Possibly, but the board’s specifications do not establish that a particular FFmpeg setup will run reliably 24/7. Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for the Zero 2 W, but that does not guarantee the installed FFmpeg build can use its hardware encoder or that the complete video, audio, power, and network setup will sustain a continuous stream. You need to verify the software path and test the actual workload over time.
This answer assumes you mean sending an FFmpeg-generated live stream to YouTube. Playing a YouTube stream on the Pi is a different task and is not covered by the outgoing-stream settings below.
What the Zero 2 W can—and cannot—tell you
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s 2025 product brief lists a Broadcom BCM2710A1 with four 1GHz Arm Cortex-A53 cores, 512MB LPDDR2 memory, 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and H.264 encoding at up to 1080p30. It also specifies a 5V DC, 2.5A input and an operating-temperature range of -20°C to +70°C. Those are board specifications, not evidence that a given power supply, enclosure, FFmpeg build, or workload will work continuously. The brief says the Zero 2 W will remain in production until at least January 2030. Raspberry Pi product documentation
Raspberry Pi’s launch announcement, dated 28 October 2021, also lists H.264 encoding at 1080p30. Its performance comparison with the original Zero came from a multi-threaded sysbench test; it is not an FFmpeg benchmark. Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W launch announcement

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key uncertainty is software compatibility: the board’s H.264 capability does not establish whether the FFmpeg package on your chosen operating system exposes a usable hardware encoder, or whether it works with your specific input and audio pipeline. No cited test establishes sustained performance or 24/7 reliability for this exact board/software combination.
Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS as streaming protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codec options, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube live encoder settings

| Target profile | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that the Zero 2 W can encode or upload either profile continuously. Start with a modest resolution and frame rate that your encoder path and upload connection can sustain; do not assume 1080p30 is the best choice just because it appears in the board’s H.264 specification. Choose a bitrate your connection can reliably deliver, and use the codec and audio format supported by your complete pipeline.
How to check whether your setup is viable
- Confirm what you intend to stream. This guidance is for sending a camera, media source, or other feed from FFmpeg to YouTube, not for watching YouTube on the Pi.
- Record the software environment. Note the operating-system release and FFmpeg build. Inspect the available encoders and confirm that the intended hardware encoder is actually exposed. Then test it with your real capture or media input; a listed encoder alone does not prove the whole pipeline works.
- Begin with conservative settings. Select a modest resolution and frame rate. Where your pipeline allows it, configure H.264, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), and a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and stable upload capacity.
- Run a private or unlisted YouTube test. Include representative movement and audio. Watch FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages, and monitor CPU and memory use, encoder errors, dropped frames, temperature, power stability, and Wi-Fi or upload behavior. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube live encoder settings
- Test for the schedule you actually need. A short successful session does not establish 24/7 reliability. Run a longer trial under representative conditions, check whether the Pi and stream remain stable, and deliberately verify recovery after a network interruption or process restart before leaving it unattended.
What affects continuous operation
Whether a stream stays up depends on the full system, not just the board’s headline encoding specification. Relevant factors include whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes the video, the source and audio handling, resolution, frame rate and bitrate, encoder compatibility, upload capacity and stability, power, thermal conditions, storage, and how the process reconnects or restarts. Treat these as things to validate in your own setup, not as evidence of a measured Zero 2 W performance limit.

A 2.4GHz Wi-Fi specification does not guarantee a stable upload at a chosen bitrate. Likewise, the board’s 5V, 2.5A input rating and operating-temperature range do not prove that your supply or enclosure is suitable for a continuous encoding workload. Check the actual installation while it is running.
Troubleshooting a test stream
- The hardware encoder is missing or will not start: the board capability may not be exposed through your installed FFmpeg build or selected pipeline. Check the available encoders for that exact build, confirm the required device and input path, and test a minimal encode before adding the YouTube output.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream buffers: check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce the target profile or bitrate and repeat a test; YouTube advises choosing a quality supported by a reliable upload connection.
- Frames drop or FFmpeg reports encoding errors: inspect the encoder output and system load. Re-test at a lower resolution or frame rate, and confirm whether your pipeline is encoding video or copying it and how audio is handled.
- The Pi becomes unstable during a long run: monitor temperature, power behavior, memory use, storage, and the source pipeline over a longer trial. The published board specifications do not identify a guaranteed 24/7 configuration.
- The stream does not resume after a network interruption: test reconnect and process-restart behavior before relying on unattended operation. Confirm recovery in YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming that an FFmpeg process restart restored the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, it handles any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
