Yes, a dishwasher can clean many oily stainless-steel kadhais and other Indian cookware—but the result depends on the machine, programme, loading, detergent and residue. Bosch and IFB advertise programmes or suitability for oily, masala-stained cookware; those are manufacturer claims, not proof that every kadhai or festive load will come out clean. Scrape off food rather than routinely pre-rinsing, check that each utensil is dishwasher-safe, and manually scrub burnt or sticky residue before loading.
How well does a dishwasher clean an oily kadhai?
Some India-market dishwashers are explicitly marketed for this job. Bosch describes its Intensive Kadhai programme as intended for oil, grease, tadka, burnt stains and masala. IFB says its dishwashers are suitable for oily, masala-stained kadhais, cookers and thalis. These claims make oily cookware a stated use case, but they do not guarantee results across all machines, loads or residues. No independent side-by-side test of oily-kadhai cleaning is established here.
For a kadhai with ordinary cooking oil and food residue, use an appropriate intensive programme if your model offers one, load the vessel so water can reach its surfaces, and use automatic dishwasher detergent. Burnt-on or sticky food is different: Bosch advises manually scrubbing that residue before loading for best results.
How to load oily cookware and festive utensils
- Scrape, rather than routinely pre-rinse. Remove large food remnants before loading. Bosch says, “All you have to do is scrape off the leftovers from the dishes and load them in.” IFB likewise says pre-rinsing is not necessary.
- Check the machine manual for placement. Put a large kadhai or pot where the manual allows, and make sure it does not block the spray arms. Avoid nesting utensils; water needs a clear path to the surfaces.
- Leave room for the rest of the load. A large vessel may fit but occupy much of the lower rack. Place-setting capacity alone cannot tell you whether your particular kadhai will fit alongside festive dishes.
- Scrub burnt or sticky patches by hand. Bosch specifically recommends this for best results before the item goes into the dishwasher.
- Maintain the machine as instructed. Clean filters and spray arms according to its manual. IFB recommends weekly filter and spray-arm cleaning.
Fit depends on the exact rack design. A Bosch model specification lists an adjustable upper rack, while a Bosch brochure from June 2021 illustrates an internally tested 14-place load containing a 5.5-litre kadhai and a 5-litre pressure cooker. The brochure specifies dishwasher-safe utensils; that illustration is not a fit guarantee for other models or every festive load.

Which festive utensils are dishwasher-safe?
Material and finish matter as much as the food on the utensil. Bosch lists stainless steel, glass, ceramic and porcelain as suitable examples, and warns about gold, silver, aluminium, brass, copper, bronze and acrylic. IFB also cautions against wood, cast iron, delicate crystal and non-stick cookware unless it is marked dishwasher-safe.
These lists are guidance, not a substitute for checking the item itself. Look for the utensil maker’s dishwasher-safe marking and follow the appliance manual. Be especially cautious with plated or decorated pieces, delicate finishes and non-stick coatings; a festive serving item may be more vulnerable than an everyday stainless-steel pot.

Which programme, detergent and cycle time should you expect?
Choose a programme intended for heavily soiled cookware when the load includes greasy kadhais or pots. A quick programme may be aimed at lightly soiled dishes, so its short duration is not evidence that it will handle burnt masala residue. Programme names and durations vary by model; use the manual for your machine.

Use products made for automatic dishwashers, not hand-wash liquid. Bosch recommends automatic dishwasher detergent and identifies salt and rinse aid as part of its care kit. IFB recommends specialised dishwasher products and notes that salt is especially relevant in hard-water conditions. Follow your machine’s instructions and account for local water conditions rather than assuming every model needs identical consumables.

What to check before buying for Indian cooking
- Programme: Look for an intensive or high-temperature option intended for greasy cookware; the name alone does not prove cleaning performance.
- Rack fit: Measure your largest kadhai and check lower-rack clearance and loading guidance. Place settings do not establish that a particular vessel fits.
- Materials: Check compatibility for the utensils you actually use, especially non-stick, plated, decorative, aluminium, copper, brass, bronze, silver and wooden pieces.
- Consumables: Confirm detergent requirements and whether salt or rinse aid is recommended for the machine and your water.
- Cycle duration: Compare the intensive programme you will use for cookware, not just the shortest advertised wash.
- Evidence: Treat brand descriptions and load illustrations as manufacturer information. They are not independent comparative tests.
