Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo one can guarantee that a stolen phone will be completely untraceable. A phone’s map location, its ability to connect to a mobile network, and a police investigation are separate things. If your phone is stolen, use its official lost-device controls, secure your accounts, contact your carrier and report the theft. Give any location information to police; don’t try to recover the phone yourself.
What “traceable” means for a stolen phone
The word “trace” can refer to different systems, and they do not all do the same job:

| System | What it can do | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Find My or Android lost-device controls | May show a location or let the owner lock the phone, depending on the device, settings and service availability. | A map indication is not proof of an exact address or the identity of whoever has the phone. |
| Carrier and IMEI processes | A carrier may be able to block a handset or SIM. Police.uk advises UK victims to give the IMEI to police and their phone provider. | An IMEI is identifying information, not a consumer live-location tool. Do not expect a public website to locate a phone from its IMEI. |
| Police reporting and investigation | Police can receive the theft report, IMEI and relevant location information and make enquiries. | Neither a report nor an app location guarantees that the phone will be found or recovered. |
Carrier procedures, available device features and legal rules vary by country and provider. Police.uk’s advice below is specific to the UK; the Metropolitan Police information concerns London.
Why a location pin may not identify the phone’s exact whereabouts
Location services can help, but a displayed point is not necessarily precise enough to identify a particular home, flat or person. In a 2024 FOI response, the Metropolitan Police Service said a phone shown at a location in a built-up area could in reality be at one of several nearby properties. Treat a map result as information for police, not as permission to confront someone or enter a property.

The same response said more than 12,000 phones were stolen by means of robbery or theft snatch in the Metropolitan Police’s local context. It described recoveries as a small fraction but did not give an exact fraction. That figure is not a national total or a recovery rate.
What to do if your phone has been stolen
- Use the official lost-device service. From another trusted device, use Apple Find My or the Android lost-device controls available for your phone. Mark it as lost or lock it if the feature is enabled. Apple says Lost Mode locks the screen and can show a contact message.
- Report the theft. Contact local police and provide the phone’s IMEI, a description and any location information. Police.uk gives UK reporting guidance; use the appropriate police service and procedure where you live.
- Contact your phone provider. Ask how to block the handset or SIM and protect your number. Check how to stop verification messages or calls from reaching the stolen phone or number. The available process depends on your provider.
- Protect financial and email accounts. Contact your bank and other financial providers, change passwords for sensitive accounts, and sign out of other sessions where the service allows it.
- Consider remote erasure carefully. If protecting stored data requires it, check the instructions for your device before erasing. Remote erase is consequential: understand what will happen to your data and device protections first.
- Check any existing insurance. Review your policy and report a claim if the theft is covered; eligibility and requirements are policy-specific.
What Apple’s Activation Lock does—and does not do
Apple says Activation Lock is included with Find My and turns on automatically when Find My is enabled. The Apple Account password is required to turn off Find My, erase the device or reactivate and use it. This protection can make a stolen iPhone harder for someone else to use, but it is not the same as locating the phone.

Apple says Activation Lock can continue to deter reactivation after an erase. Erasing a device therefore should not be described as automatically removing that protection. Marking the device as lost is the recommended first step when it is missing.

Can you track a stolen phone with its IMEI?
An IMEI helps identify a handset. Police.uk recommends recording it somewhere other than the phone and supplying it to police and the phone provider after a theft. A provider may use it to block the device, but an IMEI is not a public live-tracking service. Avoid websites claiming that entering an IMEI will reveal a phone’s location.

Why you should not try to make a phone “untraceable”
Trying to defeat tracking or alter a stolen phone is not a safe or appropriate recovery strategy. Google’s Find Hub policy prohibits tracking people or property that does not belong to the user and warns that non-consensual tracking or stalking may be a crime. If you own the phone, use the official account-based controls and leave any recovery action to police. If you found a phone, do not access or track it; turn it in through an appropriate local channel.
