Recommended Free Tools
Yes, but only with layered controls. A free label, billing alert, or nominal budget does not automatically make a public cloud-AI demo safe. First establish whether your configuration is genuinely free or merely credited, then use an enforced provider limit where available and add application-side limits for requests, output, retries, and costly features. Isolate the demo, keep credentials server-side, and define a safe failure response before sharing the URL.
What “free” actually means for a cloud-AI demo
Cloud providers use “free” for several different arrangements. A model may have a provider-managed free tier with its own rate and quota limits; an account may have promotional credits; or the API may be fully billable after you attach a payment method or billing account. Those arrangements are not interchangeable.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Model eligibility: Free access can apply only to specified models, regions, accounts, or usage bands. A different model or feature can move the request into paid usage.
- Quota versus money: A request can be blocked by a rate or daily quota even when it would not cost money. Conversely, paid access can continue consuming billable units after a free quota is exhausted.
- Shared billing scope: Several projects or API keys may draw from one organization or billing account. A demo can therefore consume a boundary that also covers unrelated workloads.
- Credits are temporary: Promotional or prepaid balances can expire or run out. When they do, ordinary rates may apply unless an enforcement control stops requests.
Read the selected model’s current eligibility and quota documentation immediately before launch. Do not treat a general cloud welcome credit as proof that a particular AI API is free. For example, Google says accounts opened after March 2, 2026 cannot use its welcome credits for Gemini API or AI Studio usage; the applicable billing and tier rules still govern those calls (Google Gemini API billing documentation).
Alerts, budgets and hard stops are different controls
The most important distinction is whether a threshold merely tells you that spending has increased or actually causes API requests to fail. An alert is useful for intervention but cannot prevent traffic that arrives between the alert and your response.

| Control type | What happens at the threshold | Risk that remains |
|---|---|---|
| Notification or soft budget | Email, dashboard, or other notice; requests continue | Public traffic, bots, retries, and delayed attention can keep generating usage |
| Provider-enforced hard limit | Affected requests are rejected when tracked spend reaches the configured amount | Measurement and enforcement take time; recorded spend can slightly exceed the setting |
| Prepaid balance boundary | Requests stop when the balance reaches zero, according to the provider’s scope rules | All projects or keys sharing that billing account may stop together; propagation can lag |
| Application limit | Your server rejects or throttles requests before calling the provider | A bug, leaked credential, or alternate code path can bypass an incomplete implementation |
OpenAI states the distinction plainly: “Spend alerts send notifications without stopping API traffic. Hard spend limits can stop affected requests when tracked spend reaches the configured amount.” (OpenAI troubleshooting API usage and spend limits). Even with a hard limit, enforcement changes are not instantaneous, so a small overage is possible.
How the major provider controls behave
OpenAI API
OpenAI separates organization-approved usage limits from configurable project and organization spend controls. Spend alerts notify you while traffic continues. An enforced hard limit can return errors for affected requests when tracked spend reaches the configured amount, but the provider warns that enforcement is not instantaneous and the final recorded spend may slightly exceed the chosen amount (OpenAI spend limits; OpenAI troubleshooting API usage and spend limits).
Do not mistake a project’s monthly spend threshold for a shutoff. OpenAI’s project-management documentation describes that threshold as a soft spending limit for monitoring; requests continue after it is crossed (Managing projects in the API platform). If a demo must stop at a ceiling, verify that the hard-limit setting is configured and enforced, then test the resulting error path.

Google Gemini API and AI Studio
Gemini’s Free Tier covers only eligible models within their published free limits. Paid access is tied to billing status and tier, and usage history or cumulative billing can affect the account’s tier and associated limits (Gemini API billing; Gemini API rate limits).
Google’s Prepay option creates a different boundary from an alert: when the prepaid balance reaches zero, API keys in every project linked to that billing account stop working until credits are added. Keys do not have independent billing settings, and projects sharing the account inherit its usage tier and account-level caps (Gemini API billing). Use a dedicated billing account if stopping the demo must not interrupt other projects.
Google also documents an experimental Gemini API project spend cap. Its documentation says users remain subject to overages for around a ten-minute latency period while the cap takes effect (Gemini API billing). Separately, Google Cloud Billing spend-cap budgets can alert at 50%, 80%, and 100% of the target; when enforced, covered usage is paused for the remainder of the budget period unless manually lifted (Manage spend cap budgets). Treat the experimental cap’s delay as a design requirement, not an incidental detail.

AWS Free Tier
AWS automatically emails Free Tier alerts when usage exceeds 85% of applicable service limits. The console and Free Tier API provide monitoring, but the alert does not stop requests (Tracking your AWS Free Tier usage). Eligible credits may offset some charges beyond a free limit; after credits expire or are exhausted, additional usage is billed at standard rates. A public demo therefore needs its own request and feature ceilings even when Free Tier monitoring is enabled.

1. Create a separate billing and project boundary
Put the demo in a dedicated project, account, or billing boundary rather than a personal or production environment. Check whether the provider’s control is scoped to an organization, project, billing account, or key. Record which other workloads share that scope. On Gemini, for example, a zero prepaid balance affects every project linked to the same billing account.
2. Keep credentials off the client
Call the AI provider from a server you control. Never embed a secret API key in browser JavaScript, a mobile package, a public repository, or a page source that visitors can inspect. Restrict the credential and service permissions to the demo’s required models and operations. If a key has been exposed, revoke it and issue a replacement before continuing.

3. Choose a genuinely free configuration when it is sufficient
Confirm the exact model, account status, region, rate limits, and billing requirement. A provider’s general trial credit or a free cloud account does not establish that every AI model is free. Keep a record of the model and feature settings so a later model change does not silently alter billing.
4. Add notification thresholds below the stop point
Set alerts early enough to investigate while requests still work. For Google Cloud spend-cap budgets, the documented alert points are 50%, 80%, and 100%; for AWS Free Tier, the automatic threshold is 85%. These messages are response signals, not caps. On OpenAI, use alerts alongside an enforced hard limit rather than substituting a soft project threshold.

Use the lowest practical hard limit, prepaid balance, or spend-cap setting that the provider actually enforces. Verify its scope and latency. OpenAI hard-limit enforcement can slightly lag tracked spend; Google’s experimental Gemini project cap documents roughly ten minutes of overage latency. Plan for that possible consumption instead of setting a limit equal to the last cent you can afford.
Best Value
6. Put independent limits in your application
- Set per-user, per-IP, and global request quotas for a time window.
- Limit prompt and context size before sending the request.
- Set a maximum output-token or response-size value.
- Disable expensive tools, image generation, long-context modes, or multi-step agents unless the demo needs them.
- Cap concurrent jobs and queue length so a traffic spike cannot fan out into unlimited calls.
- Use bounded timeouts and a small, deliberate retry budget. Never retry every error indefinitely.
These controls reduce both accidental and abusive consumption, but they are engineering safeguards rather than vendor guarantees. Log the user, model, estimated units, response status, and rejection reason so you can identify a runaway path quickly without storing unnecessary prompt content.
7. Define the failure behavior
When the provider returns a quota, balance, or spend-limit error, stop calling it. Show a neutral message such as “The demo has reached its temporary usage limit; please try later.” Do not reveal keys, billing identifiers, internal error payloads, or a button that automatically retries. A cached example, reduced local response, or static explanation can keep the demonstration understandable without creating more billable traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a controlled pre-launch test
- Use the dedicated project and the exact production model and feature set.
- Send a small, known number of requests with representative prompt and output sizes.
- Confirm the provider dashboard records the activity under the intended project or billing account.
- Trigger your application quota with a test user and verify that no provider call is made after rejection.
- Exercise timeout, quota, balance, and spend-limit error handling with the provider’s documented test or controlled conditions; verify that retries stop.
- Check the billing dashboard after the test and again after changing a model, feature, tier, or linked billing account.
- Revoke any temporary test credentials and confirm the public client contains no secret.
After launch, inspect usage on a schedule that matches your exposure. A private classroom demo can tolerate a different review interval from a public link shared on social media. Recheck controls before every major audience increase because bots and repeated requests change the traffic pattern even when the code is unchanged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Assumption | Why it fails | Safer replacement |
|---|---|---|
| “The alert means billing stops.” | Alerts notify; traffic can continue while nobody responds. | Pair alerts with an enforced cap and application quotas. |
| “The project monthly limit is a hard ceiling.” | OpenAI documents its project threshold as soft. | Configure and verify the provider’s hard-limit feature. |
| “A free model makes every feature free.” | Eligibility is model- and quota-specific; paid tiers can share the same account. | Pin the eligible model and monitor the exact usage class. |
| “One key has its own independent Gemini budget.” | Billing-account status and linked projects determine behavior. | Use a dedicated billing account and understand shared scope. |
| “A welcome credit covers the API.” | Credits may exclude the API or expire. | Read the current API billing terms; do not budget against unverified credit. |
| “A browser-only prototype is harmless.” | Exposed keys can be copied and automated at someone else’s scale. | Proxy calls through a restricted server and rate-limit before the provider call. |
When is a free demo safe enough to share?
Share it publicly only when you can answer “yes” to all of these questions:
- Is the selected model and account arrangement genuinely free, or have you documented the exact paid boundary?
- Is the demo isolated from production and other projects that you cannot afford to interrupt?
- Are credentials server-side, restricted, rotatable, and absent from the client?
- Do you have an enforced provider control where one is available, with alerts set below it?
- Can your application stop new calls using per-user and global quotas, output limits, and bounded retries?
- Does the UI fail gracefully when quota, balance, or spend-limit errors occur?
- Have you checked usage after a controlled test and after every model, feature, tier, or billing-account change?
If any answer is “no,” keep the demo private or remove the billable path until the missing control is in place. No provider’s free-tier label eliminates all financial risk for an internet-facing application.
