Yes, if the inflator is designed to operate from a 12V car outlet and the outlet can supply the current it needs. USB is less straightforward: a USB port on an inflator may be for charging its battery or powering a phone, not for running the compressor. Check the exact model’s manual before connecting it.
How a 12V car outlet powers an inflator
A plug-in 12V tire inflator draws power from the vehicle’s accessory socket through its cigarette-lighter-style plug. The inflator must specify 12V operation, and the vehicle outlet must support its current draw. For example, Portronics’ Vayu Core guide lists a 12V DC operating input and instructs users to start the vehicle and insert the plug into the car socket. Ring lists its RAC610 at 12V DC and up to 10A; Sealey specifies a maximum current of 10A for its CTI140. These are model specifications, not a rating for every car outlet.

Before use, check both the vehicle manual and inflator manual for outlet capacity, operating instructions, and whether the engine should be running. Do not assume that a socket in one vehicle can power an inflator just because another vehicle can.
What USB power means on an inflator
USB charging and USB compressor operation are different things. A USB port may recharge an inflator’s internal battery, or provide output to charge a small device. Neither use means USB can run the compressor.

Only treat USB as a compressor power source if the manual for that exact model explicitly says so. The cited examples do not establish USB compressor operation, but they also do not prove that no model supports it.
Choose between a plug-in and rechargeable inflator

Across either type, check pressure range and accuracy, valve adapters, hose and cable reach, and the precise role of every USB port. Maximum PSI alone does not tell you whether an inflator is compatible with your car or how quickly it will inflate a tyre.

Check pressure limits and cooling instructions
Set the tyre to the pressure recommended by the vehicle or tyre manufacturer. The inflator’s maximum pressure rating is not the target pressure for your tyre. Sealey’s CTI140 manual states: “Only inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.”

Model specifications are not universal guarantees
Manufacturer figures can help identify the kind of power a specific inflator supports, but they do not establish performance for every tyre or vehicle. Sealey specifies a CTI140 inflation time of 261 seconds from 0 to 30 psi for a 175/70/R13 tyre. For its MAC13DR, Sealey lists 241 seconds on the internal battery and 254 seconds on 12V for that tyre size and pressure change. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results or guarantees for other conditions.
Ring’s RAC610 product page lists 12V DC, 85W, and a 10A maximum, and states inflation to 35 PSI in under 4.5 minutes. Ring marks the RAC610 discontinued in September 2026 and names the RAC611 as an alternative; confirm current model details and availability before choosing one.

Compatibility checklist before inflating
- Read the inflator manual and confirm its compressor operating input: 12V outlet, internal battery, or both.
- Check the vehicle manual for the accessory outlet’s rating and any instructions about running the vehicle while using it.
- Compare the vehicle outlet capacity with the inflator’s required voltage and maximum current.
- Identify what each USB port does: battery charging input, device-charging output, or explicitly documented compressor power.
- Set the target pressure from the vehicle or tyre manufacturer’s recommendation, then follow the inflator’s duty-cycle and cooling directions.
