Yes—but only if the power station can handle both the refrigerator’s normal running load and the compressor’s brief startup surge, while storing enough usable energy for the outage. A station’s watt-hour (Wh) capacity estimates how long it can supply energy. Its continuous and peak AC-watt ratings determine whether the refrigerator can run and start in the first place.
There is no universal runtime for “a refrigerator.” Models cycle differently, inverter losses reduce delivered energy, and door openings and room temperature change consumption. Measure your appliance when possible, then match those measurements to the station’s output and usable capacity.

What determines whether it will work?
Three separate specifications have to line up: the refrigerator’s running demand, its compressor’s starting demand, and the energy required over the intended outage.

Running watts are the continuous requirement
The rating plate or manual may list voltage, amperage, or watts. Compare that information with the power station’s continuous AC output. The station must be able to provide the refrigerator’s operating load without triggering overload protection.

A refrigerator does not draw its compressor’s rated running watts every minute. The compressor starts and stops, while controls, fans, lights, and defrost cycles add their own loads. The resulting average over an hour or a day is what matters for runtime.
Startup watts are a separate test
Compressor motors can briefly demand substantially more power than they use after starting. Westinghouse’s iGen1000s manual explains: “Peak wattage is the short burst of power needed to start electric motor-driven tools or appliances such as a refrigerator.” Its illustrative RV-refrigerator example lists approximately 180 W running and 600 W peak starting, and the manual says actual wattage should be verified. Those figures are an approximate manual example, not a specification for every household refrigerator.
Check the station’s peak, surge, or starting rating and its specified duration. A station can have plenty of Wh capacity yet fail instantly if its inverter cannot supply the compressor’s inrush current.

Wh is stored energy, not output power. A 2,000-Wh battery may run a small load for many hours, but it cannot compensate for an inverter whose AC output is too low to start the motor. Conversely, a high-output station with a small battery may start the refrigerator and then stop after a short period.
| Specification | Question it answers | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous AC watts | Can the station support the refrigerator while it is operating? | Station continuous output versus measured or rated running watts |
| Peak/surge watts | Can the inverter start the compressor? | Station peak rating versus the refrigerator’s measured or documented startup demand |
| Capacity in Wh | How much energy is stored? | Usable AC energy, not only the headline battery capacity |
| Voltage and frequency | Is the AC supply electrically appropriate? | Refrigerator requirements versus the station’s AC output for your region |
Measure the refrigerator before buying backup power
Manufacturer labels are useful for a first check, but a measurement is more reliable because it captures cycling and the actual installation.

- Record the electrical requirements. Photograph the rating plate and read the manual for voltage, frequency, rated current, and any listed locked-rotor or starting information. Do not assume a label from a similar model applies to yours.
- Measure energy over time. Use a properly rated plug-in energy meter between the wall outlet and the refrigerator. Record watt-hours over at least a representative day that includes normal cycling. Keep the refrigerator operating normally; do not repeatedly open the door just to create a test.
- Capture startup if the meter supports it. Some meters show only an averaged or delayed value and will miss a millisecond-scale surge. If the meter cannot capture inrush, treat the manufacturer’s peak figure or a qualified electrician’s measurement as a separate requirement.
- Include other loads. Add the router, medical equipment, freezer, lights, or chargers that would share the station. Their combined starting and running loads must remain within the inverter’s limits.
Perform the measurement in the conditions in which you expect an outage. A hot room, frequent door openings, an active ice maker, or a defrost cycle can raise the average consumption.
Match the numbers to a power station
Use this order: electrical compatibility first, startup capability second, and duration third.
1. Confirm AC compatibility
The station’s AC outlet must provide the refrigerator’s required voltage and frequency. A plug adapter that changes the physical shape does not change voltage or frequency. Follow the station and refrigerator manuals, and use grounded connections where required.
2. Check continuous output
Compare the refrigerator’s highest observed operating load—not merely its lowest idle reading—with the station’s continuous AC-watt rating. Leave practical headroom for controls, fans, and any other device connected to the station.
3. Check peak output and surge behavior
Compare the compressor’s startup demand with the station’s peak rating. Also read the fine print: some manufacturers specify peak output for only a few seconds, and overload protection may shut the inverter down if the surge lasts longer. A “pure sine wave” label can be desirable for motor loads, but it does not by itself prove that the station has enough surge capacity.

4. Compare usable energy
Use the station’s stated usable AC energy when available. If only nominal battery capacity is published, allow for conversion losses and a reserve; do not divide the nominal Wh number by the compressor’s running watts as though the compressor ran continuously.
How long will a station run your refrigerator?
The basic estimate is:
Approximate runtime (hours) = usable AC watt-hours ÷ measured average watts.
The average-watt figure should come from an energy measurement over a representative period. If you have only a short test, label the result as an assumption rather than a guarantee. Include the station’s own inverter consumption and every other connected load.
For an illustration only, suppose a station delivered 1,600 usable Wh and a meter showed an 80-W average refrigerator load. The arithmetic would be 1,600 ÷ 80, or about 20 hours before allowing for reserve and changing conditions. This is not a runtime claim for any particular refrigerator or station.
Actual runtime can be shorter because of:
- AC inverter and conversion losses;
- the refrigerator’s duty cycle, defrost heater, ice maker, and fans;
- high ambient temperature or poor ventilation around the appliance;
- frequent door opening and warm food being loaded;
- other equipment using the station;
- battery temperature, age, and the station’s low-battery shutdown setting.
For a planned outage, measure a full day of normal use, multiply the average by the expected hours, and add a reserve for uncertainty. Recharge time and whether solar or vehicle charging is available matter if the outage may last beyond one battery cycle.

Automatic UPS transfer: useful, but not universal
If the refrigerator must remain connected and switch over automatically when utility power fails, look for a station with a UPS or EPS transfer mode. Transfer time is model-specific, and a refrigerator may or may not tolerate an interruption without restarting.
The Westinghouse iGen1000s manual describes temporary UPS operation with approximately 30-millisecond switching for that model. BLUETTI’s FridgePower page advertises 10-millisecond automatic UPS switching. These are manufacturer-published claims for specific products, not an industry-wide standard or a guarantee that every refrigerator will ride through the transfer.
Test the exact refrigerator, cable arrangement, and station before an outage. Confirm that the station remains in the intended UPS mode, does not alarm or overload during a compressor start, and returns to charging after utility power is restored. A manual plug-in procedure may be safer than relying on automatic transfer if the refrigerator’s controls reset unpredictably.

Food safety still governs the outage
A battery backup can keep the compressor powered, but it does not replace temperature-based food-safety decisions. FoodSafety.gov states: “As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage.” Keep the door closed as much as possible. After four hours without power, discard refrigerated perishables such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers, and never taste food to decide whether it is safe.
The four-hour guidance describes food safety during an unpowered outage; it is not a promise that a powered refrigerator will run for four hours, nor does it guarantee safety if the interior has warmed. A refrigerator thermometer can help you observe temperature, but it does not override official discard guidance.
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance, updated December 17, 2024, gives separate holding times for a standalone freezer kept closed: approximately 48 hours when full and 24 hours when half full. Those figures are freezer temperature-holding guidance, not refrigerator runtime.

- Charge the station fully and confirm the battery-management system reports normal operation.
- Place it safely. Keep vents clear, protect it from moisture, and avoid extension cords or power strips that are not rated for the load.
- Connect only essential devices. Sum their running loads and consider which motors may start at the same time.
- Run a controlled test. Unplug utility power or use the station’s documented test procedure, then observe the refrigerator through at least one compressor start.
- Check behavior. Look for overload warnings, repeated restarts, unusual heat, or a station shutdown. Verify that charging resumes when utility power returns.
- Record results. Note measured average Wh, battery percentage, room temperature, and which other devices were connected. This gives you a realistic planning baseline.
Troubleshooting common failures
The station trips when the compressor starts
The inverter may be below the startup requirement, or another motor started simultaneously. Disconnect nonessential loads and retest. If the refrigerator still trips the station, use a model with a higher verified peak rating rather than assuming more battery capacity will solve the problem.
The refrigerator runs, but the battery empties too soon
Check the measured average Wh, not just the compressor’s nameplate watts. Look for defrost cycles, an ice maker, hot surroundings, door openings, and other connected equipment. Confirm whether the station’s published capacity is nominal or usable AC energy.
The refrigerator resets during transfer
Automatic transfer may be too slow for that appliance, or the station may not be in the correct UPS mode. Consult both manuals and test the exact setup. If the controls still reset, use a manual switchover procedure and monitor food temperature.
The station overheats or shuts down
Improve ventilation, reduce simultaneous loads, keep the station out of direct sun, and follow its temperature limits. Do not bypass thermal or overload protection.
A practical buying checklist
- Refrigerator voltage and frequency match the station’s AC output.
- Continuous AC output exceeds the measured operating load with headroom.
- Peak output and documented surge duration cover compressor startup.
- Usable Wh supports the measured average load for the planned outage.
- UPS transfer specifications meet your need, and the exact setup has been tested.
- Expansion batteries, solar inputs, vehicle charging, ports, warranty, and regional support fit your plan.
- Capacity and output are evaluated together; neither one alone proves suitability.
The reliable decision rule is simple: measure the refrigerator, match both running and startup power, calculate duration from usable energy and measured average consumption, and test the complete setup before the next outage.
