That finding does not show that choosing cheerful thoughts, repeating affirmations or taking a positivity course will prevent infection. The studies measured an emotional style; they did not randomly assign a mindset treatment.
What the strongest study found
Sheldon Cohen and colleagues studied 334 healthy adults aged 18 to 54. Participants repeatedly reported emotions such as happiness, pleasure and relaxation, along with negative emotions. Each person was exposed to one of two rhinoviruses, then quarantined while researchers checked for laboratory-confirmed infection and monitored cold symptoms.

The relationship followed a dose-response pattern: participants in the lowest positive-emotional-style group had an adjusted relative risk of 2.9 compared with those in the highest group. The calculation accounted for pre-challenge antibody levels, virus type, age, sex, education, race, body mass and season. In practical terms, the least positive group was nearly three times as likely as the most positive group to develop a verified cold under the study conditions.
The researchers’ conclusion was carefully worded: “The tendency to experience positive emotions was associated with greater resistance to objectively verifiable colds.” “Associated” matters. Because emotional style was observed rather than assigned, the result cannot prove that increasing positivity would produce the same protection.

What “positive mindset” means in this evidence
“Positive mindset” is a reader-friendly shorthand, not the study’s measured intervention. The researchers assessed a relatively stable tendency to experience positive emotions across repeated assessments. They did not test optimism training, affirmations, gratitude exercises, meditation, therapy, visualization or a self-help program.
That distinction also separates positive emotional style from optimism. A 2006 viral-challenge study found that positive emotional style predicted resistance after exposure to rhinovirus or influenza A even after accounting for optimism, extraversion, mastery, self-esteem, purpose and self-reported health. The constructs overlap, but the findings do not justify treating them as synonyms.

How stress fits the picture
A separate prospective viral-challenge study by Sheldon Cohen, David A. J. Tyrrell and Andrew P. Smith reached the opposite directional finding for psychological stress. Volunteers received nasal drops containing respiratory viruses—including rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus and coronavirus 229E—were quarantined and checked for infection and symptoms.

Across increasing stress levels, infection rates were approximately 74% to 90%, while clinical-cold incidence ranged from approximately 27% to 47%. The dose-response pattern suggests that greater psychological stress tracked with greater susceptibility, but it still does not establish that reducing stress alone will prevent a particular person’s cold.

What the studies did—and did not—measure
| Evidence feature | What was observed | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional factor | Repeated positive-emotion tendency | Not a randomly assigned positivity treatment |
| Exposure | Controlled administration of respiratory viruses | More precise than relying on everyday exposure memories |
| Outcome | Laboratory-verified infection and clinician-monitored symptoms | Stronger than self-reported “I felt a cold coming on” alone |
| Main comparison | Lowest versus highest positive-emotional-style tertile | Adjusted relative risk was 2.9 |
| Generalizability | Selected healthy adults under quarantine | Results may not transfer directly to children, older adults, people with chronic illness or ordinary community exposure |
Why a mood association might appear
The American Psychological Association’s 2003 summary noted that positive emotional style was linked with healthier behaviors and lower levels of epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol. Those differences, however, did not explain the observed illness association in the study. That leaves several plausible pathways—immune regulation, nervous-system activity, behavior and social context—but none was established as the cause.
Cold risk in daily life also depends on exposure dose, circulating viruses, prior immunity, sleep, age, underlying conditions and chance. A quarantine challenge controls some of those variables while making the setting unlike a normal commute, classroom or household.

What you can reasonably take from the evidence
Do not treat positivity as a shield
A cheerful outlook cannot guarantee that you will avoid a cold after contact with an infected person. The studies do not support stopping hand hygiene, ventilation, staying home when ill or other sensible infection-control measures.
Use stress reduction for its broader benefits
Relaxation, social connection, adequate sleep and professional help for persistent anxiety or stress may be worthwhile for mood and general health. The viral-challenge findings make a mind–immune connection plausible, but they do not establish a dose of meditation, a target mood score or a guaranteed reduction in colds.

Read “boosts immunity” claims cautiously
An intervention claim requires a randomized test showing that changing the intervention changes infection or illness outcomes. These studies instead show that a measured emotional tendency tracked with resistance. A product or course that promises cold prevention is making a stronger claim than this evidence supports unless it has its own appropriate clinical trial.
Bottom line for the sniffles question
Happy, relaxed and pleased people in these experiments were less likely to develop objectively verified colds, while higher psychological stress was linked to higher infection and clinical-cold rates. The adjusted relative risk of 2.9 is notable, and a later study found a similar association independent of optimism and several personality measures. Still, the evidence concerns an observed emotional style in healthy volunteers exposed under controlled conditions—not proof that deliberately thinking positively prevents infection. A positive outlook may be one part of a healthy life, but it is not a substitute for practical infection precautions or medical care.
