A PS5 sends video through its HDMI OUT port, while Sony’s normal setup connects that port to an HDMI input on the television. If your TV has no HDMI socket, you need an active converter that accepts HDMI from the PS5 and outputs the exact signal your TV accepts. For a television with yellow, red and white composite sockets, that means an HDMI-to-composite RCA converter. The result can be usable for basic play, but it will not retain 4K, HDR or 120 Hz quality.
What the PS5 expects from a display
The PS5 has one standard video path: HDMI OUT. Sony’s documented installation procedure runs an HDMI cable from the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI IN port on a TV or monitor. That direct digital connection is the baseline Sony uses when diagnosing a blank screen, incorrect resolution or other picture problems.

A TV without HDMI cannot accept that cable on its own. The television may still have another video connector, but each alternative uses a different electrical signal and connector standard. A passive plug adapter cannot translate HDMI into those formats; the conversion must be performed by powered electronics.
First, identify the TV’s actual input
Look at the rear and side panels and write down the labels beside every input. Do not choose a converter based only on the connector’s shape. The converter’s output must match both the socket and the signal standard supported by the television.

| TV input | What the PS5 side must provide | What is established about this route |
|---|---|---|
| Composite RCA (yellow video, red/white audio) | HDMI input on the converter; composite RCA output | A documented workaround category. Cirago describes HDMI-to-composite conversion for analog TVs. |
| Component (red/green/blue video plus red/white audio) | An HDMI-to-component converter that explicitly supports the TV’s timing | Possible in principle, but the cited documentation does not verify a particular PS5-to-component model. |
| SCART | An HDMI converter with the correct SCART signal direction and regional mode | Requires a model-specific check; no universal PS5 compatibility is established. |
| DVI | HDMI-to-DVI connection or converter, with a separate audio route if DVI carries no sound | Digital conversion may work, but audio, HDCP and resolution support must be checked for the specific display. |
| Coaxial RF/antenna | An HDMI modulator that creates a TV-channel signal | Not covered by the cited product documentation; expect additional latency and very low resolution. |
| No usable video input | A different display | No adapter can create an input that the television does not have. |
The only conversion path specifically described in the available manufacturer material is HDMI to composite RCA. Treat other rows as compatibility questions requiring the converter and TV manuals, not as guaranteed solutions.
The practical option: HDMI to composite RCA
If the TV has yellow, red and white sockets, buy a powered HDMI-to-composite RCA converter. The direction matters:
- Input: HDMI from the PS5.
- Output: composite RCA video and usually left/right analog audio for the TV.
- Power: commonly supplied through USB or another external adapter; follow the unit’s manual.
Products labelled “AV to HDMI” generally perform the reverse job. They accept an old player’s RCA output and create HDMI for a modern screen. That is not what a PS5 with an HDMI output needs. A listing must explicitly say HDMI input to AV, composite or RCA output.

Checks to make before buying
- Supported HDMI input modes: Sony lists PS5 output modes of 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 2160p. A converter may accept only a subset, and an old TV may accept fewer still.
- Analog standard: confirm NTSC or PAL for the TV’s region. A mismatch can produce a rolling, monochrome or absent picture.
- HDCP handling: the converter should state what protected HDMI content it supports. A manufacturer claim of HDCP compatibility is not the same as an independent PS5 test.
- Audio routing: verify that the unit outputs stereo through the red and white RCA plugs, or plan a separate audio connection.
- Power requirements: an unpowered cable or tiny passive dongle cannot perform this conversion.
- Maximum output: composite is a low-resolution analog format. No converter can turn it into a genuine 4K, HDR or 120 Hz signal.
How to connect a PS5 to a composite-only TV
- Power everything off. Turn off the PS5 and television before making the connections.
- Connect the source. Plug the PS5’s HDMI cable into the converter’s port marked
HDMI IN,Inputor similar. Do not use a port marked HDMI OUT. - Connect video. Insert the yellow RCA plug into the TV’s yellow video socket and the converter’s composite video output.
- Connect audio. Insert the red and white plugs into the matching right and left audio sockets. If the TV combines these in a nonstandard way, consult its manual rather than forcing the plugs.
- Power the converter. Attach its USB lead or power adapter as specified. Some units appear connected but produce no picture until their power indicator is lit.
- Select the input. Turn on the TV and choose the labelled AV, Video, Composite or Line input. Selecting the antenna or an unused HDMI input will show no signal.
- Start with a supported PS5 mode. If the converter manual identifies a preferred input resolution, use that mode. If the console was previously configured for a 4K-only display and the converter cannot negotiate a signal, use the PS5’s Safe Mode to change the resolution.
What picture quality to expect
Composite RCA carries a low-resolution analog picture. Fine text, menus and small HUD elements can look soft or difficult to read, and color separation is weaker than with a direct digital connection. The conversion path cannot preserve the PS5’s 4K output, HDR metadata or 120 Hz capability. Sony’s description of HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120 Hz operation applies to compatible digital equipment, not to a composite television.
The PS5 may offer 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 2160p output choices, but those numbers describe what the console can generate under suitable conditions. The converter and television determine which signal is actually accepted. If a converter downscales to standard-definition composite, selecting 2160p does not improve the analog picture and may result in no image at all.
Analog conversion can also add processing delay. The amount varies by converter and is not established for a particular model here. For turn-based games it may be tolerable; for rhythm, fighting or competitive shooters, even small additional latency can be noticeable. A direct HDMI display remains the dependable choice.

Troubleshooting a blank or unstable picture
No signal message
- Confirm the RCA plugs are in the converter’s output sockets and the TV’s matching input, not in another device’s inputs.
- Check that the PS5 cable is in
HDMI INon the converter. An AV-to-HDMI unit, or a reversed connection, will not work. - Verify the converter has power and, if it has a switch or selector, that the correct mode is selected.
- Use the TV remote to select the exact AV or Composite input shown beside the sockets.
Picture rolls, is black and white, or has incorrect colors
Check the converter’s NTSC/PAL setting against the TV’s regional standard. A format mismatch can prevent synchronization or remove color. Also inspect each RCA plug: yellow is video, red is right audio and white is left audio. A loose or damaged yellow lead can look like a console failure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The converter worked with the menu but not a video app
Protected content and HDCP negotiation can behave differently from a simple console menu. Check the converter’s stated HDCP support and update the PS5 and converter firmware if the manufacturer provides updates. The available product information does not establish that every app, disc or streaming service will work through every converter.
The PS5 was previously set to an unsupported resolution
Connect the console directly to an HDMI display if possible and select a lower output mode, or enter PS5 Safe Mode and choose the resolution option. Sony’s normal troubleshooting advice is to connect the console directly to the screen’s HDMI port; using an analog converter is outside that baseline setup, so direct HDMI testing is the quickest way to separate a console problem from a conversion problem.

Other old-TV connectors need different solutions
Component video
Component uses separate red, green and blue video plugs and can carry higher-quality analog video than composite. It is not interchangeable with composite RCA. An HDMI-to-component converter must explicitly support the TV’s timing, audio arrangement and any required copy-protection handling. Do not assume that a composite converter can be rewired to component.
SCART
SCART televisions differ by region and may expect composite, RGB or another mode on particular pins. A converter must specify the correct signal direction and regional standard. A simple mechanical HDMI-to-SCART plug is not a signal converter.

DVI
DVI is digital and may accept video from HDMI with the right cable or adapter, but many DVI inputs do not carry audio. You may need to route sound from the converter, the PS5’s audio settings or a separate speaker system. Confirm HDCP and supported resolution before relying on this setup.

RF or antenna input
An RF modulator would have to turn HDMI into a television-channel signal. This is a specialized, lower-quality route with additional tuning and possible latency. It is not the same as an HDMI-to-composite converter and is not covered by the cited compatibility documentation.
When replacing the display is the better answer
Choose a display with a compatible HDMI input if you want the PS5’s intended image quality, reliable HDCP behavior, HDR, 4K resolution or 120 Hz play. It also removes one powered device, several cables and a potential source of lag. Keep the converter route for situations where basic gameplay on an existing television is more important than clarity and responsiveness.
Before spending money, compare the complete cost of a powered converter, a suitable power supply, replacement RCA cables and any audio equipment with the cost of a used or inexpensive HDMI-equipped monitor or TV. The latter may provide a simpler and more dependable setup even if its screen is smaller.

Bottom line for an old or CRT television
A PS5 can work with a non-HDMI TV only through active signal conversion. For yellow/red/white inputs, an HDMI-to-composite RCA converter is the relevant option, provided its input modes, regional standard, power, audio and HDCP behavior match the console and television. Expect a soft, standard-definition picture and no 4K, HDR or 120 Hz features. If the goal is full-quality or low-latency PS5 gaming, use a display with HDMI and connect the console directly.
