Can a Peanut-Shaped 3D Print Make Mixed Cables Easier to Use?

A small, peanut-shaped 3D-printed strap can make a frequently opened box of mixed cables easier to use. Instead of wrapping each lead with a rubber band or fastening a hook-and-loop tie, you bunch the cable into a loop and slide the rigid strap over it in one motion. How-To Geek writer Joe Fedewa says that simple action stopped his microUSB, USB-C, HDMI, laptop-charger and proprietary cables from becoming one tangled mass.

The idea is practical, but the evidence is personal experience rather than a controlled comparison. The headline’s “$0.05” is also an unverified figure: the available article text does not state the filament type, print settings, filament weight, printer, electricity cost or calculation. Treat the strap as a clever low-material concept, not a guaranteed five-cent purchase for every printer owner.

The problem is not storage; it is repeated access

A cable box behaves differently from a container that is opened once a year. When you reach into it regularly, cables are pulled out at different angles, dropped back in without their restraints and dragged across one another. A box containing several connector types is especially prone to this: older microUSB leads sit beside USB-C cables, HDMI cords, laptop chargers and proprietary cables with different lengths and stiffnesses.

Fedewa describes exactly that situation. He says a single cable could become attached to the rest of the contents, so pulling one out sometimes brought the whole box with it. The solution therefore has to be quick enough that you will actually use it every time you return a cable. A tie that works perfectly but takes several fiddly motions is likely to be abandoned after the first few uses.

What the 3D-printed strap does

The final design is a peanut-shaped cable “strap.” You gather a cable into a loop, then slide the strap over the bundled section. Removing it is the same basic action in reverse. There is no separate clasp to close, no second piece to align and no small part that must be kept with the cable.

“The great thing about these straps is that they go on in one smooth motion.”

— Joe Fedewa, How-To Geek writer

Fedewa describes the physical routine this way:

“I simply bunch up the cable in my hand and slide on the strap.”

— Joe Fedewa, How-To Geek writer

That is the entire usability argument. The strap is not intended to route cables under a desk, label a patch panel or replace a storage case. It is a reusable restraint for loose leads in a box that is opened often.

Why rubber bands and hook-and-loop ties were not ideal here

Rubber bands

Rubber bands are cheap and immediately available, but Fedewa reports two recurring annoyances in this use case: they could tangle with other cables or break. They also need to be stretched around the bundle, and a snapped band can leave a cable loose in the box. A band that has been removed while using a cable must then be found and put back around it.

Hook-and-loop straps

Hook-and-loop ties avoid some of the brittleness of rubber, but Fedewa found them annoying to put back on after use. The tie has to be wrapped, aligned and fastened each time. That extra handling matters when the cable is being returned quickly to a crowded box.

These are the author’s observations, not measured failure rates or a laboratory durability test. A rubber band or hook-and-loop strap may be the better choice for another box, cable shape or access pattern.

How the alternative designs compare

Before settling on the peanut profile, Fedewa looked at several 3D-printable approaches on MakerWorld. His selection criteria were practical: how quickly the restraint could be fitted and removed, whether it had parts that could be lost, and whether flexible or moving features might wear out.

Design approach How it works Concern reported by the author Fit for a frequently opened cable box
Flexible clip with a clasp A flexible body closes around the bundled cable. The clasp could depend on long-term flexibility and might wear with repeated use. Potentially convenient, but the moving closure introduces a durability question.
Two-piece ratcheting clip Two printed components engage to hold the cable. One component could be separated from the cable and lost. Less attractive when the box is opened often and small parts are easy to misplace.
Elongated S- or C-shaped clip The cable is fed through a curved, open-sided profile. In his use, it felt more cumbersome than a rubber band. Usable in principle, but not as quick for his routine.
Peanut-shaped strap The bundled cable is slid through the opening in one motion. No objective durability result or dimensional specification is provided. Chosen because the author found it simplest to put on and remove.

The table reflects qualitative observations from one writer. It does not prove that the peanut shape lasts longer, costs less or works better for every cable.

What “$0.05” does—and does not—tell you

The $0.05 number comes from the 2026 headline, not from a cost breakdown in the available article text. There is no stated filament mass, spool price, electricity estimate, printer model, layer setting or print failure allowance. Consequently, you cannot use five cents as a universal per-strap price.

Your material cost depends on the amount of filament in the particular model and the price you paid for the spool. Electricity, machine depreciation, failed prints and the time spent designing or slicing it add further costs if you are calculating the full cost of ownership. A strap can still be economical when printed from leftover filament, but that is a different claim from proving that every copy costs exactly $0.05.

How to use the concept with your own cables

The operation is deliberately uncomplicated. Once you have a suitable model printed, use this routine:

  1. Choose the cable. Pull out one lead from the box without disturbing the others more than necessary.
  2. Make a loose loop. Bunch the cable in your hand. Do not create a tight bend that could stress a connector, a strain relief or a permanently attached power lead.
  3. Slide on the strap. Pass the bundled section through the peanut-shaped opening in one smooth movement.
  4. Return the bundle. Place the restrained cable back in the box with its connector visible if that helps you identify it later.
  5. Remove it before use. Slide the strap off when you need the full cable length, and keep the strap with the cable rather than dropping it into the box.

The advantage is behavioral: fitting and removing the restraint should be easy enough to become part of your normal routine. If you have to reopen a clasp, align two parts or search for a loose component, the design has lost the reason for choosing it.

What you need before printing

The source description does not provide a downloadable model, dimensions, filament specification, printer, slicer profile or exact settings. Those omissions matter because cable bundles vary widely. A thin charging lead and a thick laptop power cable do not need the same opening, and a one-size strap may be loose on one cable and difficult to slide over another.

Use the concept as a design brief rather than assuming an unspecified file will fit your box:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measure or estimate the diameter of the cable bundle you actually plan to restrain.
  • Decide whether one strap should serve one cable or a small group of similar cables.
  • Leave enough clearance for the strap to slide over the loop without forcing the cable into a sharp bend.
  • Keep the profile compact enough that restrained cables still fit in the box.
  • Avoid a closure that relies on a thin flexible hinge or a separate piece if repeated access and loss prevention are priorities.

For material, use a filament that your printer is already configured to handle and that produces a slightly resilient part suitable for sliding over a bundle. The available source does not identify a preferred polymer, so selecting a specific material here would be speculation. Follow the filament maker’s temperature and handling guidance rather than copying an invented profile.

Designing or selecting a model

Start with the opening, not the outside outline

The important dimension is the passage through which the bundled cable travels. A peanut outline can be narrow in the middle and wider at the ends, but the opening must accept the largest bundle you intend to use. If it is too tight, fitting the strap becomes the same kind of chore the design is supposed to eliminate. If it is too loose, the strap may slide off when the cable is lifted from the box.

Keep the restraint in one piece

The author’s objection to a two-piece ratcheting design was the possibility of losing one component. A one-piece strap stays attached to the cable when removed, reducing the chance that a small part disappears among the contents of the box.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Prefer simple motion over complicated retention

The clasp and S- or C-shaped concepts illustrate a trade-off. A mechanism can hold a cable securely, yet still be unpleasant if it needs several actions. For this use case, an open profile that slides on and off quickly is the defining feature, provided it does not fall off during ordinary handling.

Testing a first print without overstating the result

Make a small trial with the cable that causes the most trouble in your box. Check the fit by hand before printing a large batch. The strap should slide over a relaxed loop, remain attached when you lift the bundled cable and come off without scraping the connector or requiring excessive force.

  • Open and close the restraint repeatedly to check whether the edges become uncomfortable or the part shows visible cracking.
  • Lift the bundle by the cable jacket, not by a connector, to see whether the strap stays in place.
  • Put the restrained cable back into the box and remove neighboring cables to check whether the shape catches on them.
  • Try the routine with the cable in the state you normally store it; a design that works on an empty desk may be awkward inside a full box.

These checks are practical fit checks, not a durability study. The source does not report a measured cycle count, load rating or long-term result, so do not treat a successful first impression as proof that the strap will never wear out.

Common failure modes and adjustments

The strap is hard to slide on

The opening may be too small for the loop, or the loop may be bundled too tightly. Make a looser loop first. If the problem remains, choose or redesign the model with more clearance rather than forcing the cable through a rigid part.

The strap falls off

An opening that is oversized for the cable bundle may not retain it during handling. Use a closer-fitting model for that cable or reserve the strap for a thicker bundle. Do not compensate by sharply bending the cable to make it fill the opening.

The strap catches on neighboring cables

Inspect the outside edges and the way the box is packed. A protruding feature or an overly large profile can snag adjacent leads. A smooth, compact outline is more suitable for a crowded box than a long clip with an exposed hook.

A flexible feature cracks or loses its spring

Repeated flexing can eventually affect a clasp-style design. That is one reason Fedewa was wary of a closure that depended on long-term flexibility. If a part shows whitening, cracking or permanent deformation, retire it rather than trusting it to hold a cable.

A small part goes missing

A two-piece design creates this risk by definition. Keep the restraint physically attached to the cable, or choose a one-piece profile so there is no separate component to search for.

Where this solution makes sense—and where it does not

This approach fits a drawer or box of loose, frequently accessed leads. It is particularly useful when the contents are a mixture of cable types and you want to preserve the convenience of tossing a cable back after use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a complete cable-management system. It does not label connectors, separate power from data cables, route wires across a desk, protect a cable from crushing or replace a case with individual compartments. If the main problem is identifying the right lead, labels or dedicated compartments address that problem more directly. If the main problem is a cable that must remain connected and routed, a desk-mounted guide is a different tool.

What the source establishes, and what remains unknown

The reported result is clear: one writer found a one-piece, peanut-shaped strap faster and less annoying to use than the restraints he had tried in his cable box. The design uses little filament and was intended to print quickly, according to his description.

Several details are not established: the strap’s dimensions, material, printer, slicer settings, filament quantity, electricity use, durability, downloadable model and the arithmetic behind the $0.05 headline. There is also no independent comparison showing that it outperforms rubber bands or hook-and-loop ties for other users. Those boundaries are important when deciding whether to copy the idea.

A sensible decision rule

Print or design a strap if your main complaint is the few seconds of effort required to restrain a cable every time it goes back into the box, and if you already have access to a printer. Start with one cable and judge the result by your own handling routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay with rubber bands or hook-and-loop ties if they are already quick for you, if your cables are rarely accessed, or if you do not want to design and tune a model. The 3D print is an ergonomic refinement, not a universal replacement. Its value comes from removing a small recurring annoyance, and that value depends on how often you open the box and how well the printed opening matches your bundles.
