Yes—but 128 GB is a capacity figure, not a speed guarantee. A suitably designed mini PC can run local language models ranging from small 1B models to some models with more than 100 billion total parameters. Whether a particular model fits, and how responsive it feels, depends on the machine’s usable graphics memory, memory bandwidth, quantization, context length, inference runtime, drivers and the memory left for the operating system.
The most important distinction is architecture. A mini PC with fast unified memory may let its integrated GPU draw from a large shared pool. A conventional PC may have 128 GB of system RAM but a much smaller graphics-memory limit, while a discrete-GPU system uses separate VRAM. Compare the complete memory and software design—not the RAM number on the box.

What 128 GB actually tells you
System memory determines how much data can be resident, but it does not tell you how much of that memory the inference backend can use or how quickly it can move model data. A local model needs space for its quantized weights, the key-value (KV) cache used by the conversation context, runtime workspaces and the operating system. Open applications, a browser with many tabs or a large document can reduce the headroom available to the model.

On a unified-memory design, the CPU and integrated GPU access the same physical pool. The MSI PRO MAX Edge AI+ specification lists 128 GB of LPDDR5X unified memory and permits up to 96 GB to be allocated to graphics. That is very different from saying that every program can use all 128 GB as VRAM. The product page identifies the allocation limit and the memory type; firmware settings, drivers and the selected runtime still determine what is usable in practice.

A conventional mini PC can advertise 128 GB of ordinary RAM while its integrated graphics backend exposes only a portion of it. Intel documents a 96 GB DDR5-5600 NUC 14 Pro test system in which the iGPU could use up to half of system RAM as graphics memory. Intel says that configuration ran a 70B Llama model, but the result belongs to that exact hardware, software stack and model setup, not to every 96 GB or 128 GB computer.
Discrete graphics change the equation again: model data must fit in VRAM for the fastest path, or be split between VRAM and system RAM when the runtime supports offloading. A 128 GB system-memory figure cannot substitute for a missing 24 GB of VRAM, and a large VRAM figure does not remove the need for system memory when the model, cache and applications spill beyond the card.
Examples of models that fit comfortably
Quantized file sizes illustrate the scale, but they are not complete memory requirements. A 2026 CEUR Workshop Proceedings paper using llama.cpp gives these approximate Q4 GGUF examples:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Model and format | Approximate model file | Paper’s comfortable minimum RAM | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, Q4 GGUF | Approximately 3.7 GB | 8 GB or more | Leaves room for a normal context and runtime on a suitable system; actual use varies. |
| Gemma-3-12B-it, Q4 GGUF | Approximately 6.7 GB | 12 GB or more | Quantization metadata, tokenizer and context settings change the total footprint. |
| Mistral-Small-3.1-24B-Instruct-2503, Q4 GGUF | Approximately 13.4 GB | 16 GB or more | A larger context or multimodal features can require substantially more working memory. |
The paper warns that these are approximations affected by tokenizer, vocabulary and quantization metadata. On a 128 GB machine, these small and medium models normally leave considerable capacity for long prompts, multiple sessions or other applications, provided the runtime can access the memory.

Larger models are possible, but parameter count alone is not a fit test. Quantization lowers weight storage, while context length and KV-cache precision can add many gigabytes. A model that technically loads may still be impractical if the operating system begins swapping or if most layers run on a slow path.

MSI PRO MAX Edge AI+
The compact configuration reviewed by TechRadar combines an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, 128 GB of unified memory and a 2 TB M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 SSD. The review describes local AI use and also notes practical ownership issues, including soldered memory and the machine’s connectivity. Because the memory is soldered, you should choose the capacity at purchase rather than assume a later RAM upgrade.
MSI’s current specification page is the authoritative place to check the 128 GB LPDDR5X option and the “up to 96 GB” graphics allocation. Firmware revisions, regional configurations and driver updates can change what is exposed to an application, so verify the exact model number before buying.

AMD’s Llama 4 Scout demonstration
AMD reports that a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system with 128 GB ran Meta’s Llama 4 Scout through llama.cpp. Scout has 109 billion total parameters, with 17 billion active for an inference step. AMD explicitly explains that all 109 billion parameters still have to be held in memory even though only 17 billion are active at a time.
In AMD’s described configuration, the demonstration reached up to 15 tokens per second and used a 256,000-token context with Flash Attention and an 8-bit KV cache. “Up to” is important: this is a vendor result tied to its quantization, context, software build and test conditions. It is not a guaranteed rate for every 128 GB mini PC, nor evidence that every 109B model will fit with the same settings.
Why loading a model does not mean it will be fast
Generation, or decode, is largely sequential. For each new token, the runtime repeatedly reads model weights and performs the required computation. Tom’s Hardware’s July 2026 comparison lists memory bandwidth of 256 GB/s for Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 273 GB/s for Nvidia GB10 and 546 GB/s for the tested M4 Max configuration. Those are platform-specific measurements and do not by themselves predict a result for your model, backend or context.

Compute resources, kernel quality, GPU offload, CPU overhead, thermal limits and quantization also matter. A mini PC may begin at a respectable speed and slow after sustained use if its cooling system cannot hold peak clocks. Noise and power limits are therefore performance specifications, not merely comfort details.

Prompt processing and token generation can behave differently. A long prompt may be processed quickly using substantial parallel compute, while generating the answer remains limited by sequential memory traffic. When comparing systems, request a tokens-per-second result for the exact model, quantization, context length and runtime you plan to use.
Three hardware approaches compared
| Approach | Memory available to the model | Strengths | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unified-memory mini PC | One pool shared by CPU and integrated GPU; a product may cap graphics allocation below total RAM. | Large models can be loaded without a separate graphics card; compact and power-efficient. | Soldered memory, bandwidth and cooling limits; software must support the integrated GPU backend. |
| Conventional mini PC with iGPU | System RAM is shared or reserved according to firmware and driver rules. | Standard memory and storage options; Intel documents an iGPU using up to half of system RAM in one 96 GB test system. | The usable graphics limit may be far below the installed RAM, and backend support varies by operating system. |
| Discrete-GPU desktop or workstation | Dedicated VRAM, plus system RAM for overflow and CPU work. | More mature acceleration options and potentially higher throughput for supported models. | More space, power, heat and noise; VRAM capacity can be the limiting factor. |
As a separate price-basis example, a 2026 Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe guide describes a dedicated system with 128 GB of system RAM, multiple lower-cost GPUs and 24 GB of VRAM for 20–40B text-only models at what it calls a comfortable speed. Its estimate is approximately €2,000 excluding VAT, based on September 2025 prices. Treat that as a dated example, not a current quotation or a universal cost for a multi-GPU build.
How to check a mini PC before you buy
- Identify the memory architecture. Confirm whether the specification says unified memory, shared system memory or separate VRAM. Find the maximum graphics allocation rather than assuming the full RAM number is available to the GPU.
- Choose the target model and quantization first. Record the model file format, quantization level and intended context length. A Q4 GGUF file and an 8-bit or unquantized version of the same model can have very different footprints.
- Budget the whole memory footprint. Add approximate weight storage, KV-cache space, runtime overhead and the operating system. Keep spare capacity for the applications you will run alongside inference; do not plan to occupy every gigabyte.
- Verify backend and driver support. Check that your operating system, graphics driver and chosen runtime—such as llama.cpp or a compatible graphical front end—support the processor’s GPU or acceleration API and the model format. A model can fit physically but fail to load if the backend is unsupported.
- Find a measured result for the same workload. Look for tokens per second using the same model, quantization, context and batch settings. Results from a different architecture or a vendor demonstration should be labeled as such.
- Check sustained operation. Review cooling, fan noise, power limits and the chassis volume. Run a long generation or repeated prompts rather than relying on a short peak benchmark.
- Confirm ownership constraints. Check SSD capacity and form factor, memory upgradeability, ports and power supply. Soldered memory means the initial capacity is effectively permanent.
Common failure modes and fixes
The model reports an out-of-memory error
Lower the context length, select a smaller quantization, close other applications and reduce the number of simultaneously loaded models. If the runtime supports CPU or system-memory offload, use it with the expectation that generation may slow. Also check whether the graphics allocation is capped below total RAM.

The model loads but generation is painfully slow
Confirm that the intended GPU backend is active rather than a CPU-only fallback. Compare memory bandwidth and thermal behavior, then test a shorter context and a smaller model. A successful load proves capacity, not adequate throughput.

Long conversations become slower or fail later
The KV cache grows with context. Set a realistic context limit, use a cache precision supported by your runtime and leave headroom for the operating system. AMD’s 256,000-token demonstration used Flash Attention and an 8-bit KV cache; those settings are specific to that software path and should not be assumed on another machine.
A driver or runtime cannot see the available memory
Update firmware and graphics drivers from the computer maker or silicon vendor, then verify the runtime’s documented support for that exact processor. Shared-memory accounting can differ between the operating system, driver and application, so inspect the runtime’s own memory report.
What to compare when several mini PCs look similar
- Usable model memory: total RAM, graphics allocation, discrete VRAM and the reserve needed for context and applications.
- Measured throughput: tokens per second for your exact model and settings, not a generic AI score.
- Software compatibility: operating-system support, driver maturity, acceleration backend and model-format support.
- Workload fit: text-only versus vision or multimodal models, context length and whether one or several users will generate simultaneously.
- Practical ownership: price at the time of purchase, SSD capacity, ports, power draw, acoustics, cooling and upgrade options.
A 128 GB unified-memory mini PC is compelling when compact size and a large shared pool matter, especially for quantized models that would exceed the VRAM of a small graphics card. A discrete-GPU system can be preferable when your priority is predictable acceleration and higher sustained throughput. Neither choice is automatically better: the runtime and the intended model decide the outcome.

A mini PC with 128 GB of RAM can run local AI models, including some very large ones, but only when its memory architecture, drivers and inference software expose that capacity effectively. Small and medium quantized models should be straightforward on a compatible system. Models in the 70B-to-100B-plus range are possible on selected unified-memory configurations, yet their speed depends heavily on bandwidth, quantization, context and cooling. Treat published demonstrations as configuration-specific evidence, and buy based on usable memory and measured performance for your model rather than the “128 GB” label alone.
