A cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) could spend Bitcoin from a lost or inactive wallet if that wallet’s public key is already exposed on the blockchain. Shor’s algorithm could then derive the corresponding private key and produce a valid ECDSA or Schnorr signature. A wallet being unused does not, by itself, make it vulnerable.
No source establishes that a machine capable of this attack exists today, and there is no reliable arrival date. The practical issue is preparation: coins with exposed public keys may be attacked without the owner ever making another transaction, while coins in hashed-key outputs remain shielded until the public key is revealed.

What a quantum attack on Bitcoin would actually do
Bitcoin ownership is enforced by digital signatures
Bitcoin does not recognize a person, exchange account or hardware device as the owner of coins. It checks whether a transaction contains a valid signature for the private key authorized to spend a particular output. Traditional Bitcoin outputs use ECDSA-based signatures, while Taproot uses Schnorr signatures. In both cases, the public key lets the network verify a signature without revealing the private key.

A sufficiently large, fault-tolerant machine could use an exposed public key to calculate its private key. An attacker could then sign a normal Bitcoin transaction and broadcast it; nodes would see a mathematically valid signature rather than an obvious break-in.

A CRQC is not the same as today’s quantum hardware
The threat requires a CRQC: a fault-tolerant quantum computer with enough logical qubits, error correction and speed to run Shor’s algorithm at the required scale. Existing demonstrations and laboratory prototypes do not establish that Bitcoin can be attacked now. Google Quantum AI’s published resource discussions describe scenarios in which a fast-acting machine might recover a secret key in minutes, but that is a projection, not a report of a deployed theft.
Quantum computing would not recover every kind of lost Bitcoin
Quantum cryptanalysis is not a universal wallet-recovery service. If a public key has never been disclosed, there is no exposed key for Shor’s algorithm to process. If the private key is lost, a legitimate owner still cannot sign a migration transaction. Quantum computing changes who may be able to spend from an exposed output; it does not restore a seed phrase, decrypt an unrelated backup or prove ownership.
Public-key exposure determines the attack surface
Bitcoin developer documentation explains that transaction participants reveal the public keys or addresses used in a transaction. The crucial distinction is whether an output stores a public key directly or stores a hash that is opened only when the owner spends.

| Output or address pattern | When the public key is visible | Quantum-risk implication |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-to-public-key (P2PK) | Immediately in the output | Exposed to a long-range, at-rest attack. An attacker can prepare a private-key calculation before broadcasting a theft transaction. |
| Unique P2PKH address | Normally when the output is first spent | Public key is hidden while the coins remain untouched. Once spent, the key is exposed; reusing the address leaves later receipts exposed as well. |
| Unique P2SH address | When the redeeming script is revealed during spending | Hashing reduces at-rest exposure until the script is opened, but it does not make a revealed key permanently safe. |
| P2WPKH and P2WSH | Until the spending transaction reveals the key or witness data | Protected from an at-rest attack while the public key remains hidden; the protection ends when spending discloses it. |
| Taproot outputs | The output commits the public key directly | Should be treated as publicly exposed in quantum-risk analyses, even if the address has never been spent. |
At-rest attacks versus a race after spending begins
An exposed key gives an attacker unlimited preparation time. The attacker can derive the private key in advance, monitor the blockchain and wait for a moment to broadcast a transaction that spends the coins. Dormant outputs with directly visible keys are therefore the most concerning: inactivity gives the owner no warning and gives the attacker no deadline.
A fresh hashed-key output creates a narrower window. The public key appears when the owner spends, so a quantum attacker would need to derive the private key and get a conflicting transaction confirmed during the period between disclosure and confirmation. That is still a serious future risk, but it is different from an at-rest attack that can be prepared years earlier.
Why lost and inactive wallets need separate answers
“Inactive” describes activity, not control. A wallet that has not moved coins for years may still be controlled by an owner who has the private key. “Lost” means the signing key is unavailable, so the owner cannot authorize a transfer to a safer output.

| Wallet condition | Public key status | What the owner can do before a CRQC | Future exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private key controlled | Hidden in a hashed-key output | Keep the key secure and migrate when Bitcoin supports a post-quantum destination. | No at-rest exposure until the key is revealed by spending. |
| Private key controlled | Already exposed | Move the coins to a supported safer output before a CRQC exists. | Attacker could prepare a theft in advance once the required machine appears. |
| Private key lost | Hidden in a hashed-key output | No migration is possible without recovering the key. | Not at-rest targetable while the key remains hidden, but the funds are already inaccessible to the owner. |
| Private key lost | Already exposed | No owner-authorized action is available. | Potentially stealable by anyone who can derive the private key with a CRQC. |
Are Satoshi’s coins vulnerable?
The answer depends on the output type and whether each public key was exposed, not on the identity associated with the wallet. Early Bitcoin included pay-to-public-key outputs, whose public keys are visible from creation, so any dormant coins in that format would fit the at-rest risk described above. Other coins attributed to the same era may use hashed addresses and have a different exposure profile. A label such as “Satoshi’s coins” is not enough to determine vulnerability; each output must be classified by its on-chain script and key visibility.
Can a quantum computer steal coins from a dead person’s wallet?
If “dead wallet” means a wallet whose owner has died but whose key is still held by an heir, the heir can move controllable funds before a CRQC is available. If the key was never passed on and the public key is exposed, the coins could become an attractive target. The protocol cannot distinguish an attacker from an heir who possesses a valid private key.
Which Bitcoin addresses are safer against quantum attacks?
Use fresh hashed-key outputs where possible
Outputs that hash the public key, including P2PKH, P2SH, P2WPKH and P2WSH in their unspent state, avoid at-rest public-key exposure. This is an exposure reduction, not a permanent quantum-proof guarantee. Spending reveals the key, and address reuse can reveal it earlier than necessary.

Treat reused addresses as exposed
Once a P2PKH or similar address has been spent from, its public key is on-chain. Sending additional coins to that same address does not restore the hash protection. Wallets that generate a new receiving address for each payment reduce the number of outputs tied to a disclosed key.
Do not assume Taproot is post-quantum
Taproot improves Bitcoin’s functionality and privacy properties in several ways, but its public key is directly committed in the output. For a quantum-risk inventory, treat Taproot keys as exposed rather than as a quantum-resistant signature scheme.

- Inventory your outputs, not just your wallet brand. Identify which addresses still hold unspent coins and whether each output stores a public key or a hash. A wallet interface may show a modern account while the underlying coins have mixed script types.
- Stop address reuse. Use the wallet’s “receive” flow to generate a new address for each payment. Do not publish an extended public key or other public derivation data unless the use case requires it.
- Keep signing keys recoverable and under your control. Maintain secure, tested backups of seed material and any additional signing information. A lost private key cannot authorize a migration, regardless of how urgent the quantum threat becomes.
- Prefer hashed-key outputs for new receipts. They keep the public key concealed while the output remains unspent. This buys time against at-rest attacks, but it does not change Bitcoin’s underlying signature algorithm.
- Monitor Bitcoin protocol and wallet proposals. A quantum-safe migration requires a Bitcoin-compatible output type, transaction rules, wallet support and infrastructure that can validate the new signatures. Standards published by another organization are not automatically spendable on the Bitcoin network.
- Migrate controllable exposed funds when a supported path exists. Do not wait for public reports of the first CRQC attack. A migration transaction must be made while you still control the current private key and before an attacker can derive it.
What post-quantum standards mean for Bitcoin
NIST’s finalized signature standards
In 2024, NIST finalized FIPS 204, which specifies ML-DSA algorithms for generating and verifying digital signatures, and FIPS 205, which specifies SLH-DSA. NIST’s transition guidance places ECDSA-family signatures in the quantum-vulnerable category and directs systems toward post-quantum signatures.
Best Value
These standards provide building blocks for future systems. They do not alter Bitcoin’s consensus rules, convert existing private keys or give a wallet an immediate post-quantum send button. Bitcoin developers would need to define and deploy new output and signature rules, and wallets, exchanges, custodians and hardware devices would all need compatible support.
Why a conventional hardware wallet is not enough
A hardware wallet protects a private key from malware and unauthorized extraction, which remains valuable. It normally still signs with the algorithms accepted by Bitcoin today. If the corresponding public key is exposed, better key storage does not prevent a future CRQC from attacking the signature mathematics. Quantum resistance depends on the protocol and signature scheme, not merely on where the existing key is stored.
When could this happen?
No authoritative source provides a consensus date for a CRQC. Estimates vary because they depend on error rates, logical-qubit requirements, error-correction overhead, gate speeds and engineering progress. A projected ability to recover a key in minutes describes what a future machine might do after it exists; it does not establish when that machine will be available.
Recommended Free Tools
Planning should therefore use a capability threshold rather than a calendar prediction. Funds with exposed public keys need a migration plan before a CRQC is demonstrated publicly, because an attacker could have prepared the key calculation privately. Funds in hashed-key outputs have more protection while unspent, but their owners still need a way to move them before spending discloses the key.
A practical decision framework
Evaluate every significant holding on three axes:
- Public-key exposure: Is the key directly visible in the output, or still hidden behind a hash?
- Private-key control: Can you currently sign a transaction, including access to backups and any required passphrase?
- Migration readiness: Does the Bitcoin protocol and your wallet support a post-quantum destination, or is only a conventional output available?
An exposed key plus a lost private key is the highest-risk combination: no owner can migrate, and a future CRQC could potentially create a valid spend. A controlled exposed key should be moved as soon as a Bitcoin-supported post-quantum path is available. A controlled hashed-key output is less exposed at rest, so the priority is preserving key control and avoiding unnecessary disclosure. A lost hashed-key output is not currently quantum-stealable through the public-key route, but it remains inaccessible and could become exposed if its key is ever revealed.
Bottom line
A quantum computer cannot steal Bitcoin merely because a wallet is old, inactive or associated with a deceased owner. It would need a CRQC and a public key that the blockchain has already exposed. Old pay-to-public-key outputs, reused addresses and other directly revealed keys could be attacked with advance preparation. Fresh hashed-key outputs delay exposure until spending, while a genuinely lost private key prevents the owner from migrating at all. The sensible preparation is to avoid address reuse, preserve control of signing keys, track Bitcoin’s post-quantum proposals and move controllable funds before the required quantum capability arrives.
