Sometimes—but a phone that has fully shut down usually cannot send a live location through its normal cellular or internet connection. Depending on the model and settings, Apple’s Find My or Google’s Find Hub may still show a last-known location or a location relayed by nearby devices. That pin may be approximate or stale; it is not proof of where the phone is now.
What “off” means for phone tracking
People use “off” to describe several different states, and the distinction matters:

- Online and powered: The phone can report a current location if the relevant location service is enabled and it has a connection.
- Offline but powered: It cannot report through a normal internet connection, but a service may show a stored last-known location or receive a location report through nearby devices.
- Fully shut down: Most phones cannot continuously transmit their location. Some supported models can remain findable for a limited time through built-in offline-finding features, if the necessary settings were enabled beforehand.
- Battery depleted: The phone cannot keep reporting a live location. A recent or relayed report may still appear, depending on the device and service.
These are different from location sharing being disabled. The available official documentation does not establish that every phone, app, carrier, or investigator can locate every powered-off device.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat an iPhone’s Find My location can show
Apple says Find My must be turned on before the device is lost. Find My can display a device’s current or last-known location. Apple also describes an offline-finding system in which nearby Apple devices can detect a missing device and relay an encrypted location report. The owner may see an approximate location and when it was detected; an offline report does not mean the missing iPhone is actively transmitting over cellular or Wi-Fi.

Whether an iPhone can be found after shutdown depends on the device and its settings. Apple’s documentation does not support a blanket claim that every iPhone remains findable after a full shutdown.
When Google Find Hub can locate an Android phone
Google says supported devices, including the Pixel 8 series, can be located for several hours after shutdown through the Find Hub network. This requires offline finding to be set to one of the network options, with Bluetooth and Location enabled when the phone shut down. The capability and settings are model-dependent, so do not assume every Android phone has it.

Google also describes encrypted recent locations and offline finding through its network. A report from that network is not the same as a live location sent by a connected phone. Check the timestamp and treat an older or offline report as approximate.
How to check a missing phone’s location
- Open Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. Sign in to the account associated with the missing device and select the phone.
- Check the report time and status. A last-known or offline-network location may describe where the phone was earlier, not where it is now.
- Use the service’s lost-device controls. If you suspect theft, use the platform’s official options to secure the device and account, and contact local authorities as appropriate.
For a phone you still have, check that its lost-device and offline-finding features are enabled before it goes missing. Apple requires Find My to be set up in advance; Google’s offline-finding behavior also depends on settings and device support.

Why a location pin may not be current
A map pin can represent a current report from a connected phone, a stored last-known location, or an approximate location relayed by nearby devices. Read the timestamp and the service’s status information before acting on it. A report’s presence does not establish that the phone is still at that spot.
Battery level, time since shutdown, model support, prior settings, and whether nearby devices can contribute to offline finding all affect what appears. The available guidance does not establish universal tracking capability or a guaranteed update interval.

What this does—and does not—say about carriers or authorities
Consumer-facing Find My and Find Hub features do not answer whether a carrier retains historical location records or whether an agency can obtain location data in a particular case. Those questions depend on the circumstances and jurisdiction. Do not treat a consumer map pin as evidence of what a carrier or law-enforcement agency can access.

Unwanted-tracking alerts for an AirTag, AirPods, a Find My network accessory, or a compatible Bluetooth tracker concern a separate device—not whether a powered-off phone can be located. If you receive an alert and feel at risk, Apple advises going to a safe public place and contacting law enforcement.
