A church can loop a recorded sermon on YouTube Live by adding the file as an OBS Media Source, enabling Loop, and streaming OBS to YouTube with an encoder stream key. The setup is technically possible, but it depends on the channel’s livestream eligibility and the church’s rights to every element in the recording—including music and third-party clips.
How to loop one sermon recording in OBS
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy its stream URL and key for OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Add the sermon to an OBS scene. Open or create the broadcast scene, then use the Sources dock to add a Media Source. Select the local sermon recording. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. A file still needs to play correctly on your system; preview it before going live.
- Enable the repeat setting. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS documents this as the setting that plays the file again after it finishes; its default is off. Restart playback when source becomes active is a different control: it restarts the file when the source is visible in the current scene, but does not make the file repeat by itself.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Configure OBS with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Check the OBS preview for picture and sound, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect its incoming preview before starting the broadcast.
- Start the stream and supervise it. Confirm that the sermon begins as expected and that playback returns to the beginning when the file ends. A looping source does not, by itself, guarantee that the internet connection, OBS, computer or YouTube stream will remain uninterrupted.
OBS’s Media Source controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide; YouTube’s encoder setup is covered in its encoder livestreaming instructions.

Playing several sermons in sequence
For a collection of recordings, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding each file as a separate single-file Media Source. Add the files to its playlist and enable Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence. OBS says VLC must be installed for this source type to appear. Check the playlist order, transitions between files, and audio levels in preview before broadcasting.

Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s encoder guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check access and any current restrictions in YouTube Studio before preparing a scheduled or continuous broadcast. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but its general help pages do not establish a church-specific exemption or expressly rule on every sermon-looping scenario.

Clear every element in the recording
The church is responsible for having the necessary rights to all live content and for complying with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable law. Review the sermon recording itself as well as worship music, photographs, video clips, slides, and any other third-party material. A church’s permission to show one part does not automatically clear the other elements.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyright matches. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the feed, produce a warning, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. Even when a church has a license, a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for the stream to proceed without a match-related interruption. Resolve that with the rights owner before going live; a license alone does not ensure that YouTube’s automated matching will recognize the permission.

Keep streaming permission separate from monetization
Being allowed to stream a sermon does not establish that a channel or broadcast qualifies for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams, and its reused-content review applies at channel level. Do not infer monetization eligibility from owning a recording or having permission to rebroadcast it.

OBS can keep repeating a file at the source level, but that is different from YouTube preserving the full broadcast as an archive or offering DVR throughout it. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR functionality may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If keeping a complete recording matters, make a local recording as a backup rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Troubleshooting a sermon loop
- The file plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled. Restart playback when source becomes active is not a substitute.
- The sermon does not appear in the scene: Check that the Media Source is visible and selected, that the file path points to the intended local recording, and that the OBS preview shows the scene you plan to stream.
- There is no sound or the wrong audio plays: Preview the source in OBS, check the source’s audio and the scene’s audio levels, and confirm that the recording itself has an audio track.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Check that OBS has the correct YouTube stream URL and key, that the channel can livestream, and that YouTube Live Control Room shows an incoming encoder preview. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The stream is interrupted after it starts: Look for a YouTube copyright warning or placeholder and review the recording for matched material. If the church has permission, ask the rights owner whether Content ID allowlisting is needed; permission does not necessarily prevent an automated match.
- The archive is incomplete or DVR is unavailable: Check whether the broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour threshold. For broadcasts where the archive matters, record locally as a backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded sermon or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
