The design released near-infrared fluorescent molecules in acidic conditions, but the reported work did not establish that the probe can diagnose cancer in people or is available as a clinical product.
How the polymer probe was designed to work
The probe described by Chemistry World on 11 December 2013 used copolymers that were designed to dissociate below pH 6.9. Near-infrared fluorophores embedded in the polymer were comparatively dim while incorporated; when the polymer structure came apart, the released molecules fluoresced more brightly.

The design aimed to exploit acidity often found in solid tumours. The report contrasted blood at pH 7.4 with typical tumour values of pH 6.5–6.8. Those are the article’s stated comparison values, not a guarantee that every tumour or patient has the same pH.

The report says researchers tested the probes in mice with various tumours and used near-infrared fluorescence imaging to visualize them. It described fluorescence in tumour conditions as more than 100 times brighter than in blood conditions. That is a reported signal contrast in the 2013 report, not a measure of clinical sensitivity, accuracy, or the ability to detect cancer in people.
#1 Best Overall
In one lung tumour model, the researchers reportedly detected cancerous nodules as small as 1 mm³. This finding applies to that mouse model and the imaging experiments described; it does not establish a minimum detectable tumour size in patients.
What the findings do—and do not—establish about safety
The 2013 account reported no obvious signs of toxicity in the mice, citing weight loss and declining kidney function as examples investigators monitored. The team planned further toxicity studies. These observations are preliminary animal findings, not evidence that the probe is safe for people.

Why brighter imaging is not yet a clinical cancer test
A fluorescent signal can help reveal a tumour in an experimental imaging setup, but the report does not establish diagnostic performance in humans, human clinical-trial results, regulatory approval, or current clinical availability. It also does not verify what happened after the development and licensing plans described in 2013.

The report quoted surgical oncologist Gooitzen van Dam cautioning that “a return to normal pH in cancer tissue does not always indicate cell death, which might be a problem for clinical treatment monitoring.” In other words, a change in the probe’s signal would not by itself prove that treatment had killed cancer cells.

What is known about development and availability
Jinming Gao, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center biomedical engineer named in the report, said, “I think it’s industrialisable,” and described efforts to work with companies interested in negotiating a university licence. These were statements about plans in 2013, not confirmation of a subsequent licence, commercial product, or clinical use. The report supplies no verified current partner or product to buy.
The article identifies the underlying study as Y. Wang et al., Nature Materials (2013), DOI 10.1038/nmat3819. The study details and figures here are attributed to the 2013 news report’s account; its reporting alone cannot settle the probe’s later clinical, regulatory, or commercial status.
