A decade-old PC can be repurposed as a NAS, but the title’s claim that it “beats a Synology” cannot be judged without the PC’s parts, the Synology model, a matched workload and disclosed results. “Beats” could mean faster file transfers, better application performance, lower total cost, greater flexibility or something else. Those are different outcomes, and none is established by the title alone.
What a decade-old PC needs to run TrueNAS
Repurposed hardware is a valid TrueNAS platform, but age alone does not determine whether a machine is suitable. The official TrueNAS 25.04 Hardware Guide lists these minimums for that release:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A two-core Intel 64-bit or AMD x86_64 processor.
- 8 GB of memory.
- A 16 GB SSD boot device.
- Two identically sized storage devices for a single pool.
These are version-specific minimum requirements, not a promise of good performance for every ten-year-old computer. The actual CPU, memory, storage connections and intended workload still matter. Check the guide for the TrueNAS version you plan to install rather than applying the 25.04 figures to a different release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Beats a Synology” needs a defined test
A useful comparison identifies the exact old-PC configuration and Synology model, then tests them under the same conditions. For performance, that means naming the workload and reporting the method and results; a file-transfer result, for example, does not by itself establish how the systems perform on other tasks. No matched benchmark or measured result for the systems in this title is available here, so the claim remains the builder’s report rather than a general finding about old PCs and Synology appliances.
#1 Best Overall
- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds
- Creator-Grade Backup Solution - Protect your irreplaceable content with automated backups to cloud services, external drives and remote NAS
- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
Performance is only one possible measure. A meaningful comparison can include:
- Workload performance: the tasks that matter to you, tested under comparable conditions.
- Total cost: hardware purchases and operating costs, not just the price of the used PC.
- Power use: idle and active consumption measured on each system. No comparable readings are established here.
- Capacity and expansion: usable storage and the practical options for adding drives.
- Data protection: the actual pool, RAID or other protection configuration.
- Setup and upkeep: the work involved in installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance.
A 2026 secondary comparison also frames cost, power and software as relevant DIY-versus-appliance considerations, but it does not verify this particular build’s performance claim: HomeLabPicks’ DIY NAS vs Synology comparison.

Compare the software and storage configuration too
A DIY PC running TrueNAS and a Synology system should be compared as configured, not as bare hardware alone. TrueNAS’s hardware guide covers drive choices, including NAS drives and recording technology; the right selection depends on the system’s compatibility and workload. The guide does not establish one best drive model.

It also describes RAID technology for fault tolerance and improved performance. These are documented DSM capabilities, not evidence that a Synology system is faster or slower than the PC in the title. To compare fairly, disclose what software, storage layout and data-protection settings each system actually uses.

What readers need before drawing a verdict
The headline can be a genuine account of one builder’s experience, but readers need more detail to assess what it means for their own NAS decision:
- The PC’s processor, memory, boot device and storage configuration.
- The Synology model and its configuration.
- The software versions and the workload used for comparison.
- Test conditions and results, with measured outcomes separated from subjective preferences.
- Power readings and a total-cost calculation if the claim includes efficiency or value.
- The capacity, expansion path, data-protection approach and maintenance burden of each setup.
Without those details, the defensible takeaway is limited: a decade-old PC may be a workable TrueNAS host if it meets the relevant version’s requirements, but the title does not establish a universal performance advantage over Synology.
