A cloud service can send uploaded or remotely available video to YouTube while your computer is off. But if the stream depends on a camera, game, scene, or file available only on that PC, switching it off stops the source unless you move or recreate it elsewhere.
What has to keep running
A YouTube live stream needs an encoder to send content to YouTube. In a typical PC setup, the computer supplies the video and runs the encoder. Turning it off works only if both jobs are handled elsewhere: a remote source must provide the video, and an encoder outside your home must send it to YouTube.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to enter the channel’s live server URL and stream key in an encoder, then start it. YouTube says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains this workflow.
Choose a method that matches your video source
Uploaded or prerecorded video
If you want a recording or playlist to play as a live stream, a cloud service designed for prerecorded video can run the feed without keeping your PC on. YouTube also names AJA PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media and streaming it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is a specific prerecorded-media workflow, not evidence that it can replace every live-source setup. Check the product’s current availability and supported modes before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder compatibility guidance describes the option.
Camera, gameplay, or a live PC scene
A cloud encoder cannot send a live source that exists only on the powered-off computer. To keep that kind of stream running, move the source and encoding workload to a remote setup that can access the camera, game, or other live input. Otherwise, leave the PC running. YouTube names AWS Elemental MediaLive as a cloud live video processing service, but its documentation does not establish a specific setup, price, runtime limit, or uptime commitment for your use case.

Set up a remote encoder for YouTube
- Confirm the remote source. Make sure the video or live input is available to the remote encoder. For prerecorded content, upload or otherwise supply the media using the chosen service’s supported workflow. For a live camera or game feed, verify that the remote setup can receive that input before shutting down the PC.
- Create or manage the live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream you intend to run. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering these credentials in the encoder.
- Enter the credentials in the remote encoder. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection where the encoder offers it. RTMPS encrypts the connection to Google’s servers; see YouTube’s streaming protocol guidance.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview looks and sounds right before starting the broadcast.
- Only then turn off your PC. Verify that the remote source and encoder continue sending content independently of the computer at home.
Treat the stream key like an account credential: anyone with access to it may be able to publish to your channel. Keep it private, and replace it in YouTube and the encoder if it is exposed.
Know what “continuous” does—and does not—mean
A cloud location removes the requirement for your home PC to stay on; it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted or indefinite broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not promise perpetual operation or establish the uptime, regional availability, runtime limits, or price of a particular cloud provider. Check those details with the service you choose.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive threshold, not a stated maximum stream duration. Do not treat it as proof that longer streams are impossible or that a particular encoder will run indefinitely. See YouTube’s encoder workflow guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm the remote encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the source is available to it.
- The feed stops when the PC shuts down: The source or encoder is still running locally. Move both required parts to a remote setup, or keep the PC on.
- The stream key is rejected: Check that it belongs to the intended live stream and channel, then copy it again from YouTube Studio. If it may have been exposed, replace it and update the encoder.
- The stream starts but the preview is wrong: Check the remote source and the encoder’s input selection before going live. A remote encoder cannot recreate a scene or input it cannot access.
- The broadcast ends or disconnects unexpectedly: Check the encoder’s status and the cloud provider’s documented runtime and recovery behavior. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish a specific provider’s uptime or recovery guarantee.
