paper describes the device and its reported demonstrations.

That combination matters because a sweat reading alone is not the whole picture: temperature and activity provide additional context about the wearer’s conditions. The system is designed to give haptic feedback and to store data on the device, then send it by Bluetooth to a smartphone and cloud portal.
What the vibration alerts mean
In the device design reported in the paper, a vibration follows each 500 mL of estimated sweat loss, with continuous vibration at a study-defined excessive-loss threshold of 2% of body weight. Those are settings used by this research device, not universal hydration targets or medical advice. Individual needs vary, and workplace water and rest practices should not depend on a wearable’s threshold.

Is it a smartwatch workers can buy now?
The cited 2025 paper describes a research platform and reports bench testing and on-body field studies, including physically demanding activities performed while wearing protective equipment. It does not establish that this particular sweat-sensing system is commercially available as a finished smartwatch. Nor does demonstrating that it can collect and transmit data prove that it diagnoses dehydration or prevents heat illness.
A separate 2026 pilot provides an example of wearable monitoring in an actual work setting, but it tested three distinct systems rather than this experimental platform. The Nix Hydration Biosensor was used for hydration monitoring, a CALERA sensor for core temperature, and a Garmin Vivoactive for smartwatch-derived physiological and activity data. The Garmin was not a sweat sensor or direct hydration monitor.

What did the farmworker field pilot find?
In a 2026 study, an East Carolina University research team monitored 30 farmworkers during one July work shift in eastern North Carolina. Study authors aligned physiological and environmental data at one-minute intervals and assessed prediction of a modified Physiological Strain Index. The devices’ reported data retrieval was:

| Device | Role in the study | Reported data retrieval |
|---|---|---|
| CALERA | Core-temperature monitoring | 100% |
| Garmin Vivoactive | Smartwatch-derived physiological and activity data | 97% |
| Nix Hydration Biosensor | Hydration monitoring | 80% |
These percentages describe retrieval in that specific pilot, not each device’s accuracy, clinical validation or general reliability. The study’s one-shift, 30-worker scope is useful as a field feasibility comparison but cannot establish how devices will perform across other jobs, climates, shifts or workforces. It also does not test the 2025 research platform.

What can a wearable add to workplace heat safety?
A wearable may help make changes in a worker’s condition more visible, and alerts could serve as a reminder to drink. But heat illness prevention still depends on practical controls workers can use regardless of whether a device is available or functioning. OSHA recommends accessible, sufficient cool drinking water and regular drinking rather than waiting until thirsty. For work lasting two hours or more, OSHA says employers should provide access to additional electrolyte-containing fluids. It also recommends longer and more frequent breaks as heat stress rises, with a cool location available for recovery. See OSHA’s Water. Rest. Shade. guidance.
In a workplace plan, a wearable should be treated as one possible aid—not as a water-delivery system, a replacement for breaks, or proof that a worker is safe to continue. Employers should continue to provide water, recovery opportunities and heat-safety procedures even if workers are using monitoring devices.

What if a worker shows signs of heat stroke?
Do not wait for a wearable alert when someone appears seriously ill. OSHA identifies confusion, fainting and seizures as possible heat-stroke symptoms and directs people to call 911. While help is on the way, begin cooling the person. Follow OSHA’s heat-illness first-aid guidance; a monitoring device is not an emergency response.
