Can a Hot Bath Lower Blood Pressure More Than Exercise? What the Studies Found

No study in the available evidence directly shows that a hot bath lowers blood pressure more than a 30-minute workout. One 2025 study found that 40°C immersion after exercise improved some blood-pressure measures more than exercise followed by cooler water; a separate trial comparing heat therapy with aerobic training in adults with untreated hypertension found no blood-pressure effect from either intervention.

What the “bath versus workout” claim leaves out

The headline suggests a direct comparison between a bath alone and 30 minutes of exercise alone. That is not what the study behind the claim tested. Participants exercised for 30 minutes in both study conditions, then had either hot-water immersion or thermoneutral-water immersion. The finding therefore concerns the possible added effect of hot water after exercise—not whether a bath can outperform or replace a workout.

The distinction matters because blood pressure is not one single outcome. The studies below measured different types of pressure, over different time windows, in different groups of people.

What the three 2025 studies found

Hot water after exercise: added benefit on some measures

In a study published in The Journal of Physiology in 2025, physically inactive middle-aged adults completed 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise followed by immersion in 40°C water. They did this, on average, three times a week for eight weeks. The comparison group followed the same exercise routine, then immersed in 34°C thermoneutral water.

The hot-water condition produced greater reductions in diastolic blood pressure and mean arterial pressure, and improved brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, a measure of blood-vessel function. It did not produce additional improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, glucose, lipids or inflammatory markers. Because exercise was part of both conditions, the results do not establish the effect of a bath by itself. Read the study.

One-time immersion in people taking hypertension medication

A 2025 randomized crossover study involved 16 people with hypertension who were taking at least one antihypertensive medication. Participants completed four sessions: 20 minutes in 40°C water, 40 minutes in 40°C water, 40 minutes in 36.5°C water, and a seated control session.

Compared with the control session, 24-hour systolic blood pressure was 7 mm Hg lower after the 40-minute hot immersion, and 6 mm Hg lower after both the 20-minute hot immersion and the 40-minute thermoneutral immersion. These were acute results in a small, selected group; they do not show that bathing can replace medication, exercise or ongoing care. Read the study.

Heat therapy compared with exercise in untreated hypertension

A randomized clinical trial published in the Journal of Applied Physiology in 2025 tested 30 supervised sessions of heat therapy or aerobic exercise in adults with untreated hypertension. It reported no blood-pressure effect from either intervention. The available report summary does not give a numeric between-group estimate, so the result should not be expressed as a specific change in mm Hg. Read the study.

How to interpret the findings

Study Participants and protocol Comparison Reported blood-pressure finding
Post-exercise immersion, 2025 Physically inactive middle-aged adults; 30 minutes of moderate exercise followed by 40°C immersion, on average three times weekly for eight weeks Same exercise followed by 34°C immersion Greater reductions in diastolic and mean arterial pressure with hot water; no bath-alone comparison
Acute immersion, 2025 16 participants with hypertension taking at least one medication; single sessions of hot or thermoneutral immersion Seated control 24-hour systolic pressure was 7 mm Hg lower after 40 minutes at 40°C, and 6 mm Hg lower after 20 minutes at 40°C or 40 minutes at 36.5°C, versus control
Heat therapy versus exercise, 2025 Adults with untreated hypertension; 30 supervised sessions Heat therapy, aerobic exercise and study comparisons No blood-pressure effect reported for either intervention; numeric estimate not stated in the available report summary

These results cannot be combined into a single ranking. The first tested heat after exercise over eight weeks; the second measured a one-day response after individual immersion sessions in people already taking medication; the third tested repeated supervised interventions in people with untreated hypertension. Differences in population, protocol, comparator and measurement window mean that a benefit in one setting does not guarantee the same response in another.

Can a hot bath replace exercise or hypertension care?

No. These studies do not establish that a bath alone can replace exercise, prescribed medication or clinician-directed care. The post-exercise study included exercise in both conditions, while the acute study examined short-term readings in a small group taking medication. The trial in untreated hypertension found no blood-pressure effect from its heat or exercise interventions.
