Can a Single Tile Fill 3D Space Without Repeating? What the Chair44 Preprint Claims

Yes—if the claim in a September 2026 preprint is correct. Ioannis Tsiokos proposes Chair44, one decorated three-dimensional shape that fills ordinary Euclidean space, while claiming that every possible tiling by that shape is non-periodic. That is stronger than showing one attractive arrangement that happens not to repeat.

The important qualification is status: Chair44 is presented as a preprint and proof submission. The evidence currently available does not establish independent peer review or journal publication, so the result should be described as a recent mathematical claim rather than a settled theorem verified by the wider community.

What does “fill 3D space without repeating” mean?

A space-filling tile is a solid whose congruent copies cover all of three-dimensional Euclidean space with no gaps and no overlaps. The copies may be moved and rotated according to the rules of the construction; the central question is whether one shape alone can enforce a genuinely non-repeating arrangement.

Periodic versus non-periodic tilings

A tiling is translationally periodic if some nonzero translation moves the entire pattern onto itself. In practical terms, a repeating block can be shifted by a fixed distance and line up exactly with the original tiling.

An aperiodic monotile is a single shape that can tile space but cannot produce a periodic tiling. There are two different strengths of claim:

  • Existential non-periodicity: at least one tiling made from the shape does not repeat periodically.
  • Forced aperiodicity: every legal tiling made from the shape is non-periodic.

Chair44 is presented as the second, stronger kind. The authors say every Chair44 tiling has no translational period and has a symmetry group of order at most 24.

What is Chair44?

A seven-cube chair with geometric decorations

The proposed solid is described as a rational polyhedral 3-ball called Chair44. Its basic body resembles a chair assembled from seven unit cubes. The shape also has 24 exposed unit panels carrying tiny square-pyramid features.

Those pyramids are not cosmetic markings. They are geometric parts of the tile, so the matching information is built into the three-dimensional boundary. A copy cannot simply be recolored or relabeled to bypass the intended matching relationships.

What the decorations are supposed to do

According to the preprint, the surface features register neighboring copies to an underlying lattice. Once the local contacts are constrained, the copies organize into larger groups called “supertiles.” Those supertiles then form a unique hierarchy at successively larger scales.

This hierarchy is the mechanism intended to prevent a finite repeating block. A periodic pattern would eventually have to reproduce the same local and large-scale organization indefinitely, but the claimed supertile structure forces a specific progression of larger groupings instead.

How strong is the mathematical claim?

The formal statement attributed to the preprint is that every Chair44 tiling has no translational period and a symmetry group of order at most 24. “Every” matters: the paper is not merely exhibiting one hand-built non-repeating pattern.

Why mention the symmetry group?

Translations are only one kind of global repetition. A three-dimensional arrangement might also be preserved by a rotation, reflection, screw motion, or another isometry. A finite symmetry group with order at most 24 rules out an infinite family of such operations for any one tiling.

The paper frames this as strong aperiodicity. The intended result is therefore more restrictive than “there is no obvious repeating direction.” It aims to exclude translational repetition and other infinite-order symmetries, while allowing a finite set of ordinary symmetries.

What is established about the proof?

The authors describe a written geometric argument combined with exhaustive finite enumerations. The abstract says two implementations replay the finite census, and Lean 4 checks the finite gates and logical assembly subject to a named compiler hook.

That description tells readers how the authors say the proof was organized. It is not the same as an independent audit. The September 2026 item remains a preprint or proof submission, and no independent peer review or journal acceptance should be inferred from the computational details.

Why older three-dimensional examples did not fully settle the question

Earlier constructions demonstrated important forms of non-periodicity, but they left loopholes under the strongest modern definition.

Construction What it demonstrates Remaining limitation
Schmitt–Conway–Danzer biprism A three-dimensional tile with non-repeating behavior A screw motion—rotation combined with translation—can carry a tiling onto itself.
Three-dimensional Socolar–Taylor tile Aperiodic structure in three dimensions It has a periodic stacking direction.
Chair44 proposal A single decorated solid claimed to force every tiling to be non-periodic The result is recent and presented as a preprint rather than an independently verified journal theorem.

These distinctions explain why “Can one shape tile space but never repeat?” is harder than simply finding an unusual arrangement. A construction can look irregular while retaining a hidden screw axis or an exactly repeating stack.

How Chair44’s matching system differs from external rules

Many tiling demonstrations rely on colored edges, arrows, labels, or a separate rulebook that says which pieces may touch. Chair44 is intended to encode the matching behavior in the solid itself. The square-pyramid features are physical geometry on the exposed panels.

That distinction does not make the proof automatically correct, but it changes what “one tile” means. If the geometric decorations are part of the congruent shape, the construction does not require a collection of differently marked pieces. The same decorated solid is reused throughout the tiling.

Local contacts and global hierarchy

The claimed logic has two levels:

  • Local level: the small features constrain which faces and orientations can meet.
  • Global level: those local contacts force copies into larger supertiles, and the supertiles into an infinite hierarchy.

Aperiodicity is usually won at the second level. Local rules may allow many choices, but if every legal choice eventually respects the same hierarchy, no finite translation can reproduce the entire structure.

How does this compare with the Hat and Spectre?

The Hat and Spectre answer the analogous question in two dimensions, not in three-dimensional Euclidean space.

Tile Dimension Key property Important qualification
Hat Two-dimensional plane Forces aperiodic tilings Its construction uses reflected and unreflected copies.
Spectre Two-dimensional plane Chiral aperiodic monotile It tiles without reflections and still has no periodic tiling.
Chair44 Three-dimensional Euclidean space Claimed strongly aperiodic monotile Its proposed status is a September 2026 preprint and proof submission.

These examples share the idea of a single shape enforcing non-periodicity, but a two-dimensional result cannot serve as proof of the three-dimensional case. The dimensions, allowable motions, and possible escape routes are different.

What does “every tiling” exclude?

The claim is not limited to a particular placement, orientation, or diagram. If accepted, it would apply to every complete tiling by congruent Chair44 copies, including arrangements obtained through different local choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also goes beyond the absence of a simple repeating box. A pattern could fail to repeat under translation and still possess an infinite-order rotational or screw symmetry. The stated symmetry-group bound is meant to address that broader concern.

At the same time, “aperiodic” does not mean random. A Chair44 tiling can have rigid long-range organization, finite symmetries, and deterministic hierarchical structure. Non-periodic means that no allowed global operation in the prohibited class reproduces the whole tiling, not that the arrangement lacks order.

How to read the preprint’s evidence responsibly

  1. Separate the theorem statement from its status. The mathematical claim is that Chair44 tiles space and forces strong aperiodicity. The publication status is a recent preprint, not established peer-reviewed consensus.
  2. Check the definition of symmetry. Ask whether a source rules out only translations or also screw motions and other infinite-order isometries.
  3. Check what counts as one tile. For Chair44, the pyramidal face features are part of the geometry. A result based on separately colored pieces answers a different version of the monotile question.
  4. Distinguish finite verification from the infinite conclusion. Exhaustive enumeration can check finite local cases, while the written argument must explain why those cases force the claimed infinite hierarchy.
  5. Look for independent confirmation. Reproducible implementations and formal checks are useful evidence, but they do not by themselves establish that the broader mathematical community has accepted the result.

Could a real Chair44 tiling be built?

A physical model would be a way to illustrate the geometry, not a substitute for the proof. The small square-pyramid features would need to be manufactured accurately enough that intended contacts are distinguishable and unintended contacts do not create extra placements.

The university explainer associated with this topic describes ongoing investigation of aperiodic honeycomb structures and their mechanical properties, including the use of 3D printing in research. That supports materials research as a possible direction, but it does not establish a finished commercial application or a proven mechanical advantage for Chair44 itself.

Potential research questions include how hierarchical voids or contacts affect stiffness, fracture paths, acoustic behavior, transport through porous structures, and fabrication tolerances. Those are applications to investigate, not results demonstrated by the preprint.

What would change the answer?

The answer would become more definitive if the Chair44 construction were independently checked, its finite enumerations reproduced without the authors’ compiler hook, and the complete argument accepted through peer review. Until then, the most accurate wording is conditional: a recent preprint claims that one decorated solid fills three-dimensional space while forcing every tiling to be non-periodic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chair44 already a proven theorem?

It is presented in a September 2026 preprint and proof submission. The available account does not establish independent peer review or journal publication, so its status should be described as a recent claim awaiting broader verification.

Does a Chair44 tiling repeat at any scale?

The authors claim an infinite hierarchy of larger supertiles, which is intended to prevent translational periodicity. That does not mean the tiling is patternless; it can remain highly organized while never reproducing a finite block by translation.

Are the Hat and Spectre three-dimensional tiles?

No. They are two-dimensional monotiles for the plane. They provide context for aperiodic tiling but do not prove a result about filling three-dimensional Euclidean space.

Why are screw motions important?

A screw motion combines a rotation with a translation. An arrangement can lack an ordinary translation period yet still be preserved by such an operation, which is why strong aperiodicity considers more than simple repeating shifts.
