Can a GeForce 8800 GT Run Crysis? Single-Card and SLI Results

Yes—the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB can run the original Crysis, but smooth play depends on keeping resolution and graphics quality in check. Two cards in SLI can improve average frame rates at moderate resolutions, but the gain varies by settings and test conditions; it is not a guaranteed route to smooth 60-fps play.

What did the historical tests measure?

GameSpot’s Sarju Shah published a Crysis hardware guide on November 13, 2007. It tested the game’s built-in GPU and CPU benchmarks, averaging three runs for each result. The test matrix included a 512MB GeForce 8800 GT, Windows XP, Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit, and NVIDIA ForceWare 169.04 and 169.09 drivers.

Those results are useful as period benchmarks, not as a promise of identical performance on every system. GameSpot used ForceWare 169.04 for most NVIDIA cards and 169.09 for the SLI setup, and noted that the versions differed in executable/driver behavior that affected performance.

How much faster was 8800 GT SLI?

ComputerBase’s published results are averages from a Direct3D 10 Crysis benchmark using 1× antialiasing and 16× anisotropic filtering. The table below preserves the reported figures; the CPU, operating system, driver, and patch details for these particular results are not stated in the available test summary.

Resolution One GeForce 8800 GT Two GeForce 8800 GTs in SLI Difference in reported average
1280×1024 28.9 fps 39.5 fps SLI +10.6 fps
1600×1200 20.9 fps 30.6 fps SLI +9.7 fps
2560×1600 3.1 fps 2.5 fps SLI −0.6 fps

The first two resolutions show a meaningful average-FPS increase in this particular test. At 2560×1600, both results are far too low for playable performance, and SLI is slower. These figures are specific to that Direct3D 10 benchmark and its listed settings; they are not a universal SLI multiplier or a guarantee of smooth frame pacing.

Do patch and graphics settings change the result?

Yes. TechSpot’s Steven Walton reported that, at 1440×900 with DirectX 9 and Medium quality, GeForce 8800 GT SLI rose from 40.4 fps to 45.4 fps after patch 1.1. This is a before-and-after patch comparison for SLI, not a single-card-versus-SLI result. TechSpot also found a larger SLI improvement at 1680×1050 after the patch; at 1920×1200 in that low-quality comparison, patched SLI remained slower than single-card configurations. The report does not provide the exact figures for those two comparisons here.

For a single card, GameSpot’s guidance indicates how demanding the upper presets were: even a GeForce 8800 GTX only just managed a playable result in its GPU benchmark at 1600×1200 with High quality. That makes High at high resolution an unrealistic target for a less powerful 8800 GT. Very High was exceptionally demanding for hardware of the period.

Settings to lower first

GameSpot identified shader, object, and shadow quality as settings with major performance effects. Lowering these is a more useful first step than assuming a second card will fix every slowdown.

  • NVIDIA SLI Technology allows two graphics cards to run simultaneously
  • Built for Microsoft Windows Vista
  • Shadows: Medium is a practical visual/performance compromise. Low disables shadows.
  • Shaders and objects: Reduce these if the game remains too slow after choosing a manageable resolution.
  • Resolution: Lower it before expecting High-quality play at a demanding resolution.

What else affected performance on a 2007-era PC?

CPU

GameSpot found that Crysis benefited from at least two CPU cores; single-core processors lagged considerably. Moving from dual-core to quad-core provided little additional benefit in its tests. That is a finding about the tested hardware and software generation, not a present-day processor recommendation.

Operating system and drivers

In GameSpot’s test generation, Windows XP performed best relative to the tested Vista editions. This should be read as a historical benchmark result, not a claim about current operating-system support. The guide’s ForceWare-version difference between most NVIDIA results and its SLI setup also means its figures are not a perfectly controlled single-card/SLI comparison.

How should you use these FPS figures?

Average FPS is a useful comparison, but it cannot establish that a game feels consistently smooth: averages can conceal dips and uneven frame pacing. When comparing results from different reviews or reproducing a period build, match the resolution, graphics preset, antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, API, patch, driver, CPU, and operating system as closely as possible. If those conditions differ or are not reported, treat the figures as directional rather than directly comparable.
