A Lenovo tablet can make ordinary cellular calls only when its exact model and regional configuration support cellular voice calling and a compatible carrier provisions service for it. A SIM slot or mobile-data connection alone does not guarantee phone calls. If cellular voice is unavailable, you may still be able to call through an app over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
What “using it as a phone” can mean
There are two different ways to make calls from a tablet:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Cellular voice calls: Regular calls using a carrier network and a SIM or supported cellular service. The tablet must support voice calling—not just LTE or 5G data—and the carrier must support it on that device.
- App-based calls: Voice or video calls made through an internet connection. These may work over Wi-Fi or mobile data, but the app’s availability, account requirements, and ability to call ordinary phone numbers depend on the service and region.
Lenovo’s general guidance is to check the tablet’s User Guide for LTE or VoLTE support. Lenovo also notes that voice-call functionality can vary with local operator networks and services. Lenovo’s Singapore tablet FAQ and Lenovo’s US tablet FAQ describe these options, but neither should be read as a guarantee for every model or carrier.
Why a SIM slot does not settle the question
Lenovo tablet families can include different configurations. For example, Lenovo’s Tab M9 specifications distinguish WWAN models with a nano-SIM and microSD slot from WLAN models with a microSD slot only. The reference also lists voice-call support as configuration-dependent and cautions that local operator and service conditions affect calling.

That example illustrates why a family name such as “Tab M9” is not enough to determine whether a particular tablet can make cellular calls. Likewise, LTE, 5G, WWAN, or a SIM slot may indicate mobile connectivity without proving that the device can place ordinary voice calls on your carrier.
How to check your Lenovo tablet
- Identify the precise model and region. Find the model number and the market variant, rather than relying only on the product-family name.
- Check Lenovo’s documentation. Look up the exact model in its User Guide or PSREF and confirm both a cellular/WWAN configuration and explicit support for voice calling or LTE voice/VoLTE. Lenovo’s FAQ directs owners to the User Guide for this check.
- Confirm with your carrier. Ask whether it supports voice calls on that exact tablet and whether your service or SIM must be provisioned in a particular way. Local network and service compatibility can affect whether calling works.
- Test before depending on it. If possible, verify an outgoing and incoming call with the intended carrier and service before treating the tablet as your primary phone.
If cellular voice calling is not supported
You can use an internet calling app if it supports your contacts and the features you need. Lenovo names Skype, WhatsApp, and WeChat as examples of apps for voice or video calls when a tablet lacks SIM calling capability. App features and requirements vary by service and region; check the app’s current documentation, especially if you need to call regular phone numbers rather than other users of the same app.
