It may display a 120Hz signal, but that does not prove GTA VI will render at 120 frames per second. Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date, but its official game page does not promise 120fps, a 120Hz performance mode, a specific resolution, or even a performance-mode option as of October 18, 2026. A low-cost Samsung gaming monitor can therefore be a sensible 120Hz display for a console, yet you should buy it for its documented HDMI, resolution, VRR and HDR capabilities—not on the assumption that GTA VI will use all 120 refreshes.
The short answer: 120Hz is possible, 120fps is unconfirmed
A monitor’s refresh rate is the number of times its panel can refresh each second. A game’s frame rate is the number of completed images the console and game engine produce. A 144Hz Samsung monitor can accept a 120Hz console signal, but it cannot make a game that renders at 60fps produce 120fps. The monitor will show each available frame for one or more refresh intervals, depending on the console’s output and any variable-refresh-rate behavior.

For GTA VI, the decisive specification is still unknown. Rockstar’s official listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and identifies PlayStation 5 as “Plays Best On.” The same page gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. It does not state a frame-rate target, a 120Hz mode, a resolution, or a performance-mode setting. Until Rockstar publishes those details or the released game is tested, 120Hz should be treated as display headroom and future-proofing, not as a GTA VI performance guarantee.
What Rockstar has (and has not) confirmed
- Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Release date: November 19, 2026.
- Preferred platform wording: Rockstar labels PlayStation 5 as “Plays Best On.”
- Unpublished details: no official GTA VI-specific promise for 120fps, 120Hz output, resolution, VRR behavior or a performance mode had appeared on the official page checked October 18, 2026.
That absence does not mean GTA VI cannot run above 60fps. It means there is no authoritative number on which to base a monitor purchase. A 120Hz-capable display may become useful if Rockstar adds a high-frame-rate mode, but buying one solely for that possibility involves uncertainty.

How 120Hz works on PlayStation 5
PlayStation 5 hardware supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K output at 120Hz when the console, display, cable and game support the combination. Sony’s current support guidance includes a 120 Hz Output setting. When enabled, the PS5 can send 120Hz to a compatible TV or monitor and to games that support a 120Hz frame rate; it does not force every game to render at 120fps.
Sony recommends the cable supplied with the PS5 or another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K/120Hz connection. The console should connect directly to the display’s appropriate HDMI 2.1 input rather than through an older switch, receiver or adapter. If 4K/120Hz is not detected, Sony also advises checking the display’s firmware and its input settings.
At lower resolutions, the bandwidth requirement can be less demanding. A monitor may support 1080p at 120Hz or 1440p at 120Hz through an HDMI 2.0 input even though that same input cannot carry 4K at 120Hz. The monitor’s manual, not the word “gaming” on its packaging, determines which combinations are supported.

Only if your target signal requires it. HDMI 2.1 is the straightforward requirement for an uncompromised 4K/120Hz PS5 chain, but it is not automatically required for 1080p/120Hz or 1440p/120Hz. Some HDMI 2.0 monitors can accept those lower-resolution 120Hz signals and can support PS5 VRR, according to independent console testing. Xbox consoles also support FreeSync on compatible displays.

| Target signal | What it asks of the monitor | HDMI guidance | What it says about GTA VI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 120Hz | 1080p panel or a monitor that accepts and scales 1080p; documented 120Hz console input | HDMI 2.0 may be sufficient, depending on the model | Useful only if the game and console output a 120Hz mode |
| 1440p at 120Hz | 1440p support at 120Hz over the monitor’s HDMI input | Often possible over HDMI 2.0, but verify the exact signal table | No Rockstar confirmation of this mode |
| 4K at 120Hz | 4K panel, 120Hz support at 4K, suitable HDMI bandwidth and compatible firmware | HDMI 2.1 is normally required for the full PS5 signal | No Rockstar confirmation of 4K/120Hz rendering |
| 4K at 60Hz | 4K support at 60Hz | HDMI 2.0 is commonly adequate when the monitor documents it | A 60Hz output would still be shown correctly on a 120Hz monitor |
Do not infer console compatibility from a DisplayPort specification. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S use HDMI; a monitor can advertise 144Hz or 165Hz over DisplayPort while accepting only 60Hz or 120Hz through HDMI.
How to check a cheap Samsung monitor before buying
“Cheap Samsung gaming monitor” is not one specification. Models differ in panel resolution, HDMI generation, firmware, VRR range, HDR support and whether high refresh rates work at full resolution. Identify the exact model number and check its manual or Samsung specification page for the following items.
1. Confirm the HDMI signal table
Look for an explicit entry such as 1920×1080 at 120Hz, 2560×1440 at 120Hz or 3840×2160 at 120Hz over HDMI. A headline refresh rate measured through DisplayPort does not establish the HDMI result. If the documentation lists 144Hz only for DisplayPort, assume the console may be limited to a lower rate until Samsung states otherwise.

2. Match the monitor’s native resolution to your priority
A 1080p monitor can be an inexpensive route to 120Hz, but it gives up the detail of 1440p or 4K. A 1440p monitor may offer a useful balance if it documents 120Hz over HDMI. A 4K monitor needs the appropriate HDMI bandwidth for 4K/120Hz; otherwise the console may have to use 4K/60Hz or a lower resolution.

3. Check VRR, not just refresh rate
Variable refresh rate allows the display to adjust its refresh timing to the console’s changing frame rate, reducing tearing and uneven delivery. Check whether the exact Samsung model supports VRR over HDMI, the supported range, and whether that feature works with PS5, Xbox, or both. VRR cannot raise a game’s frame rate; it makes an uneven frame rate look smoother within the display’s supported range.
4. Treat HDR as a separate feature
HDR affects brightness range, contrast and color handling; it is not evidence of 120Hz support. Verify that HDR is available over the HDMI input and read the monitor’s actual HDR limitations. A budget monitor may accept an HDR signal without delivering the brightness or local contrast associated with a high-end HDR display.
5. Use Samsung’s designated gaming input
Samsung’s Game Mode guidance tells owners seeking 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz to use the designated HDMI port marked for gaming on compatible displays. Port labels differ by model. If there is an input signal enhancement, game mode or console-specific setting, enable it as described in that model’s manual; do not assume every HDMI port has identical bandwidth.
Is a 144Hz Samsung monitor enough for PS5?
It can be, provided its HDMI input supports the console signal you want. A 144Hz panel has more than enough refresh capacity for a 120Hz output, but the number printed on the box does not answer three practical questions: which resolution is supported at 120Hz, whether the feature works over HDMI, and whether VRR is available.

For example, a 144Hz monitor that accepts 1440p/120Hz over HDMI can be a good fit for a PS5 if GTA VI or another game offers a 1440p/120Hz mode. A different 144Hz model that reaches 144Hz only through DisplayPort may run the same console at 60Hz. Neither result contradicts the advertised 144Hz figure; they describe different inputs and use cases.
What monitor specifications matter most for GTA VI?
- HDMI capability at your chosen resolution: this is the gatekeeper for console refresh rate.
- Native resolution: choose 1080p, 1440p or 4K based on your preferred sharpness and the bandwidth your console chain can provide.
- 120Hz or higher HDMI refresh support: useful for games that expose a high-frame-rate mode and for other console titles.
- VRR over HDMI: helps with fluctuating frame delivery and can reduce tearing.
- HDR support and implementation: relevant to image range, but independent of frame rate.
- Firmware and compatibility documentation: important when a monitor initially fails to negotiate 4K/120Hz or VRR.
Do not pay a premium solely because a listing says “120Hz ready for GTA VI.” No GTA VI-specific 120fps statistic had been published by Rockstar on the date above. Pay for a combination of resolution, HDMI support, VRR and HDR that remains useful for your other games and devices.
PS5 setup for a 120Hz-capable monitor
- Connect the PS5 directly to the Samsung monitor’s HDMI input documented for the highest refresh rate. For a 4K/120Hz target, use the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or to the monitor’s supported resolution. Avoid selecting 4K if the monitor is a 1080p or 1440p model and the display does not document that conversion.
- Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic. This allows compatible games to request 120Hz without forcing unsupported titles to run at that rate.
- Set VRR to Automatic if the monitor documents PS5 VRR support. Use the option to apply VRR to unsupported games only when you understand that compatibility can vary.
- Review the PS5 video-output information screen. It should show the resolution, HDR and refresh capabilities that the console actually detected, rather than the monitor’s marketing maximum.
Xbox Series X|S setup
- Connect the Xbox directly to the Samsung monitor’s documented high-bandwidth HDMI input.
- Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
- Choose the desired resolution, then set Refresh rate to 120Hz if that combination appears as available.
- Open 4K TV details to see which 4K, HDR and refresh-rate combinations the console has verified.
- Under the display options, enable variable refresh rate when the monitor supports it. Xbox’s FreeSync support depends on the display and connection.
If 120Hz disappears when you select 4K, the limitation may be the monitor’s HDMI bandwidth, the cable, an intermediary device or the display’s firmware—not the panel’s advertised maximum refresh rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting when the console stays at 60Hz
The console does not offer 120Hz at any resolution
- Check that the cable is connected to the Samsung input specified for gaming or high refresh.
- Remove HDMI switches, capture devices, soundbars and receivers temporarily; connect the console directly.
- Read the model’s HDMI signal table. The monitor may support 120Hz only through DisplayPort or only at 1080p.
- Install available monitor firmware and recheck the console’s video-output screen.
120Hz works at 1080p but not at 4K
This usually indicates a bandwidth or documented-signal limit. Keep 1080p/120Hz, choose 1440p/120Hz if the model supports it, or use 4K/60Hz. A 4K panel does not automatically support 4K at 120Hz.

VRR is missing or causes instability
Confirm that VRR is supported over HDMI for your particular console. Try the monitor’s standard gaming mode, update its firmware and test with the console connected directly. If the picture flickers or drops out, disable VRR temporarily and use a fixed refresh rate while you isolate the compatibility problem.
The PS5 reports 120Hz, but GTA VI looks capped at 60fps
A 120Hz signal only proves that the console and monitor negotiated that output. The game may render at 60fps or lower, or it may reserve a higher frame rate for a mode that has not been announced. Check GTA VI’s own display or graphics options after release; do not infer its frame rate from the monitor’s information banner.
Should you buy now or wait for GTA VI specifications?
Buy now if you also want a monitor for games that already use 120Hz, and select a model whose HDMI signal table, VRR support and resolution meet your current needs. Waiting is safer if GTA VI is the main reason for the purchase and you care specifically about 4K/120Hz, because Rockstar has not confirmed that mode. A lower-cost 1080p or 1440p monitor can still be a rational choice, but only when its documented HDMI behavior matches the signal you intend to use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical decision is therefore simple: choose the console resolution first, verify that the exact Samsung model accepts that resolution at 120Hz over HDMI, then check VRR and HDR. Treat GTA VI’s frame rate as an unanswered game-specification question until Rockstar publishes it or the released version is measured.
