Email, notes, and Drive documents can also work offline if you enable access or save the files while connected. Live websites, cloud-only files, and other services that need an internet connection will not be available until you reconnect.
Google Chromebook Help says, “You can use offline-ready apps to keep using a Chromebook when it’s not connected to the Internet.” The key is to check each app and make essential content available locally before you lose connectivity.

What can you do on a Chromebook without Wi-Fi?
Offline capability depends on the task, the app, and whether the needed content is already on the Chromebook. Google lists tasks such as editing photos stored locally and playing media among things you can do offline. You can also work with prepared email, notes, and supported Drive files.

- Use offline-ready apps: An app may support some functions offline, but that does not mean every feature—or every app—will work without a connection.
- Read or watch downloaded content: Some supported apps let you download content in advance. Availability varies by app and title.
- Continue prepared work: Gmail, Google Keep, and Google Drive can support offline use once you have set them up and saved the necessary content.
Anything that needs a live website, cloud retrieval, or an active online service will have to wait. Offline access is not a general-purpose replacement for an internet connection.

How to prepare your Chromebook for offline use
Do this while connected to the internet. After setup, test access to the specific messages, documents, and media you expect to need.
- Enable Gmail Offline: In Chrome, open Gmail settings, turn on Gmail Offline, choose how many days of messages to sync, and save the changes. Gmail Offline does not work in Incognito mode. Messages you compose offline stay in the Outbox and send when the Chromebook reconnects.
- Prepare Google Keep: Open Keep while online and allow your notes time to save. Google says saved notes can then be viewed and edited offline; changes appear online after the device reconnects.
- Make Drive files available offline: Turn on Drive’s Offline setting and mark important files or folders available offline. Google supports offline access for Docs, Sheets, and Slides files. Recently opened files may be made available automatically, but check that essential files are actually accessible before leaving connectivity. Offline edits sync when the Chromebook reconnects.
- Save web pages you need: Google suggests saving a page as an HTML file for offline reading. Save it before disconnecting; an unsaved live website will not load offline.
- Install apps and download content: While online, install the apps you need and confirm that each one supports the offline task you intend to use. Google’s guidance describes offline reading in Play Books and downloading shows or movies through the relevant app. Do not assume a streaming or music service supports downloads: Google specifically says YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback.
- Download ChromeOS updates: Connect to Wi-Fi and check for system updates before a trip or other offline period. Google says ChromeOS updates download when the Chromebook is connected to the internet.
- Check storage and test: Confirm there is room for the files and downloads you need. Then disconnect from Wi-Fi briefly and open the items you plan to use.
What will not work, or may be limited, offline?
Live websites and connected services
A Chromebook without internet cannot retrieve a live website or use an online service that requires a connection. Offline-ready apps only help with the functions and content they have made available locally.

Some Google services and files
Google’s Drive offline guidance identifies Google Maps and Google Forms as unsupported in this mode. Microsoft 365 files also have an important limitation: Google says they cannot be opened in Microsoft 365 or Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides while offline. A basic offline editor may be offered, but its functionality is limited; do not count on full Microsoft Office editing without a connection.
Incognito, guest mode, and restricted devices
Gmail Offline does not work in Incognito mode, and some offline apps or services may fail in Incognito or guest mode. Android app support varies by Chromebook model, and some apps are unavailable on some devices. A school or workplace administrator may also restrict Play Store access, app installation, or other services.

System updates
ChromeOS update downloads require an internet connection. If an update is needed while you are offline, you will have to wait until the Chromebook can connect.
How to manage files and storage while offline
Offline access uses local storage: documents, email sync, app data, and downloaded media need space on the device. Google warns that Chromebook storage is limited. Low space can interfere with downloading files, loading web pages, changing settings, and using Android apps.

The Downloads folder is local but temporary, so do not treat it as the only safe place for important files. For extra room or a way to carry files, Google lists compatible USB thumb drives and external hard drives as options. An external drive is optional, not a requirement for offline use; check your Chromebook’s port and storage compatibility before choosing one.
Is a Chromebook suitable for your offline task?
Judge it by the exact work you need to do, rather than by whether the device can be called “offline.” Before relying on it, check these points:
