A refurbished Dell OptiPlex can run a modest YouTube stream from OBS, but the OptiPlex name alone cannot tell you whether a particular unit will manage it reliably or cheaply. Check the exact configuration, test the real stream for an extended period, confirm stable upload and power, and account for the work of monitoring and restarting sessions.
What determines whether an OptiPlex is suitable?
The exact computer matters more than the product-family badge. OptiPlex models span different generations and configurations, and there is no sourced model-specific benchmark or certification establishing that every refurbished unit can sustain OBS streaming. OBS rendering and encoding use system resources; a static scene or lightly animated loop with modest overlays should be less demanding than gameplay or multiple animated sources, but that is a practical expectation, not a performance test of a particular OptiPlex.

Before buying, get the seller to identify the exact CPU, integrated graphics and video-encoder capability, RAM, SSD condition, operating system, and return window. A newer, healthy unit with encoder support suited to your intended OBS settings is a better starting point than choosing by model name or advertised “streaming” suitability.

- Exact CPU generation and the available hardware encoding options in OBS.
- Memory and storage condition, including SSD health; budget for replacement parts if needed.
- Cooling and sustained operating condition, not just whether the PC boots.
- Noise, warranty or return rights, and the total price after any upgrades.
- Measured wall power while streaming, if you can test the unit before committing.
Choose a YouTube output the PC and connection can sustain
Start with a modest output and move up only after testing. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends choosing quality that can produce a reliable stream on your internet connection. Its H.264 bitrate guidance is:

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular ISP connection will sustain the stream. Leave upload headroom for variation and other network use; if the connection fluctuates, choose the lower mode. Test representative motion and audio rather than judging the stream from a static test frame. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Encoder settings to check
- Use H.264 and constant bitrate (CBR) as a straightforward starting point.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, as recommended in YouTube’s advanced settings.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio as appropriate for the encoder.
- Prefer RTMPS where available in your streaming setup.
Use settings appropriate to the encoder you select and confirm them against YouTube’s current guidance. OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guide explains that rendering and encoding overload can affect output; watch OBS statistics during the actual scene and workload you plan to run.
Test the actual setup before relying on it
- Build the intended scene in OBS. Include the same video, overlays, transitions, and audio sources you expect to use live.
- Begin with a conservative output. Set the resolution and frame rate to match a mode in YouTube’s bitrate guidance, then configure the encoder and keyframe interval.
- Run a representative stream test. Include the kind of movement and audio that will occur in normal use; a brief successful launch does not establish round-the-clock reliability.
- Watch two indicators. Check OBS rendering and encoding statistics, and check YouTube’s stream health for upload or ingestion problems.
- Repeat under ordinary conditions. Test with the usual network use and the machine in its intended location, then decide whether to keep the chosen output or step down.
YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health. Its encoder workflow guide also describes the setup process. No short test can establish the continuous-duty lifespan of a particular refurbished PC.

Plan for YouTube sessions, not an endless single broadcast
YouTube says completed live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive threshold, not a promise that one stream can remain live indefinitely. A 24/7 channel therefore needs a plan for session duration and restarts, as well as reconnects and monitoring when the encoder or YouTube connection fails. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
For a local OBS setup, disable sleep and check whether automatic updates or restarts could interrupt transmission. Configure recovery or restart behavior carefully: an unattended restart can help after a failure, but it can also leave the stream stopped if OBS, the operating system, or YouTube does not reconnect as expected. Arrange a way to notice failures rather than treating “started once” as a 24/7 operating plan.
Upload, local power, and backup
Upload stability
Use Ethernet between the OptiPlex and router where practical. It can make the local link more consistent, but it cannot fix insufficient ISP upload capacity or an outage upstream. No India-specific provider or locality-level upload assessment is established here, so check the connection at the actual site and test it under normal conditions.

Power continuity
A UPS only provides resilience for the runtime it is sized to deliver. Include the desktop, router, and any modem required for connectivity in the load calculation; backing up the PC alone will not preserve the stream if the network equipment loses power. Dell India notes that India uses 220–240 V, but that does not establish an OptiPlex’s power draw or guarantee stream uptime. Work out the real cost of running it
A refurbished purchase price is only one part of the cost. Include any RAM or SSD work, a UPS and networking equipment, electricity, broadband, and the time or software required to supervise and recover the stream. No reliable used-market price or OptiPlex-specific measured wattage is established, so a model name cannot support a dependable monthly electricity estimate.
