Yes—provided the power station can handle both the refrigerator’s normal AC demand and the compressor’s brief startup surge. Its watt-hour (Wh) capacity then determines how long it can help, while the refrigerator’s model, cycling pattern, room temperature, door openings and conversion losses determine the real runtime.
What has to match for the refrigerator to run
A refrigerator backup is a two-part sizing problem. The station must deliver enough instantaneous power, and it must store enough energy for the outage period you are trying to cover. A large battery with an undersized inverter can still fail when the compressor starts; a powerful inverter with a small battery may run the appliance but shut down quickly.

| Specification | What it means | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous AC output (watts) | The power the station can supply continuously through its AC inverter. | It must cover the refrigerator’s running demand. |
| Surge or peak AC output (watts) | The short-duration power available when a motor starts. | It must meet the compressor’s documented startup requirement. |
| Battery capacity (Wh) | The amount of stored energy available before the station needs recharging. | More Wh generally allows longer operation, but actual runtime varies with load and conditions. |
| Recharge method and rate | How you restore the battery during a prolonged outage. | Match the method to the expected outage; hours and days require different plans. |
Use the refrigerator’s own specifications whenever possible. A generic “refrigerator watts” figure cannot establish compatibility for every model because compressor designs and operating conditions differ.
Find your refrigerator’s running and startup requirements
Read the appliance information first
- Record the refrigerator’s make and exact model number from the data plate, owner’s manual or purchase documents.
- Look for running power, rated watts, amperage or energy information. If the manual lists a compressor starting or locked-rotor requirement, record that separately.
- Ask the refrigerator manufacturer for the startup requirement when the manual and nameplate do not state it. The surge figure is not safely inferred from the everyday running figure.
Do not assume that the label’s rated wattage is the compressor’s brief starting demand. The running number describes normal operation; the startup event can be materially higher.

Use the U.S. Department of Energy lookup when it applies
The U.S. Department of Energy’s refrigerator lookup accepts appliance type, brand, model and year for eligible consumer units. The database covers models over 10 cubic feet, and DOE cautions that not every model appears. A matching entry can help identify expected energy use, but it does not replace a manufacturer’s startup specification. The tool is also U.S.-focused, so readers elsewhere should check their local appliance documentation and electrical ratings.
Measure consumption only as an aid
A plug-in electricity meter can help estimate how much energy the refrigerator uses over a representative period. Treat that reading as an operating estimate, not proof that a station can start the compressor. The available guidance does not establish that a consumer meter captures the short startup surge, and a brief measurement may miss defrost cycles or changes in compressor duty.
Check the power station’s AC output
Continuous output must cover the running load
Compare the refrigerator’s running demand with the station’s continuous AC-output rating. Leave practical headroom rather than selecting a station whose continuous rating merely equals a label value. Other devices plugged into the station count toward the same limit, so lights, routers, freezers or medical equipment can reduce the margin available to the refrigerator.

When the compressor cycles on, the station’s inverter must supply the startup surge. Compare the refrigerator manufacturer’s documented requirement with the station’s surge or peak rating, including the duration for which the station can sustain that peak. A station advertising a high peak for only a very short interval may not match an appliance whose starting event lasts longer. If either side of the comparison is undocumented, contact the manufacturer before relying on the setup.

Check outlet and waveform requirements in the manuals
Use the station’s AC outlet and follow both manufacturers’ operating instructions. Confirm that the station is designed to power motor-driven appliances and that its protection system will not trip under the refrigerator’s startup profile. If the station shuts down when the compressor starts, disconnect other loads and recheck the documented continuous and surge ratings rather than repeatedly cycling the appliance.
Estimate runtime without making a false promise
The basic planning relationship is:
Ideal runtime in hours = usable battery capacity in Wh ÷ refrigerator power in watts.
That division is a starting point, not a prediction. The refrigerator does not draw its maximum running wattage continuously: the compressor cycles, defrost functions may operate, and door openings and room temperature alter the duty cycle. The station also loses energy converting DC battery power to AC, and its control electronics consume some power. Therefore, use the result as an upper-bound illustration and allow for real operating conditions.

Illustrative figures from consumer guidance
Consumer Reports gives a deliberately simplified example: a station claiming 3,600 Wh and 3,600 W would operate for one hour if it supplied a continuous 3,600 W load. That is arithmetic based on the stated ratings, not a refrigerator test and not a guarantee of usable runtime.

The same article describes a refrigerator-only illustration that assumes a 700 W draw with that 3,600 Wh station. Dividing 3,600 Wh by 700 W produces about 5.1 hours in ideal arithmetic. The assumption is not typical refrigerator consumption, and real operation will differ because of inverter losses, compressor cycling and the appliance’s actual demand. Do not use that figure as a promise for your household refrigerator.
Build a model-specific estimate
- Start with the station’s rated Wh capacity, then check whether the manufacturer specifies a usable or deliverable capacity rather than only a nominal battery figure.
- Use the refrigerator’s measured or manufacturer-provided energy use over a meaningful period. If you have only a running-watt figure, recognize that it may overstate or understate the average because the compressor cycles.
- Divide capacity by average refrigerator watts to obtain an ideal estimate.
- Reduce confidence in the estimate when the station’s conversion losses, the refrigerator’s duty cycle or the outage conditions are unknown.
- Repeat the calculation for the hours you need and verify that the station can be recharged if the outage lasts longer.
Because no single refrigerator model, station model or target outage duration is universal, there is no honest one-size-fits-all capacity recommendation.
Choose a station for the outage you actually expect
Short outages
A fully charged station can serve as a bridge during an outage lasting a few hours if its continuous and surge ratings match the refrigerator. Keep the load limited to essentials so the battery is not depleted by equipment that can wait.

Long outages
For an outage extending beyond the station’s calculated runtime, plan a recharge source or another backup method. Recharge options and recharge speed matter as much as battery size when utility power may be unavailable for a day or more. Consumer Reports quotes Paolo Fu, who leads its generator and portable power station testing, saying these products are “best for outages that last for hours, not days.” That is consumer guidance about the category, not a runtime guarantee for a particular station.

Before an outage, identify where the station can be recharged, whether that method remains available during a grid failure, and which loads must be disconnected to preserve energy for the refrigerator.
Step-by-step setup during an outage
- Verify the match before plugging in. Recheck the refrigerator’s running and startup requirements against the station’s continuous and surge AC ratings.
- Charge the station fully. Confirm the battery indicator and review the station manual for any temperature or placement limits.
- Disconnect nonessential loads. The refrigerator should not compete with heaters, cooking appliances or other high-demand equipment unless the station is explicitly sized for them.
- Connect the refrigerator to the station’s AC output. Follow the station’s instructions and watch for an overload or fault indication when the compressor starts.
- Observe the first compressor cycle. A successful start without a protection trip confirms only that this startup occurred; continue monitoring the station’s output and remaining capacity.
- Keep doors closed. Every opening adds warm air and can increase compressor operation, reducing the time the battery supports the appliance.
- Plan the next recharge early. If the display shows the battery falling faster than expected, arrange a recharge or move to the food-safety fallback before the station reaches shutdown.
Food safety if the station runs out
Power backup protects food only while the refrigerator remains cold. Ready.gov’s 2025 guidance says a closed refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours during an outage. It advises discarding refrigerated food that has been at 40°F or higher for more than four hours.
- Keep both refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
- Do not repeatedly open the door to check food; use the station’s status display and a thermometer if you have one.
- When the backup source is depleted, apply the time-and-temperature guidance rather than tasting food to judge safety.
The four-hour figure is approximate and applies to a closed refrigerator; it is not an extension of the power station’s runtime and should not be treated as permission to keep opening the door.
Common sizing mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by Wh alone
A high Wh number says how much energy is stored, not whether the inverter can start a compressor. Check continuous and surge output first, then capacity.

Choosing by continuous watts alone
A station may handle the running load yet trip at startup. Obtain the compressor’s surge requirement and compare it with the station’s peak specification and peak duration.
Using a generic runtime chart
Runtime charts often assume a fixed load. Refrigerator demand changes as the compressor cycles, defrost operates and the environment changes. Use model-specific information and label any arithmetic as an estimate.
Ignoring other devices
The station’s output and battery are shared. Add the watts of every connected device when checking the continuous limit and subtract their energy use when estimating refrigerator runtime.
Assuming a meter proves startup compatibility
A plug-in meter may describe energy use during its measurement window but may not record the instantaneous surge. It is supplementary evidence, not a replacement for manufacturer specifications.
Planning for an indefinite outage
A station that bridges several hours may not sustain a multiday outage without dependable recharging. Decide in advance how the battery will be restored and what food-safety action you will take if that fails.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you have the refrigerator’s exact make and model?
- Is its normal running demand documented?
- Is the compressor startup requirement documented or confirmed by the manufacturer?
- Does the station’s continuous AC rating exceed the running demand with margin for other loads?
- Does its surge rating meet the compressor’s startup requirement for the required duration?
- Is the station’s Wh capacity appropriate for the target outage, after allowing for cycling and conversion losses?
- Do you know how and where you will recharge it if the outage lasts longer?
- Will you keep the doors closed and follow the four-hour, 40°F food-safety guidance if backup power ends?
If any answer is unknown, the setup is not yet dependable enough to promise refrigeration. Resolve the missing specification with the appliance or station manufacturer before an outage, then test the complete pairing under normal conditions.
