A cloud virtual machine (VM) or VPS can run an encoder continuously and send a YouTube livestream while your home PC is off. The cloud machine must stay on, have access to the video or live input, and maintain a connection to YouTube. For a prerecorded loop, the video needs to be available to the cloud encoder; for a camera or microphone at home, that input needs its own route to the cloud.
What “running in the cloud” actually means
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder. In a cloud setup, the encoder runs on a remote VM instead of your computer. You use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to obtain the server URL and stream key, configure the encoder with them, and send the feed to YouTube. YouTube documents this encoder workflow but does not prescribe or certify a particular 24/7 cloud design. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection steps.

Turning off your PC only removes the local computer from the chain. It does not turn off a cloud VM that is still running. But the cloud host must be able to reach the media: a prerecorded video or playlist can be stored or mounted where the encoder can access it; a live camera or microphone must deliver its feed to the cloud. If the only camera or microphone is attached to your home PC, switching that PC off also removes the source.
Choose the right source setup
Prerecorded video or a playlist
Place the files somewhere the cloud encoder can access, configure an appropriate encoder or playback workflow to repeat or schedule them, then connect the encoder to YouTube with the stream URL and key. YouTube’s instructions cover the encoder connection, not a particular application for looping files, so verify that your chosen software can repeat your media unattended and recover after a restart.

Live camera, microphone, or another live feed
The source must reach the cloud host while your PC is off—for example, through a suitable network feed or remote capture workflow. The precise design depends on the source and network. A cloud VM can host the encoder, but it cannot capture a device that is only connected to a powered-off home computer.
Check YouTube eligibility and operating limits
- Channel eligibility: YouTube’s current live-streaming help page says a channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s eligibility guidance for the current requirements.
- Bandwidth: YouTube advises that available upload capacity exceed the stream’s total bitrate and recommends 20% headroom. Network interruptions can disrupt a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Archiving: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder setup guidance does not promise automatic archiving for an event longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, use shorter events and confirm the result in Studio. Encoder setup and archiving guidance.
- Rights and policies: Livestreams must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines, and you need the rights required for the material you stream. Review YouTube’s terms and the applicable content rules before scheduling a continuous broadcast.
How to set up a cloud VM or VPS
- Select a cloud host and region. Compare the region’s proximity to your media source and operators, compute capacity for the chosen encoder, sustained outbound bandwidth, storage, transfer limits or egress charges, and restart or reconnect behavior. Google Cloud lists Mumbai (
asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2) Compute Engine regions. Its VM pricing and region page does not by itself establish that a particular machine can handle your encoding workload. - Check the actual transfer and price terms. AWS describes Lightsail instances as VPSs and publishes bundles that include compute, memory, storage, and transfer. Its current pricing page says Mumbai bundles include half the transfer allowance shown for other listed regions; check the offer for your region before committing. AWS Lightsail pricing. Google Cloud says VM-to-YouTube transfer is not charged under the network pricing it lists; confirm applicable terms for your project and usage at Google Cloud network pricing. These provider terms are not a like-for-like comparison.
- Prepare the media and encoder. Put prerecorded material where the VM can access it, or establish a separate route for a live input. Install and configure an encoder suitable for the machine and workload. Ensure the process can repeat or schedule the source as needed and can be restarted if it stops.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube’s exact controls can change; follow the current encoder setup steps.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start the encoder, wait for the preview, check stream health and quality, and confirm the expected media is playing. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; see its live-streaming tips. Test recovery as well: a cloud location does not guarantee that the encoder, network route, or YouTube connection will never fail.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential that authorizes the encoder to send to your stream. Do not expose it in public logs or screenshots. If it is compromised, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
What to compare when choosing a cloud setup
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Region and route | A nearby region may help with access and latency, but a region listing alone does not prove sustained throughput to YouTube or to your media source. |
| Compute and encoding | The VM must sustain the selected encoder workload. Check the actual software and hardware-encoding requirements rather than assuming an inexpensive instance is sufficient. |
| Outbound capacity and transfer | Capacity must exceed the stream bitrate with room for variation; account for provider transfer allowances and excess egress charges. |
| Media storage | Confirm where the files live, how the encoder accesses them, and whether storage is included or billed separately. |
| Recovery and administration | Check how the encoder starts after a restart, reconnects if YouTube drops the stream, and alerts you when unattended operation needs attention. |
| Total cost | Include the running VM, storage, transfer, and any additional services required for your design. Provider plans and regional terms differ, so compare current prices for the workload rather than relying on a region name alone. |
Common problems and fixes
- No preview in YouTube Studio: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the VM has outbound connectivity. Check the encoder logs and the Live Control Room preview.
- Stream drops or becomes unstable: Check the VM’s network route and sustained upload capacity against the total bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Inspect both encoder and provider monitoring; a nearby data center is not proof of a stable route.
- Playback stops or repeats incorrectly: Confirm the media is accessible from the cloud host and that the encoder’s loop or schedule is configured as intended. Test the full sequence before relying on it unattended.
- Video or audio source disappears: Verify that the source itself is available to the VM. A camera or microphone connected only to the home PC will not remain available when that PC is off.
- Stream key stops working or may be exposed: Check the stream settings and reset the key if compromised, then replace the old value in the encoder.
- No archive appears for a very long event: The documented automatic archive threshold is for streams under 12 hours. For a dependable archive, use shorter events and verify the saved recording in Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube streams, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
